Just wanted to see what other people think of the queenslanders. Everyone talks about all other states and no one seems to say anything about the emerging talent coming from Queensland. Their are alot of players that are under rated from up there. This is my oppinion-

1) Joel Smouha - Mt Gravatt
2) Dayne Zorko - Broadbeach
3) David Hille - Zillmere
4) James Mulligan - Southport
5) Rhys Magin - Zillmere
6) Sam Reid - Zillmere
7) Joey Daye - Zillmere
8) Daniel Brittain - Southport
9) Darrin Stewart- Broadbeach
10) Ben Gibson - Morningside
11) Daniel Stewart - Labrador
12) Brendan Whitecross - Zillmere
13) Mark Davis - Mt Gravatt
14) Mitch Enright - Mt Gravatt

Thats just my thoughts. Dont think they will al go but just wanted to know what other people thought.
Thanks guys:)

Brittan isn't top 14, nor would Enright. I'd add Jake Spencer in the top 10.

I reckon Reid, will be the best Queenslander to come out of thsi draft. He has plenty of upside, though he didnt show much at the Champs due to injuries he has remarkable clearance skills by hand. Terrific work rate.\

Whitecross, is also come onto the radar with very impressive performances at DC. Great runner, reasonable skills, athletic, tough.

Zorko, though very short is a tough nut. Wins the ball, kicks goals, has solid skills and tackles.

Two of those 3 mentioned above will be Lions in 2008. :)

My Top 5-
Reid
Whitecross
Smouha
Daye
Zorko

How does this year's Queensland talent compare to last year's? IIRC, there were a record number of Queenslanders taken in last year's draft.

Saints have used their first pick the last two years on Queenslanders. Is Smouha worth pick 9 or is that too early for him?

Way to early.

Because? I know he's skinny, but what are the knocks on his footy?

There are doubts as to whether he will be tall enough to ruck at AFL level, and whether he will be up to filling a KP post.

While he has shown terrific athletic traits, he's still very raw. His skills are ok, but the doubts over his ability to ruck at AFL level will probably deter clubs from taking him early. However, wouldn't surprise me if he went from late 2nd round onwards.

What are your thoughts on Reid?
Where and When do you think he will go?

A little dissapointing this year IMO (prior to injury), however still ticks most of the right boxes. Pretty poor showing at the champs, but I think recruiters will look beyond that to a certain extent. An excellent user of the ball, which will definitely appeal. Has a touch of class that makes him stand out.

Still a few question marks, but I'd expect him to be gone by 40.

I have him in the 25-40 bracket.

I can't see Queenslanders featuring so prominently in this year's draft.

As it stands now, I'd rate them like this:

1. Sam Reid: I've got him down to go in the 20-30 bracket. The class factor will make up for his performances at the Champs.
2. James Mulligan: He could go just about anywhere, but, given the nature of this draft, I can see a club taking a chance on him early in the 3rd round. He could be great, he could be a let down.
3. Brendan Whitecross: Another player where it's hard to judge. He should go around 30-50 as he certainly has some style about him. Could well go ahead of Mulligan.
4. Joel Smouha: His Draft Camp will boost his value and should shoot him up to the late 3rd round. He would be a project player, but he could be a very good player.
5. Joseph Daye: Got speed and some height on his side. His skills lack though and that will drop his value dramatically. I expect him to go somehwere in the 4th round.
6. Dayne Zorko: His lack of height will probably lead to him being looked over on Draft day. However, he should get rookie listed and he could pay off.
7. Rhys Magin: I thought he was a chance to go late last year, seems to have drifted out people's minds this year. He might find himself on a rookie list.

The others I don't know enough about to judge.

Zorko, Magin and possible Clarke (21 year-old winger) are the PSD/Rookie candidates for the Lions.

Aren't those the same questions on Ben McEvoy though? And people here consistently put McEvoy in the top ten. Smouha's only a couple of CMs shy of McEvoy and from what I gather is the more mobile of the two.

I'm not saying I want Smouha at 9, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if some teams like his athleticism enough to put him ahead of McEvoy. I would be stunned if he was still available by the time the Saints second pick comes around. It all depends though on how much teams think his footy skills will improve.

McEvoy is 199cm and will probably end up at around 200ish. If Smouha grows the same amount, he's only going to be 197cm and that isn't really a popular height for recruiters (for ruckman).

McEvoy to me has more footy smarts. He's a genuine footballer, and it shows. Can easily fill a KP role.

Whitecross should be in the first couple of Qld's. Bottom-age, quality DC, good room for improvement etc.

I don't think his height would worry recruiters as much as his weight if he's going to ruck. Either way, you're probably right. He's probably somewhere in the second to third round range.

Not in my opinion. At DC he ran a good beep test and the very next day pulled out before 3km because he said he had been sick that night. To me thats just a poor excuse and there has been other times when he has pulled out of running exercises etc. Would not be surprised if he is picked up next year and not this year.
