Can still request a trade

Once you nominate a club publicly as a player you're locked in to that club.

Probably doing himself a disservice in the off chance another club (eg Collingwood) want to come in late with an increased offer, because if he's nominated he shuts them out. Also at this early stage, maybe puts too much pressure on the clubs involved.

Trade week is still ages away, and no one has nominated publicly yet, despite reports Tomlinson & Langdon have chose Melbourne, Hill has chosen Saints & Martin Carlton.

Some news:

1. Bruce is a certainty. Lock him in.

2. Keath is 50/50 at best. Don’t lock him in to your best 22s for next year yet.

3. Here’s the random one. The clubs exploring the possibility of acquiring Michael Hurley. Contracted forever, and I’m not across the possible motivations of Essendon to consider moving him just yet, but we’re looking at using our ridiculous cap space to try and land him.

Keath would be a massie get for the dogs imo...if it's down to money i reckon you should be able to beat the other suitors like St Kilda if it's true they are throwing $900k at Hill.

And from Keath's perspective, Dogs much more likely to have immediate success than Saints.

I think there's a bit of confusion. We pulled out of the race for Martin because he told us he won't be traded to the dogs.

Here's the article

Carlton is in the box seat to land Gold Coast midfielder Jack Martin as the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle officially bowed out of the race.

The Blues are likely to land Martin but while they are zeroing in on him he has not yet officially nominated them as his club of choice.

He has told the Bulldogs and Fremantle in recent days despite their strong interest that he will not be traded to them.

It means unless a club like Essendon strengthens its interest or another shock contender emerges, he will likely find himself at Carlton next year.

MORE TRADE NEWS:

Martin played with Carlton captain and former WA junior Patrick Cripps as a junior and feels he could easily feel at home at the Blues.

They would have to broker a deal with Gold Coast, and also have interest in a host of players including Tom Papley, Eddie Betts, Darcy Cameron and Sam Jacobs.

It is another sign of Cripps’ powerful stature as Carlton’s co-captain when players like Martin are keen to be in his orbit.

While Martin has been a frustrating player who has not yet maximised his potential despite two top-three best-and-fairest finishes, no one doubts his talent.

The Dogs put in an impressive presentation and had offered him a significant salary to join him.

But he has always been keen to find the right landing spot that ticks several boxes, believing the decision will not be a purely financial one.

The decision is expected to fuel the Dogs’ interest in other targets including Josh Bruce and Alex Keath.

Last year they lost out to Hawthorn on star mid-forward Chad Wingard and had believed Martin was an ideal fit.

Gold Coast has confirmed he has requested a trade and would not have paid him anywhere near the massive offers that could hit $700,000.

Aware of the scope of those deals, it will still ask for a first-round pick back given how strongly he has been chased by rival clubs.

Martin is also keen to partner up with indigenous players Liam Jones and Sam Petrevski-Seton at Carlton, with Betts potential addition another bonus.

He has been pondering his decision in Broome on holidays, on the coast in the same area of the state from Petrevski-Seton’s Halls Creek, which is 700km inland.

Issac Smith makes great sense. We only need him for 2 years and he comes out of contract exactly when Bont does.

Had we given up 600k/4y to Martin instead then we wouldn’t have that extra money to bump up an offer to Bont.

Throw an extra 50k each to get Bruce and Keath over the line. Pay smith 450k (which is about 100-150k less than Martin) and then we have future room.

Wonder how much role played into Martins decision. Possibly been offered more midfield time as Carlton do lack class there, while we would have been offering 75% forward time.

Would be strange as he’s impressed most as a forward but seems like most players want that midfield time.

Very strong chance we also see him playing mostly forward, with stints in midfield. High half forward type.

According to Ch 7 his relationship with Petrevski-Seton was a large influence on him choosing Carlton.

You do IF the other party was just using you to drive up his salary. Which may we’ll be the case.
Fair enough. Becomes a bit of a moot point, essentially he just chose elsewhere, which is fair enough given indigenous links etc.

Reckon he would've added to our list, but he's no world beater and would have barely provided value for money at best.

Onwards and upwards, curious to see who else Sammy takes a shine to

Not sorry to miss out on Martin, paying too much on potential. Had 6 years in the system , hasn't done enough to justify what he was asking for.
Carlton could be big winners but could just as easily be losers out of it. Good luck to them hope it works out for them
