I don’t want to lose Dunks but not overly concerned at all if he leaves.
A lot of people saying West has no form, he’s not going to replace Dunks yada yada, of course he has no form there he’s never really played there at senior level - but I’ve watched his whole career in the 2s and knew he was going to make the step up to AFL level; and I know he’s going to make the step up to midfielder. Kids a mid, and will be a very very good one - he’s a bull, honestly whether Dunks stays or goes he should be getting time in there now we need his type. I really can’t see teams walking out the front of the centre circle when West is in there to be honest.
Of course you never have a perfect replacement ready to go for losing a good player, otherwise they wouldn’t be a replacement, but a 23yo West is as close as it gets to a perfect replacement.
Honestly if it came down to West leaving for opportunity and us getting unders like a 2nd/3rd round pick or Dunks leaving for a first, I’d probably keep West.
Two close to top 10 picks, one on a key defender (ideally in a trade) and take one to the draft and pick the best mid with a point of difference (ie big bodied with burst speed ideally) and we’d really be in an unbelievably good list spot going forward - better than the early days of Bont, Macrae, Stringer etc as this time round the spine is 1000x better and the old guard will still be very very good.

It's probably a case of McGovern not wanting to go anywhere so they cant trade him. Eagles probably don't want to trade barrass but if they can get a good deal from him it's better to do so.

English is in AA discussions and missed half the season any thought of trading him now is ridiculous he has broken out and will only get better

Timmy is maybe in fringe AA squad conversation, but even that is extremely unlikely. Gawn, Sean Darcy and even Darcy Cameron have been better ruckman than him this year. As good as he is around the ground I'd be lying if I said I go into any game thinking we have any sort of ruck supremacy.

That’s the scary thing we are making decisions on players both trading out, delisting and trading in WHEN the whole structure and way we play is messy in the head of our coach and assistants.
How you make decisions right now is beyond me
Player swaps for any players worth more than a 3rd round pick are a thing of the past.
The one hole I see in the Barass story is what does this mean for Bont?
If we are going to lure a WA boy, from a club from WA, which is one of the most successful clubs in the leagues history, who is earmarked as a future captain, wouldn’t we need to offer him the captaincy?

Well whether we sort them or not we still need better options! But yeah if it’s not fixed next year surely Bev is gone and that’s the first thing that gets fixed in ‘24
Dunks gone for top 10 pick, send it to Eagles plus our first next year for Barrass. Jones for free.
Build defence around Jones fullback, Barrass CHB, Darcy/Keath if fit and finds form, Gardner back up. Cordy gone. Plenty of options.
Hunter & JJ gone for cap space (although I’d keep JJ if possible but I don’t think it’s likely) West into midfield rotations, need another small forward / ideally better than Rowe but would take him as a DFA.
Lobb for a 2nd rounder, take our original 1st rounder to the draft for a big bodied midfielder, and 2x 3rds for small forwards/wings.

I’m talking about succession planning. A mid drafted this year will only be 22 in four years. Can see Bont cruising the backline for a few years in his 30s but he’ll be done as a top midfielder by then most likely.
Aside from Dunkley, Smith is the only younger, best 22 member of our squad getting regular midfield mins.
I like West and Garcia, but neither is getting midfield time atm and Garcia’s not even in the side. I doubt either will be the main man in the middle.

He has played 14 games and his 2 or so games post-injuries were trash - stats are irrelevant in this scenario. He's had a very good season but hasn't featured enough and hasn't been consistent enough. He's close on talent but not close on actual season output.

Most of West Coast's salary squeeze is surely due to older players. Gaff, Shuey, McGovern, Nic Nat, Yoe. They'd be crazy to let Barrass go but keep those blokes on a list that needs a full rebuild.

I love Bont too but he’s been a long way off his best this year. I’d be quite surprised if he makes it into the side, or even the squad.
Gawn/Darcy/Cameron have all had poor games this year too you realise and have all bar Cameron missed games, You wanted evidence that he is in discussions whether you agree with it or not it is there.
