My thoughts too. It seems a perfect storm with McKercher too, 2 year draftee contract, sign a 2 year extension then wait for the $$$ to come from the Tassie team. We certainly need his type though and I guess we would just have to back ourselves in to make him want to stay and hope he enjoys life in Melbourne.

Worst case if he did go home, he won't be a free agent and Tassie will be given alot of tools to get a good trade done.

I think he's the one for us should we get pick 4 with Duursma likely gone and Watson's height being a risk that high in the draft.
Who we get if we get pick from GC will depend who the roos pick with their Ben compo pick imo, if they pick a small forward in Watson and not another mid then we get McKercher, otherwise it will be Watson

Given we won’t get much for Sweet, would it be worth throwing in pick 36 (end up 40 odd) and try for Bergman?
Durum’s would cost far more pick wise and cap wise I think
Bergman is worth more than Duursma.

I come in peace, what are Sweets strengths? Obviously he's had a pretty dominant VFL year, interesting to see that his hit out stats have only been low when surpassed by other AFL or near AFL level rucks. Briggs from GWS, Hickey from Syd, Moyle from GC. Even in those games he had stil won 2/5 of the hitouts. So it looks like he can ruck and at least be competitive at AFL level, he'll probably start round 1 for us and get a great opportunity to develop.

The questions on him for us will be, does he follow up at ground level and get involved, but more importantly we have a desperate need for someone that can also clunk some marks around the ground. Does he take contested marks? Lycett for us doesn't take marks, it is an issue for us and means we are always just focusing on getting the ball to ground.

If we get Watson. We'd have Weightman, Watson, West, Jones at the feet of Naughton and Jamarra. All of them like to chase hard off the ball and create pressure. If we are not able to lock the ball inside 50 with that forward line, and stop teams walking it out with ease, something is wrong with our system.
Also you’d like to think it’s a pretty enticing proposition for a forward line assistant coach even if Bevo is a control freak.

He doesn’t take contested marks unfortunately that’s really the main thing that’s held him back, he’s a pretty old school ruckman which Bev doesn’t rate. He’s a pretty strong tap ruckman, great aggression and follow up in the contest, he’s actually got decent enough skills when he gets the opportunity but doesn’t get a lot of it. He’s pretty much an all or nothing centre square ruckman, but admittedly hasn’t had a lot of opportunity to develop further at AFL level so who knows how he’ll go with a bit more responsibility.

I quite like him, really strong rate of development too but he’s pretty limited, I think he makes it as an old school ruck and will make your midfield better but wouldn’t expect much around the ground

This is how I have the first round going. (Minus Sanders and Suns bids)
If it goes like this who do we take or do we trade pick 11?
1. WCE Harley Reid
2. Roos Daniel Curtin
3. Roos Colby McKercher
4. Hawks Zane Duursma
5. Formerly Suns Nick Watson
6. Melb Nate Caddy
7. GWS Darcy Wilson
8. Cats Connor O'Sullivan
9. Dons Ollie Murphy
10. Crows Caleb Windsor
11. Dogs
I think we trade for pick from the suns and I think the kangas pick Watson and we land McKercher

Dursma to Cats IMO. Has a year left on reasonable count Cans need to replace Smith. They’ll structure property…..oops I mean contact to fit him in.
Can’t see us forking out much coin during trade period. Next year will see is at tipping point.

Of course, we don't have the Cats bottomless wink, wink, nudge, nudge property/sweetheart sponsor arrangements cap.

Buku would be an awesome fit for Hawks, he’ll never be a star but he’s athletic, great mark and accurate set shot. I think he’d be good for 30 goals a year in the right setup & the quick ball movement that the hawks provide

Can Ryan play 2nd ruck? If so Buku would slot in nicely as the 3rd tall alongside him & Lewis
Not Ryan more Max Ramsden our developing forward and chop out ruck there are high raps internally on him. He played as 38 in the semi final last weekend if you saw the game. Very agile for a 203cm bloke!

Thanks for that. Is he a good potential player at afl level simply stuck behind elite top end picks like Jamarra Naughton Darcy Croft?

He may just be a good vfl player. The problem around here is that people seem to have the impression that he is a kpp. In reality he is a 189-190cm utility, and to make it at afl level with his build you need some assets other than decent mark and set shot kick and the ability to contest a few ruck contests. He is yet to display those other assets.

