I really like JJ but is he a "hold at all costs" player?
I prefer to keep him but if we can bring in bookends and he attracts big dollars elsewhere, he deserves his payday and can go with our blessing
Agreed but I'd argue he already got his payday from us. If he gets larger dollars elsewhere more than happy for him to leave for it with no hard feelings.

I think Schache's best role at the club is in the VFL. Takes the number one key defender to allow our other forwards to develop.

I don't think he will be on our list next year.

You're all probably too young to remember Harold Solomon and his moon-ball lobs. My junior tennis coach tried to instill it in my game, but I was a huge Newk attack-at-all-costs devotee in those days. It was only as I played tennis in my older years (post-30) that I found the value in defensive lobs, especially to some young tyro at the net who was hoping to finish the point in a couple of strokes. Also came in handy against far older players who couldn't turn and chase quickly. Ah, the good old days!

Anyway, nothing to do with Rory - although at his height, he'd make one hell of a tennis player.

Fan favourite on thin ice and my mind instantly goes to JJ. OOC, has been on a big contract for relatively meh production, we got a bit weird/hush hush about his lengthy injury absence this year.

Possibly receiving a lowball offer from us to make up for the overs we’ve been paying him?

Hunter is the other I just assume is on thin ice most of the time because he gets in trouble for some reason or another what feels like every second year. Iirc he was a reason for dunks trade request in 2020? Could be remembering that wrong.

Wallis is a fan favourite but is plain old cooked. Cordy could be gone but most would not lose sleep over that.

They probably wouldn't, but would be disappointing if his career fades away.

He is, and will always be, our first goal kicker in the 2016 GF, and still remains one of only 42 premiership players our club has had.
(He also deployed the "knee of calamity" to great effect in the prelim. And you can see the passion when he plays, or even when is a sub, or often in the rooms after a victory he hasn't been part of - Zaine is always in there pumping everyone up. He might be a limited footballer - not that I agree he is as limited as many think - but he is a heart and soul Bulldog.)

Maybe he can play a Shaggy Hargrave role as a third tall, especially if Keath is also fading? If Logue and Jones do eventuate, and Keath struggles, that third tall position will be between Gardner, Cordy and O'Brien.

I think he could be fitter as well.

JJ has played well since moving forward. Provides a point of difference with our other mids/smalls, and still has that pace he can use to great effect.

I'd be disappointed to lose him, still has a lot to offer. I agree that the contract would be significantly less, not sure he is getting a huge offer elsewhere though, maybe just longer. Hopefully the club doesn't lowball him too much, and he understands where he sits in terms of value, and still wants to be a part of it.

I still remember that game he had 42 v Saints, and got 3 Brownlow votes - I don't expect to see that JJ again, but still believe he has plenty to offer the RW&B.

Spot on I think he still has a place in the side and does have a point of difference.

At the right price he is a keep

He doesn’t get to enough ground balls to pressure the defenders.

Fair call, but JJ, West and Weightman is a superior combination to most we've rolled out in recent years. JJ looks to have more natural forward instinct than many of the mids or role players we've rolled through there over the years. Honeychurch, VDM, McComb, Roarke, Hrovat, Hunter, Scott, Lipinski, Richards, Cavarra, etc. For various reasons, some being that they were mids being shoe-horned in there, or just not up to the standard. I rate JJ's last 12 months or so above all of them as forwards.

I think JJ is highly rated at the club and loved by the players, long list of others ahead of him who would be on thin ice.
JJ can actually hit a target and run fast at the same time. A commodity in short supply at the Dogs.

The Bont to JJ Kick is prime example of what JJ brings to this team
We lack the pure speed in our half forwards, the ability to burn his oppo and sneak out the back is something we are lacking.

yes, great time to resign JJ and Hunter on reduced contracts, their value is at all time lows so why would we even consider trading them.

and the external view of JJ (including Cooney) is ignorant of his better recent form when he gets on the park.

Hunter has a few years left on his deal..

Hunter still has 2 years left on what I would assume is a sizeable contract given he signed it a few months after winning the best and fairest.

There’s every chance the club see that as dead weight now and may look for any suitors to free up cap space to bring in targeted acquisitions. They may be confident that we can replace his wing role with different sorts of players in Williams, Bedendo, Scott etc. on a fraction of the cost after a full pre-season.

There’s long been a debate on his actual effectiveness to the side (which I think he is very effective) but there’s no sidestepping around the fact that he wasn’t best 22 at round 1 and has given us practically zilch on-field this year despite having no injuries.

I think the reference to the players on thin ice is Wallis and Cordy. Thin ice to me means that their contract status is in peril - could go either way

I can say with 99% certainty that Hunter is on thin ice with the club due to off-field antics.
