Had a quick search, couldn't find a thread on this, but I believe it is a topic worth tackling.
What are the all time great performances as a 'bad guy' (or girl)?
My 5:
1. Alan Rickman as 'Hans Gruber' in Die Hard.
Splendid stuff, has the voice, the look and ability to make it memorable. Haven't been overly impressed by most of his other roles, but seems to be brilliantly suited to a European terrorist organisation leader.
2. Joaquin Phoenix as 'Commodus' in Gladiator.
Not a massive fan of the film, but his performance is outstanding. He's such a classy actor that unfortunately seems to be off the rails at the moment, although his rapping is kinda funny... (youtube if you haven't seen it).
3. Michael Madsen as 'Mr Blonde' in Reservoir Dogs.
Not a typical 'bad guy' as such, as the audience is somewhat sympathetic to his character. But, Mr Blonde is pure evil, and as cool as they come.
4. Heath Ledger as 'The Joker' in The Dark Knight.
I almost feel embarrassed putting Heath in, but his performance is one that I was not able to take my eyes off. I've never really wanted a character to come back on screen as much as I did with The Joker. Not because the rest of the film lacked, but because he was so interesting and unpredictable, along with being freaky.
5. Ralph Fiennes as 'Francis Dolarhyde' in Red Dragon.
Controversial having Heath Ledger as The Joker ahead of Jack Nicholson and Ralph Fiennes ahead of Anthony Hopkins, but I found his character seriously messed up, and seriously chilling. Obviously the same could be said for Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, but he was edged out but Fiennes' performance for mine.