I could genuinely see the Roos opting for Watson with one of their two picks (along with Curtin). Their forward line is Larkey, Zurhaar, and a bunch of spuds. And they have an over abundance of midfielders.

BULLDOGS FORWARD WEIGHING FUTURE

OUT-OF-CONTRACT Western Bulldogs forward Buku Khamis is contemplating his future after being starved of opportunities in 2023, despite a strong season in the VFL.

The 23-year-old managed only one game this season following the arrival of Rory Lobb and the continued emergence of Jamarra Ugle-Hagan.

Khamis kicked 41 goals from 18 appearances for Footscray, including five in last Saturday's semi-final loss to Box Hill after three in the first final against Casey, with only Gold Coast pair Chris Burgess and Brodie McLaughlin kicking more.
It is understood that the Western Bulldogs have tabled an offer for 2024 to Khamis' management, but multiple clubs have enquired about his services, with the athletic utility to weigh up his options over the coming weeks before making a decision.

Khamis joined the club as category B rookie via the next generation academy in 2018 and has played 10 games since making his debut in 2021.
The Bulldogs delisted Tim O'Brien, Robbie McComb and Cody Raak on Monday after Mitch Hannan was delisted last month and Josh Bruce retired.

Taylor Duryea, Hayden Crozier, Toby McLean and Roarke Smith are all yet to receive deals for next season and are likely to be forced to wait until after the trade period next month. – Josh Gabelich

DOGS SET FOR BUSY OFF-SEASON

THE WESTERN Bulldogs are hopeful that an active off-season will inject new life into their premiership push next year, with the club looking to immediately bounce back from missing the finals in 2023.

The Dogs endured a disappointing campaign this season, their first without finals in five years, but have the ability to get flexible with list spots and are in contention to leap up the draft order and snare Gold Coast's available No.4 selection.

The club has also been linked with uncontracted Brisbane forward Kai Lohmann and Melbourne free agent James Jordon, while likely first-round pick Jordan Croft is also headed to the Dogs under father-son rules after a solid season as a 201cm key forward prospect.
Speaking on AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable last week, the Dogs' list and recruiting boss Sam Power said it put the club in a good position to attack the player movement market in the coming months.

"We're open to being active," Power said.

"We've got a lot of flexibility at the moment, with list spots and what we might be able to do. We've got a really open mind as well, whether that's through the trade period or through the draft.

"Going into every acquisition period, we want to improve the list and get better. But we won't go out and bring a lot of players in just for the sake of doing it. It'll be very targeted, which we have been over a period of time now and pretty balanced as well in terms of whether that's through the trade period or draft." – Riley Beveridge

I like his tap work and he doesn’t mind making his presence felt. Doesn’t seem to take a lot of contested grabs and disposal can be so so. At 25 though I still think his best is to come.
Problem for him though is English’s best is still yet to come.

An important point to consider regarding Sweet is that with additional specialist ruck coaching he has improved on previous seasons. Prior to this year he looked very much like a good but limited VFL ruck and I've been sceptical that he could take another step. Recently, he is more mobile and his follow-up work both after ruck contests and around the ground is better. Not saying he will walk into a No 1 ruck role but if he continues to improve, I think you've got a very handy ruckman for minimal outlay.

Very good 2s player,

He seems to have lost some weight and is moving around the ground better however his lack of marking has always been his biggest knock, Minimal upgrade on Lycett/Hayes unless he improves significantly

Should have been training and playing as a defender this year.
Utterly stupid that he’s still forward / ruck.

I would swap Sweet and a pick (maybe second) for Duursma.
Duursma isn’t worth that much. He’s become a fringe player that has regressed from his debut season. Hasn’t played more than 15 games in the past 4 seasons.

I’m fine with targeting him but he should be around pick 40-45 by himself in the open market.

Assuming Khamis goes, I don’t really think our KPP stocks are that bad.

Defenders
Jones
Keath
O’Donnell
Busslinger
Gardner

Rucks
English

Forwards
Naughton
Ugle-Hagan
Lobb
Darcy
Croft

Obviously we should draft a mature ruck, and maybe a beanpole at either end who is worth a crack, but I don’t see much wrong with that?
