Fernando Torres asks to leave Liverpool

Liverpool have rejected a written transfer request from Spain international striker Fernando Torres.

The Anfield club have already turned down a bid from Chelsea - thought to be about £35m-40m - for the 26-year-old.

"He's under a long-term contract. We expect him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool and its fans when he signed the agreement," said the Reds.

Earlier, Liverpool announced they had agreed a deal to sign Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez from Ajax for £23m.

But Suarez's transfer did not stop Torres from asking to leave Liverpool just hours after the Ajax and the Reds confirmed a deal had been agreed for the Uruguayan.

"Fernando Torres has submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool," added the Reds statement.
Torres has had a indifferent season, scoring nine goals in 26 games but has recently looked revitalised under new boss Kenny Dalglish, scoring three goals in his last four games.

The Spaniard's inconsistent start to the campaign comes after a knee injury, which also hampered him at the World Cup in South Africa last summer.

Although he scored twice in the Reds' 2-0 win over Chelsea in November, Torres looked a forlorn figure under previous Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson

Liverpool moved up to seventh in the Premier League table following their 1-0 victory over Fulham on Wednesday, but they still face a fight to qualify for the Champions League next season, with Chelsea nine points ahead of them in fourth spot.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti refused to talk about Torres but said he is happy that "the club are trying to do everything they can to improve the squad".

With the transfer window open until 2300 GMT on Monday, there is still time for the Blues to increase their offer for the Spaniard should they wish.

Ancelotti said: "I don't want to speak about this, you will have to ask the club. He is not my player and I have to have respect for Liverpool.
"I'm not surprised, because I know very well what the club is doing now. I am happy because the club is doing a fantastic job in this transfer market."

Although Ancelotti's team have failed to fully replicate their form of last term where they won the Premier League title, they are still in the Champions League and are 10 points behind league leaders Manchester United.

Ancelotti has previously hinted that he wanted to bring in new players to bolster an ageing squad stretched by injuries this season.
And with the club close to signing Benfica defender David Luiz, the bid for Torres shows that Chelsea are still prepared to use their financial muscle to boost their domestic and European ambitions.

FERNANDO TORRES BID
Fernando Torres has told Liverpool that he wants to leave the club and the striker feels he has been "verbally intimidated".

Chelsea are to make a £40m bid for Torres, having had an initial bid of about £35m rejected, and will throw in young striker Daniel Sturridge as an extra.

Alternatively, the Blues are preparing to make a British record £60m offer for the Spain international.

Times football editor Tony Evans says he believes Torres will join Chelsea before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Chelsea's proposed new deal for Torres will make him the club's highest-earning player.

If that quote is true, then you have to say he is gone ths window. However, with the Rooney and Tevez affairs still fresh in our minds, it still could all be another smokescreen, but one would have to think this is the real deal.

This thread has some potential - will be watching !

Saw this on another board. Thought it was clever

To the Cheers theme song

Making your way in Liverpool takes everything you got
Not stealing my hubcaps sure would help alot
Wouldnt you like to win a game?
All those nights with no silver, the team riding your tail
And your little World Cup, really reeked of fail
And decent finances didnt show

Sometimes you wanna go where your owner knows your name
And hes glad your not from Ukraine
You wanna be where you can see, 3 extra zeros near your name
You wanna be, with a team that can win a game

Reds to stand firm over Torres rejection

Liverpool will not be bullied into selling Fernando Torres to Chelsea, with Kenny Dalglish determined to hold onto the striker despite reports that he is ready to ask for a move.

The Reds revealed late on Thursday night that they had rejected a bid for star striker Torres, with a club spokesman saying: "Chelsea have made a bid for Fernando which has been turned down. The player is not for sale."

ESPNsoccernet can reveal that Chelsea's offer for Torres was £28 million, significantly lower than the £35-40 million suggested in the press on Friday and a second bid of just over £30 million was also rejected soon after.

But even if the Blues were to return with a dramatically increased third bid, Liverpool would still refuse to entertain the idea of selling their prized asset, who has scored 74 goals in three-and-a-half years since arriving at Anfield as the Merseysiders' record signing in 2007.

A source close to the transfer told ESPNsoccernet: "There was a bid tabled at £28 million, but Liverpool made it clear that they won't sell. Kenny Dalglish is there for [at least] six months and he does not want one of his best players sold under any circumstances."

However, Liverpool's hand may yet be forced as reports emerged on Friday that Torres is ready to shock the club by asking to move to the reigning Premier League champions.

"If the player wants to go, that is another matter and if there is a chance [of him forcing a move] maybe Chelsea will increase their offer," the source added.

Chelsea's pursuit of Torres has been a game of cat and mouse, bubbling under the surface for 18 months, with representatives working behind the scenes to try to make the transfer a reality.

The Blues are ready to offer Torres a lucrative wage packet at Stamford Bridge should Liverpool accept a return offer - with a basic £160,000-a-week salary, plus bonuses and a massive signing on fee likely. Torres has been aware of Chelsea's interest for some time and had privately suggested they would be his preferred destination should he leave Anfield.

Manchester City were thought to be willing to pay a staggering £75 million for the former Atletico Madrid frontman last summer and he could have commanded £200,000-a-week at Eastlands, but a move to City has never been on Torres' agenda. Chelsea are travelling up to Merseyside on Friday ahead of their FA Cup clash with Everton, and members of the club's hierarchy have joined the team on the journey north as they consider putting together a new bid for Torres before the transfer window closes at 2300 GMT on Monday.

There are contradicting reports about the existence of a £50 million buy-out clause in Torres' contract and, at any rate, it is debatable whether Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich would be willing to pay that kind of fee.

Torres has endured a difficult season, in which he has struggled for form and fitness, but he has seemingly been given a new lease of life since Kenny Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson in the Liverpool hotseat and has still managed nine Premier League goals this term.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti refused to be drawn on his club's bid for Torres - but said he is happy that "the club are trying to do everything they can to improve the squad''.

Ancelotti added: "I don't want to speak about this, you will have to ask the club. He is not my player and I have to have respect for Liverpool. I don't like to speak about this.''

If he leaves in January, Liverpool are ****ed big time.

Would stuff their current formation up. Suarez is unproven and can't play upfront alone anyway.

Surprised Barcelona aren't bidding though. You'd think Chelsea would stick to playing Drogba as the striker rather than Torres if they bought him.

Whens the last time you watched Chelsea play .

Torres would replace Anelka. Even my dog figured that one out

For his recent form/injury issues that's a pretty big offer (if true). Obviously Chelsea are desperate.

We won't sell him this January unless we get a offer we can't refuse, if he does go, it'll be at seasons end and no doubt we'll push for 50 million from Chelsea, and with the 50 mil we can obviously re-build as said on the Liverpool board.

Just can't believe he would pull this on us with 3 days to go, and we have Chelsea next week, complete lack of respect to the King.

Could just be another Rooney saga, but who knows.

Their first offer was £28m, their second shortly after was £30m.

They'd have to go close to doubling that if they really want him!

Hell no.

Not that I brought myself to watch that vid... :(

I notice there was no 10-11 highlights on that vid.

He's not worth 35-40 mil at the moment. That offer was apparently false anyways.

He still has 9 league goals from this season.

He's proven quality, though. At his best, he's a very good striker and so Liverpool would want to get an offer close to the 40-45 million mark. Not to mention he's on a long term contract and Chelsea have the money.

Yeah, he's been awesome.

9 goals in a below par season is a pretty good effort.

He's still shown glimpses of his old self ie against Chelsea.

But yeah, he's no Rooneh, that's for sure.
