I am a little bit surprised about the angst over Lobb from some sections on here.

We have:

One competent, capable ruckman - slightly prone to concussion - but extremely valuable around the ground and improving as a tap ruckman.
One younger, stop gap/break glass in case of emergency ruckman.
Stefan Martin - a deceased ruckman, sadly acquired two to three years too late.
Darcy - who may be anything or nothing as he hasn't played a senior game and taller players take longer to develop and thrive in the seniors.

Our one, potential dominant ruck - wants to ruck on a 80/20 basis and has indicated he will leave if he's forced to share (according to rumours).

So we need - a forward/ruck - who is comfortable with a 20/80 split in ruck and is good up forward.

So we have found a forward/ruck, who is 22nd in the goal kicking, a competent ruckman when required, willing to move across, willing to take a pay cut to do so, available, in the best form of his career, allows us to accommodate English's desires - and people are unhappy he's not the reincarnation of Gary Dempsey and Simon Beasley combined for some reason ???

Who else would you like ? Other options of a similar size to do a similar role that I can quickly think of are: King brothers, Chol (GCS), Marshall (Port), De Koning (Carlt), Thilthorpe (Adel), Casboult (GCS) or Daniher (Bris).

Which one of those are we prying free ??
Honestly I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Lobb looks like a bit of a knob and acted like a bit of a knob towards Boyd in the 2016 prelim.

The best we have looked recently was when we were crushing sides at the start of last year with Naughton, Bruce and English forward and English supporting Martin in the ruck. Lobb allows us to get back to that structure with English as main ruck and Lobb in the third forward role.

Another factor is fans can have a tendency to think (or hope) that our young players are going to become stars overnight and that they are going to leave if they don't have a walk up start in the team. Marra and Darcy are not quite there yet and when you are contending you bet on known commodities over speculative ones. If either of those guys do become a star overnight, happy days they push Lobb or Bruce out of the side and we are better for it. In fact having to work harder for that spot in the team is going to make them better faster.

By the time Marra and Darcy are primed Lobb and Bruce will be ready to head off into the sunset and we have an instant succession.

If we are looking to trade out Hunter he would be worth basically zero. I’m a fan, and yes I agree his disposal is poor. He can find the ball though, could probably even play midfield in plenty of other sides, but we are kidding ourselves if we think he has trade value.

A Fourth round type swap of picks would be my guess.

Correct. The value is in freeing up his salary cap space.

Couple of cheap back up options if we can't land Lobb

Elliot Himmelberg- Crows
Showed great signs as a marking forward last year but hasn't been able to recapture that form this year. Could easily be used in defense as he played that in SANFL for a while

Cody Brand- Bombers 195cm Weight: 89kg
One of the best key defenders in his draft year, has really built his body to handle more 1v1 contests and his ability to move the footy is offt
I rate him as a great long-term prospect

Josh Eyre- Bombers 198cm Weight: 85kg
Great marking forward that showcased that talent against the dogs in the vfl. Has great ariel control and lead up patterns
I see him as a future Harrison Jones type of player

Are any of these genuine f/r though like Lobb?

Is Jake Stein from GWS worth a sniff as a KPD?
Good name, horrible hair (although would fit right in at WO).
I believe he is OOC as a rookie?

my mates knock on him was defensive running, but he said he was a decent inside mid otherwise, havent watched him enough myself to have an opinion
He’s soft and doesn’t find the pill at AFL level, Will Hayes was just in the team before him definitely not what we need

We're going to end up with Ryan Lester

4/5 ruckmen/ruck utilities is about right for a list, English with Sweet back up, Lobb with Darcy back up I’d be comfortable going in with. Probably draft another one too as you constantly need a pipeline of ruckmen coming through as your non-playing backups don’t stick around for long before they ship off for more opportunity.

Sad Jim Carrey GIF

Griffin Logue playing backup ruck to Sean Darcy. Bevo just got interested.

People saying that Hunter is past it - he was equal 6th in 2021 for goal assists in the AFL with 22. Only McCluggage, Macrae, Himmelberg, Bont, and Zorko were ahead of him. I appreciate that that was last year not this year, but I think it's fair to say his 2022 has been severely interrupted. Presuming his recovery from his issues of this year is complete (and no team is going to trade for him if they're not, anyway) I think he could go back to being a valuable contributor in 2023.

was speaking to a Carlton friend,

what about Dow as an inside mid, trade for Hunter, they need a wingman

He is crap. Carlton fans love overrating their list though.

If Mccomb was on their list they would talk him up to be the next coming of Christ. In fact compared to Dow he is the coming of Christ.
