GAME DESCRIPTION:

Total Aussie Rules 2003 is a game that requires intelligence, planning, and football knowledge to master rather than your button smashing ability like most other sporting titles on the market. Because it can played through continuous seasons (30 in all), it gives you as coach time to build and develop your team into a competitive force by drafting, trading and re-signing the players you feel you require to be a successful team. During the on-field action, you'll need to employ strategic coaching tactics if you want to mix it with the intelligent computer coached teams.

Each season is split into two parts. The first is the Pre Season period, here you negotiate player contracts, trade players with other teams, participate in drafts, and basically handle all your teams off field needs. As with the real thing, ageing players will retire and a new bunch of rookies will be available to draft. Developing and fine-tuning your team can be quite a challenge, it is no easy task trying to sign the best possible players for your team while trying to keep your player payments under the salary cap.

The second part to the season is obviously the Home and Away season. Here you play all 22 rounds of football plus the finals series. Every single match of the season can be simulated by the computer in an instance, or can be viewed possession by possession at whatever speed you choose. Of course if your team is involved in the match, you have the option to make all the coaching calls. Tactics such as flooding, placing loose men in defence, tagging opposition superstars, long or short possession styles of play are just some of the strategies that can be employed to gain an advantage over the opposition. Coaching against the opposition coaches can be tough, you won't find you'll get too many mis-matches here.
There is also a complete awards ceremony during the season. Awards such as Rising Star award, All Australian team, Goalkicking medal, and of course the Total Aussie Rules best and fairest award.
At any stage throughout the game a host of information can be reached at the click of a button. Match statistics are recorded for every match of the season and can be revisited at any time. These show all individual and team stats for a match, as well as best players and goalkickers. Team sheets can be viewed for every team and all information can be seen for every player, this includes a players contract as well as his rating in all 15 attributes that contribute to his on-field performance.

At the conclusion or each season your coaching performance is reviewed. From here you can be hired or fired. If your team has been performing poorly for several seasons there is every chance your club will decide to sack you. You may also receive coaching offers from other clubs, particularly if your team has been performing well. In Total Aussie Rules 2003 you are not limited to coaching the same team for your entire coaching career

I think if you combined this game with the statistical and a few other features of Footy Fanatic, you'd have an absolutely fantastic game.

It also seems to me that on TAR2003, players don't get dropped through form, only injury.

agreed BLACK THUNDER!
it looks very footy fanatic-like.....but thats a good thing.
better graphics though. a million more options. it opens up a big can of worms.
my only problem is the price, some ppl wouldnt want 2 pay $39 for that game when afl live 2004 will b around $60 - $80.
oh well. if anybody wants to donate a game to me feel free. ;)

due to afl licensing, they couldn't use club nicknames.. decided to go with footscray rather than just western... it's all explained on their site

Sounds good, I'm a huge CM nut so it should be good.

I'm downloading the demo now, the screenshots look good & if the demo fires I reckon I'll go for it.

How long does the demo last for? Do you get a whole season, half season or what?

How does it compare to Footy Fanatic?

probably about equal overall, but you have to pay for it to get the full version.

Both are good in different areas.

Footy Fanatic is better in statistical output, realisticness of the output, and general tracking of players and their past. Its free.

TAR is better in the off-season is better (although not the draft IMO), and the actual games looks better, whilst there is room to have loose defenders in the game.

If you combined the two, you'd have a superb Australian Rules Football game.

you get trading

and you get some pretty dodgy retirements too
i had wellman, mercuri and barnard all retiring after 1 season
i think only mercuri had reached 30, and he'd had a really good year
pretty stupid imo

just looking at CM, i created a list of attributes that could be used in this game as well
obviously not all of them would be visible

physical
acceleration
agility
balance
injury proneness
jumping
natural fitness
pace
stamina
strength
versatility
left foot
right foot

mental
aggression
anticipation
bravery
consistency
creativity
decision
determination
dirtiness
flair
important matches
influence
teamwork
work rate

adaptability
ambition
controversy
loyalty
pressure
professionalism
sportsmanship
temperament

as for technical what do other people think

i downloaded the demo version and it didnt take me long to realise footy fanatic is a way better game

wif the text commentary, mroe stats and more features i'd say its way better

TAR just has a lil ball that moves around a bit

and FF is free :D

put it this way

if i went to a store and saw TAR at a retail store for 40 bux after playing the demo i wouldnt buy it

especially when i have FF which is a way better game and its free...again :D

Both games have their advantages, FF is superior for stats, but I recon TAR is much better in:
*Reliability, whic is a huge problem with FF
*Off-season, it's just so much better in TAR (trade, draft, be offered other jobs etc)
*Speed, once again it is far superior to FF in terms of how fast the games run.
*Strategy, has the ability to do things like drop the loose man back into defence, move player positions around etc. But I still think this could be improved upon.

I preferred TAR.

Footy Fanatic had so many bugs it was scary. It was a good game when working, but the trading was ridiculous.

I traded Marshall, Robbins and a 5th round pick to the Lions for Michael Voss.

TAR has better stats and is more realistic.

Both decent games though.

i luv the text commentary in FF and TAR only has a jerky moving ball so u really have to use ya imagination which i dont think is a good thing for games especially ones that cost 40 bux

i prefer TAR, for several reasons but one obvious one is the speed at which it allows you to complete a season. Far more convenient but since it is only the demo FF is better. If anyone has the full version please upload it or share it somehow (i have to try :p) can't see myself paying for it!

one feature that i like in TAR that FF doesnt feature is the loose man in defense

well stop complaining coz i have a solution

u know how u can set wat area of the ground the forwards, rucks and midfield go in

just put about 80+ for defense then u will find they will help out round dere

FF is pretty unreliable, Its a good thing it auto saves when the game crashes because i have had it crash over 20 times already and i havent even had the game a week....

oh and also during game play I had 10 guys retire at the end of my first season so i got the full use of the draft and the trading section, it will keep me busy until AFL Live 2004 hits the shelfs thats for sure :D .

Cannot seem to fine TAR anywere, were did you guys in Melbourne get the game???? and i have a pentium3 800mhz is that enough to run the game well????
