After seeing him lumbering around at the start of the year, I'm not convinced. I thought he'd be fantastic for us this year but as much as I love the bloke, he's cooked.
Reports that we're set to give O'Brien another year are terrible too. Great guy but he just isn't the player we bought when we paid up for the FA contract.
I agree but if the alternative is to bring in other clubs equivalent of Mclean (Dominate VFL but to slow/no point of difference for AFL) I would rather keep our own. You could add Sullivan to this group aswell, I hope he gets a go don't get me wrong just hope it isn't with us.

If Tim wants to go back to WA I am all in to get Harley Reid even if it is Tim plus our first pick with pick 1 and a second round WCE pick in return. We either go with Sweet of if we think he is not up to it get Grundy for very little.

I doubt any team pays up big for Tim, or any ruckman.
'Competitive' journeymen ruckmen that can nullify a contest are good enough, and allow you to spend cap elsewhere.

Geelong won the flag last year with Rhys Stanley. Collingwood paid to get Grundy off the list and play Cameron. Port have gone into games this year without a ruck. Unless it's already someone you have, it's dead capital.

Luke Jackson.

Tim will be an interesting case study long term. He’s obviously going to be paid big bucks as a ruckman but he’s not your typical ‘dominant’ ruckman.

He offers a lot more around the ground compared to every other ruck in the league as an extra midfielder so you’re not paying for someone who dominates the hitouts and takes a couple of good marks each week (which IMO has minimal value).

I wonder if he would have been a superstar 5 years ago but today from a cost/benefit analysis his contract vs output vs influence on results isn't quite what we need.

We're behind a lot of trends
  1. no real gun small forward (Weightman is more of a hybrid player)
  2. no gun pure interceptor defender (a la Lever, Blakey, Luke Ryan, Steward, Ridley)
  3. no dangerous wings (right now running with a re-purposed defender and two delisted free agents
  4. and arguably, no pure defensive mid - all of our mids are ball hunters and accumulators, with Bont doing a ridiculous job of being a tackling mid too
Point no 2 is a real issue as we barely have a competent CHB on our list to go with that. Gardner battles as a 'Dale Morris from Wish.com' type and Keath tries to run and rebound, and JOD is doing what he can but is far too raw to be a week in, week our proposition as yet.

I still don't think we're a premiership list so perhaps my expectations are a bit lower than most but we're a 'scrape into the finals' list right now.

In hindsight (and I was surprised we weren't interested at the time) Isaac Smith would have been brilliant for us....

Yep,

Point 2 is what we are most desperate for and it's not just for the intercept ability it's the run and carry and dare those players bring offensively which is our other massive weakness which is exposed badly without JJ

1. Hopefully Clarke come on after another preseason and we can trade up to bring in Watson, if not then get Sanchez a little later. Watson Would completely rejuvenate our forward half.

2. Ideally Buss gets a full pre season and continues to Build, I'd be happy backing in he and or JOD at this stage and Focus on that run and carry with Jones our Anchor. Keath and Gardner only break glass.

3. Wings are a massive hole. Hopefully Poulter keeps Progressing. Ideally we can find draft capital to Bring in Lual for the other wing or for point 2. Looks like Henry will be our other wing.

4. B.Smith needs to be our Defensive mid atleast until he gets some confidence back. Rather then needing to try and do to much just strip the game right back and get back to instinct.

Clarke hopefully but we still need at least 1 if not 2 more small forwards

Buss/JOD are more likely to become our key defence pairing which is actually exciting to think about and whilst both have great intercept ability we still need that intercepting/distributing type more then anything that has the ability to Run + Carry/Intercept/Hit the risky kicks like a Stewart/Ridley/Blakey type

Poults and Smith are just far too soft

It you're wanting Busslinger to be a key defender you'll be disappointed.

I don't agree Poulter or Smith are soft.
Poulter needs to add muscle to his frame and at 194cm needs to be given time.
Smith is extremely out of form and his disposal has gotten worse but I'd never label him soft.

Buss can be in the Darcy Moore style of KPD easily

Watch Smith attempt to tackle and Poults has shirked multiple contests in multiple games now it is a genuine worry

No way Buss gets anywhere near Moore. He is either a Ridley type or bust.

Smith of the last few months I agree but that doesn't reflect the player he is merely the player our system is turning him into.
Poulter is one of my favourites and his upside is huge, and the idea of him being soft isn't something I can Fathem. He has saved multiple goals going back with the flight of the ball the last few weeks. The biggest issue is his consistency from play to play and week to week but that is an issue for our whole squad not just Poulter who is 194cm and 20 years old.

Agree with this but also need a midfielder with speed who can use the ball like a Butters or Rozee. We had one but he has disappeared in Bazza just look at the 2021 finals where has that Bazza gone.

What midfield attributes does Smith bring to the table ? Not now as seems confidence is low.

I agree with the sentiments regarding Bailey Smith.
Talent is not lost as a few on here would trade him tomorrow.
We can just have faith that he is receiving all assistance he needs to regain the 2021 form.

Moore is a tall player who is a good intercept mark and a poor 1 on 1 player how is Buss not able to be that style of player?

Whether he gets to the same level sure you can argue that but stylistically he is no where near Ridley who is an elite kick and plays with run and dash

In the words of Ricky Bobby "if you ain't first, you're last".

This group, with this coaching set up isn't winning anything soon. IMO we need to jettison players that won't be part of our next premiership push. Play the kids and hit the Draft hard over the next 3 - 4 years. No more trades for 27-30 year olds. Only free agents that fill a need should be considered.
In a perfect world Bazza, VDM , Williams, Scott and co would have hungry 20-22 year olds pressuring them for a spot in the 22.

Further to Bailey , we had the bad old days of the 70's when we traded top end talent for various reasons

Typically mentioned on many occasions Thorpe , Dempsey etc and a young local lad Dennis Collins RIP.
Bailey reminds me of Dennis, the young kids loved him , a dashing young lad and losing him ripped us apart.
Cheers
Stephen

On the weekend Zaine Cordy looked like the player we all thought he'd be after 2016.

14 disposals with 10 intercepts.

Dogs reach out to Noah Balta management earlier this year to see if he would be keen for a trade

Sadly we got rejected as he's seen as long term prospect for Richmond and wants to be part of their rebuild
