Because we havent announced any list changes as yet?

The ability of defenders to intercept the ball and kill attacks dead is the foundation on which modern premierships are built.

It was once our greatest strength. Now its our Achilles heal.

Its all very well and good to have sublime and creative users of the ball in the back half as we do. However, if they can't or aren't backed up by KPD who can intercept or kill the ball then they tend to get exposed.

Ive been getting an uneasy feeling as the season unfolded that our side is being set up to fight yesterdays war. I think we'll get a better idea of this if a team can take down Geelong's tall forwards over the next couple of weeks. For mine, either the Swans or the Pies are best equiped to do this.

Either way. We need a massive reset in how we approach and set up for games. Because it never stands still.
It's my belief throughout VFL/AFL history that making the finals was based on scoring goals but winning finals was based on stopping goals.
All the great teams seem to have good solid defences. Even if they weren't big name defences they were a tight knit team back there. Like us in 2016.
A great defence also creates goals, ours does that. We just don't stop them.

Baz will bounce back next season. Had a shitty year off field and it impacted him on it. Cleans up his disposal and he could be a top 20-30 player in the league. I wouldn't worry too much.
If anything, this year it was worse, esp after his enforced break. Big challenge for him.
Don't disagree with the rest though.

We could do with another interceptor but 80% of the issue is that we allow for easy flat ball to ping pong from end to end with basically no pressure on the kicker.

Our defenders would intercept more if we actually force turnovers or at very least high scrappy ball.
Yeah we need to stop the unpressured entries but our key defenders for a lot of this year were Cordy & Gardner, these would be hands down the worst intercept markers in the league.

Only person of any note who can intercept is Ed & Keath if he finds his form and finally gets out of the number 1 role. Buku should be a lock next year

Norths financial offer to Logue must be big to get him to leave WA.

Frustrating, as he’d be perfect for us.
Freos only offering 500k, and they have no room in their backline for him. He’s a shithouse forward.

Surely you’d come to us for say 600 over 650 at North (considering he’s spent his hole career rebuilding already)

I would give my left testie for Hayden Young from Fremantle. A defensive minded HBF who knows when to attack and when to defend something ours struggle to decipher.

Best HBF in the comp as far as I'm concerned. I'd take him over any of ours and the AA players

If we lose Dunkley I would love to somehow trade up into the top 5 of the draft and grab Tsatas. Guy has extreme speed and could potentially go straight onto a wing from R1. I hope we are looking to address our leg speed with later picks in the draft also.

If we lose Dunks we would be in great position to trade up to West Coast's pick 3 (3 after Ashcroft bid). The WA kids are projected to go 8 to 20 ish, which we'd likely be loaded with.

Guarantees us one of Tsatas or Sheezel.

For those dead-against Lobb (seriously stop listening to Daisy Thomas), you need to take into account the following:

- Jamarra (20) & Darcy (19) are still very much developing. Neither should be relied upon week-to-week as key position locks in the short-term.

- Bruce (30) has looked completely cooked since returning from a knee and wasn’t much chop as a 2nd ruck anyway. He’s another that may be tried in defence.

- Naughton may be required in defence if we can’t recruit KPD’s. Don’t think it’s first choice, but suspect we want it as an option anyway.

- We desperately need a 2nd ruck option. Darcy isn’t ready for this.

- Also need more ruck options/depth (ones that Bevo will actually pick). Also take into account some insurance for English (concussion).

There’s a very good reason why Power and co have eyed off Lobb for some time.

If we want to still compete short term and have a solid tie-over until Darcy etc come on, then he’s a no-brainer.

Yes, yes and yes. Thomas's peak is his role as a shill for those sports betting grifters.

Meanwhile, the Dunkley charade continues. 🙄

So we play only one of JUH or Darcy (possibly slowing their development) each week up forward and move either Naughton or Bruce back to squeeze in Lobb. All to fix a second ruck option which hardly our biggest issue. Defence,1st ruck, small forwards, wings.
We are desperate for 1 quality ruck not a second one. You miss our finals defeats over the last 4 years?
We have possibly a better forward/ruck in English and Darcy to come but we need another.
I mostly agree with you regarding the ruck, but the club will back English in for now, who has always looked way more effective with a second ruck anyway. Lobb is the best option out there.

As I previously wrote, relying on Darcy and Jamarra to just walk in Round 1 and stay there all year isn’t realistic. Bruce is also a big query.

Right now, Lobb is well ahead of at least 2 of those players.

Bruce may well be cooked.
If we're relying on an (often double-teamed) Naughton and two raw kids as our forward options next year, I don't like our chances.

We chased Soldo last year and given Richmond need to clear the decks for Hopper & Taranto, he might be gettable. If we miss out on Lobb, I'd be asking the question of Soldo. Probably means Timmy can have a little less time in the ruck per quarter and if he misses a game, Soldo can adequately fill in as a no 1 ruck too. Two birds, one stone.
Wouldn't cost a huge amount so we can still chase a KPD although the market is thin and I'm not sure who is available.

Last I heard he was likely to leave - and his father has a big influence on him.
AD hates the Swans for the way things finished up so he's all for milking every cent while you can - loyalty can get stuffed so to speak.
My opinion: I'm so F^&*(ing sick of seeing his name up in trade talks every year. Just leave and we all move on.
The sh1t thing is that we'll have a fight on our hands to land pick 8 - these negotiations never go smoothly.

Thanks.
Required players rarely sign with the same club after a season is finished - who was the last for us? Sweet last year after the West Coast offer, and Lake did it once (his last contract with us).
Apart from that it tends to be fringe or developing guys who sign late. Your Macraes, Bailey Smiths, Daniels, Bonts, etc all sign during the season.

Yeah, I’d easily take Soldo, would suit as a sidekick for English and I’m assuming he isn’t that old anyway? He wouldn’t cost much.

Just whether he’s a little too lumbering for Bevo to stick with?

26 years old - perfect.
He's a big unit but not overly lumbering - I doubt we would have chased him last year if he wasn't our 'type'.

Liam Jones named in the QAFL Team of the Year after only playing half a season
