Hmm. Personally I’d ask for more. He’s the best depth ruck just about in the AFL and the cupboard is bare with backup depth.

English historically hasn’t been the most durable player either.
Grundy, Lycett, Goldstein, Soldo, Sweet, Flynn, Fort and Hayes all potentially on the move.

Lloyd Meek and Max Lynch, both strong backup rucks stuck behind Darcy and Grundy respectively, were both essentially traded for future fourths.

If we didn’t have Croft, I wouldn’t want to trade 10 & 17 for 4. We have various holes and an overall lack of quality, so I’d rather have 2 picks go flesh out our team.

But due to Croft, it seems a no brainer. I doubt we are trading up for Watson though given that would be another year without drafting a high end midfielder.

Don't draft Croft. He isn't screaming out to be picked like Darcy and JUH were.

I haven't seen this suggestion trade future 1st and 17 for gc pick for (back ourselves to finish better next year) use pick 4 on one of Curtin Watson mckercher duursma and pick 10 on Wilson

I think that would actually work out better for us points wise and extra development in a top 10 talent Wilson also plays tough even when his team is getting wrecked

That won't do it for GC they need points this year

Some real worries with list composition unfortunately.

A bunch of young talent coming through who's best position seems to be key forward and a bunch of disgruntled, talented young mids who are being square peg round holed into other positions to accommodate the vets.

Naughton and Jamarra aren't going anywhere so can Darcy play somewhere else and not be found out for pace? Can he play ruck?

Croft coming through seems like another tall forward.

Very few convincing guys coming through as defenders outside of JOD and that's the huge position of need. Cleary looks like a poised Robert Murphy type but the coach never plays him.

Arty shown flashes but on the whole is unconvincing and Busslinger is entirely unconvincing. Both are positions of need but not good enough.

If English doesn't sign then we'd be left needing a ruck again. Sweet likely gone.

I'd never draft a young ruckman again personally. As it is we have Darcy who could be a ruck in time or at worst Fwd/Ruck and Croft coming in who could develope as a pinch hitter. I'd be looking at a break glass 24-28 year old who will take the pressure off of the young talls at VFL and can be a break glass option.
Rucks shuffle around to much to develop your own, especially considering the length of time they take to come on and the potential for Free Agency to get lowered with the new CBA.
Agree 100% not worth the investment in time and in Tim's case lost on field production. Much prefer to trade for a ready made option

It’s a good suggestion but the Suns need points this year, so they’ll want 10 & 17 i think

Darcy should be played as an intercept defender. He reads the ball well, we are desperate for one and there is no room for him in the forward line

That McGovern type of role would suit him.

I just fear he doesn't have the legspeed as an actual 1 on 1 defender at that height.

And that McGovern role is highly reliant on pressure being put on up the field to create indirect high balls. Our team currently does about zero of that.

I'd go a step further and not even bother trading for one. There are guys in the twos who I'd look at first for example Crossley is one we could get for free as a delisted free agent. He is only 25 and has matured greatly since his time with the Suns. There are a couple others in the WAFL and SANFL I like but the names escape me currently.

I'd be leaving Darcy as a Fwd/Ruck and have him take over that role From Lobb when he is ready.
Croft I'd let develop at full forward he is a long term prospect and by the time he is at AFL level lots could have changed, English could've moved on, naughton could've moved to defence or moved on, Jamarra could be on a wing like Richo.

Agree that’s the move long term for Darcy. Just don’t know when that change over will happen? In the meantime I’d rather get AFL games into him in the backline rather than VFL games as a forward.

I think he is ready to play half a season next year and then take over from Lobb completely in 2025

Braydon Preuss got traded for pick 31 but seems like the exception in the backup ruck merry-go-round. Most of the time its future thirds or fourths or slight pick upgrades.

I think Meek is a very good comparison of what to expect. Think they're pretty similar in gamestyle. Meek might have shown a little more at AFL level.
