I really like JJ but is he a "hold at all costs" player?
I prefer to keep him but if we can bring in bookends and he attracts big dollars elsewhere, he deserves his payday and can go with our blessing
JJ has been really valuable since he came back from injury. He knows just what to do, I like the ball in his hands. I’d be surprised and disappointed if he was given the flick. As far as Wally is concerned it looks like his AFL days may be over but would be a valuable development assistant in the VFL. Besides, it would be like chopping Bambi. 😢

Hunter still has 2 years left on what I would assume is a sizeable contract given he signed it a few months after winning the best and fairest.

There’s every chance the club see that as dead weight now and may look for any suitors to free up cap space to bring in targeted acquisitions. They may be confident that we can replace his wing role with different sorts of players in Williams, Bedendo, Scott etc. on a fraction of the cost after a full pre-season.

There’s long been a debate on his actual effectiveness to the side (which I think he is very effective) but there’s no sidestepping around the fact that he wasn’t best 22 at round 1 and has given us practically zilch on-field this year despite having no injuries.
good point, we may shop him around as a salary dump

The club has had trouble reigning in Hunter since he came to the club.

There was the stupid betting incident, unreported crap at the hub amongst well publicised others.

She's a dickbag but Caroline Wilson has good sources. She's reported twice since Hunter signed his last deal that rival clubs (Richmond & Carlton iirc) believe he is unhappy.

Make the change imo. But can we risk losing two experienced players in Hunter and one of our others OOC?

Hunters definitely one, he’s not good enough to put up with the off field BS like you would with say Baz. He was out of the side already parts of this year and last, plus hes on rumoured 600+ from reports around his contract extension. Way too much for his output - if we can dump that this year it’s a win, if we manage to increase our draft hand a little bit too then that’s a bonus but can’t imagine us getting much for him.

He’s a long long way from his BNF form right now, and I’ve been a fan of his in the past. Would rather build around Williams and Bedendo on the wings, with our stacked midfield full of accumulators, an accumulator on the wing is the last thing we need. We need high impact from our wings.

Not sure who the other one would be, don’t think JJ - he’s pretty well behaved these days, new father etc. and he’s absolutely a keep on a low wage on his on field worth - may be able to get more cash elsewhere but that’s not us pushing him out.

Could be anyone really

Antics? Or personal problems? Not necessarily the same thing.

Antics that lead to personal problems. The drinking problem still hasn't been reined in, and his nickname amongst certain circles of friends is ''pinga'' for a good reason, he is one of the key reasons Dunkley wanted to leave two years ago due to hub antics as well.

When Hunter is on his AA / B&F worthy, not someone I'd want to lose, but his form the last season or so has been questionable to not-even in the side, and his contract is north of 600k a year, we can cover wing easily between Scott/Williams/Bedendo and our 400 other midfielders who can play outside.

If he wanted out at the end of this season would I bat an eyelid? No, would suck to see another premiership player walk but times change and we need cap and capital to get defenders.

I’m curious to hear what people think Hunters actually worth? At his best I’d say mid to late first but he hasn’t been there in a while, has the off-field issues and is on a largish contract. I think whoever would get him would get a pretty good deal as it’d probably be the wake up call he needs to realise he can still make great money for another 5+ years if he pulls his head in otherwise his career will pitter out to nothing. And they’ll probably get a pretty solid experienced player for a number of years - I think with the salary dump we’d be doing very well to get a 2nd for him to be honest.

Hunter is an outside player that is slow moving and a frequent ball butcher in a team that has a quality of disposal issue and can look one paced across the midfield. He had other ways of impacting games at his best but he hasn’t been at that level for too long. We wouldn’t lose anything from our current side if he left at this point.

Yeah third rounder probably. He’s still a great defensive wingman but so is Scott and he costs us 2o0k a year, not 650k.

Essendon will only offer a third.

I’d hope a second rounder but if we’re pushing him a third is more likely.

Bundle it up with our first for Lobb & Logue? Would be a great result for us, our first is overs for Logue and our 3rd unders for Lobb so probably evens out - would only need another 300k of cap space for both with Hunters contract off the books.

Bring in Jones and still have a decent 2nd & 2x good 3rds to take to the draft whilst completely turning our spine from a weakness to a huge strength (for next season at least, would still need to fix the backline long term)

I don’t know what Hunter is worth (late 2nd?), but he’s not a good kick and we can’t have him and Baz butchering the ball on both sides of the ground.

I’m a fan of Williams growing into that wing role. Yes, he’s been poor since the GF but played some pretty decent footy before that. Unfortunately for him I think Red has gone past him and Khamis probably will too when it comes to a role in the back line so fingers crossed he can make that wing position his own.

I really really really hope we don't trade for Rory Lobb. Would we ever consider playing our 3 current young talls in Engish, Darcy and JuH in the same team along with Lobb???? Not in a million years.

Then why-o-why do it...?

I don't understand if this is a legitimate question. Sweet is a better straight up ruckman than Lobb, but Lobb is 10x the forward... and he can pinch hit and compete in the ruck. The two aren't comparable. Sweet is a no. 1 ruck but we already have English.

If any player is in a position where the club is letting it be known that they are on thin ice, then in all likelihood the club would be happy just to have their salary off the books and do a late swap of picks to facilitate the trade.

If there is any truth to these rumours then said player has little to no trade value now.

Darcy development. Thats my only concern about the Lobb move.

I see Darcy as more of a forward/ruck than defender mind you.

For those who are looking at a small fast pressure forward, what is your opinion on Lazzaro. Hasn't had a great year and is on the outer ot the Roos but has some genuine talent and speed. Also a pretty solid shot at goal.
