Reckon the AFL should improve the veterans criteria - if you have played 100+ games and over 10 years with club - clubs should be able to add three veterans on top of the list.

We see great players leave the game early - often to other clubs - this would be a real reward for loyalty and would allow players to be managed and captain coach and be options to bring in if injury or form leading into finals.

Also allows three more young players to be added to list - we are seeing that current list sizes seem OK but when teams lose players in certain positions they are in trouble while a decent replacement has just retired or is in the State Leagues. Would add say clubs must take one more in draft and can take another or keep 1 or 2 for mid-season and significantly improve the quality of the games in the State Leagues.

Looks like Bevo is all but signed hopefully Bont is not far away from Re-Signing

BEVO IN, NOW WHAT ABOUT BONT?

LUKE Beveridge and the Western Bulldogs are in agreeance on a two-year extension, with the finer details to be signed off imminently.

It will take the 2016 premiership coach through to the end of 2027, making it 13 seasons at the helm of the club.

With Port Adelaide's Ken Hinkley-Josh Carr succession plan announced pre-season, Beveridge's signature will leave Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir as the only coach not with a firm deal beyond this season, with the Dockers implementing their 'ongoing employment' arrangement for their coach.

Beveridge and the Bulldogs' move will also put the spotlight firmly on Marcus Bontempelli's contract decision.

The Bont has waited for the start of the year, he has returned from injury, he has seen Ed Richards and co. sign up, he has opened his coffee shop and seen the coach's future become clear but he is still yet to kick off talks. The sense has been that it is going to start soon – but 'soon' has continued to stretch.

Bontempelli waited until late May to re-sign with the Dogs the last time he had a free agency contract decision in the middle of 2021 and indications were that the Bulldogs superstar was just about to start discussions. With Bevo about to be sealed, when will Bontempelli follow?

Some players might take that up if they feel they are totally cooked and just want to prolong their footy career for as long as possible, but I think the majority would be like Macrae and take offers to continue to play senior footy elsewhere rather than run around the surburban grounds waiting for a string of injuries to let them play a few games.

Come and join the greatest club on planet earth

COLLEGE basketballer Oscar Berry is poised to be the next Category B rookie to join the AFL, after meeting with six clubs across the past fortnight before returning to the United States.

Berry is understood to have undergone trials with the Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Essendon and Melbourne, while also sitting down with Geelong and St Kilda during his visit home. The 23-year-old grew up in Australia and last played a game of footy in an under-15 Essendon Districts Football League Grand Final for Aberfeldie, after being selected in the Western Jets' under-15 program.
Berry moved to Florida at the age of 16 when his dad landed a job as director of sports science and performance at the IMG Academy, where Berry finished high school alongside Charlotte Hornets guard Josh Green, who accepted an offer to join Greater Western Sydney's Academy before moving to America and being selected in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft.

After starting his collegiate career at Fairleigh Dickenson University in New Jersey, Berry transferred to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, where he finished his degree in March.

Clubs are understood to view Berry as an athletic key defender, in the mould of cricket convert James O'Donnell, who has played 36 games for the Western Bulldogs since being signed as a Category B rookie at the start of 2023.

The 196cm athlete was put through trials by development coaches, recruiters and even a GM, with clubs impressed by his athleticism and skills and expected to offer him a contract in the coming weeks.

Berry attended games with the Kangaroos, Demons, Bulldogs and Bombers and was invited into Alastair Clarkson's pre-game meeting before North Melbourne defeated Richmond at the MCG last month.
Oscar is the younger brother of Jordan Berry, who spent eight years punting in the NFL for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings after progressing through the Calder Cannons, before joining ProKick and heading to college. His other brother, Wilson, is currently a punter at the University of Kentucky after going through the Western Jets.

After nearly seven years in the United States, Berry is believed to be keen to return to Victoria and return to the game he played growing up, where he attended the Maribyrnong Sports Academy at the same time as North Melbourne gun Paul Curtis, Western Bulldogs swingman Buku Khamis and Carlton defender Jordan Boyd.
Berry was born in Brisbane but spent time in Perth when his father Jason landed a role with West Coast as a sports performance coach. The family then moved to Melbourne when Jason joined the high performance department at Essendon.

Category B rookies are eligible if they haven't registered in an Australian Football competition for three years or an international player, meaning they are not an Australian citizen and haven't lived in Australia for a substantial period.
Most are from Ireland, although clubs are constantly scouring far and wide to unearth free hits, like O'Donnell. Hawthorn signed two last year, adding rugby league player Matt Hill and former basketballer Jaime Uhr-Henry.

Collingwood and Gold Coast convinced Wil Parker and Zak Evans to walk away from cricket and join the AFL in 2024. Alex Keath played 109 games for Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs after returning to football in 2015.
Most college basketballers that have joined clubs as Category B rookies are project ruckmen, like Mate Colina at Richmond. Alex Condon has a unique agreement with Collingwood but has committed to remain at the University of Florida for another season, after playing Berry in a game earlier this year.

Matt Owies joined Carlton in 2018 as a Category B rookie after NCAA basketball for the University of Hawaii before returning to Melbourne to pursue a football career. Now with West Coast, the small forward has played 82 games.

Berry now looms as the next Category B rookie with a basketball background to join the AFL.

i'm glad we are shifting to taking punts on Cat B Players

JOD is a prime example of long term development of Athletic players
It sparks an interesting view of our list management as a whole

High value assets used on on-ballers and centre forward players (high impact players/goalkickers)
  • Sanders
  • Hynes
  • Jamarra
  • Darcy
  • Butters?

Low value assets used to flesh out the list with outside players (Freijah, Davidson) out of favour players from other clubs (Harmes, Bramble). Midfield scope is a bonus.

One of the stingiest back lines in the competition in the past 2 seasons that has consisted of:

Lobb - 2 second round picks
Jones - free
JOD - free
Buku - Cat B rookie
Dale - pick 45
Williams - pick 48
Bramble - free
Duryea - fourth round pick
Freijah - pick 45
Cleary - pick 61
JJ - pick 39 (rookie draft)

Additionally, Sellwood, who I’m very high on (MSD) and Jacques (Pick 29) both likely to spend time in the team this year

Taking swings on raw, athletic talls like JOD, Walker, now potentially Berry. Intelligent recruitment, and backing in our ability to develop players.

Impact per $ spent - Smart allocation of cap room and assets, turning low value into high production.

Kudos to the list management team in recent years who have smashed it.

Just look at the footy landscape as well

So many clubs are at the tight end of their salary caps

While the Dogs are one of the potential biggest spenders coming up

An excellent perspective on how we have approached it. Some absolute bargains in our defence.

Our premiership defense had one pick in the 40s (Wood) and a mixture of rookies, PSD & DFA picks.

Smart acquisitions can really set you up. The fact we have two Cat B rookies who can play there is a godsend.

From next year though we will have a first rounder (Buss) likely in the best 22.

heck it's cold out today, anyway, had coffee with a certain mate today, some info from the player manager realm:
-Bevo / Bont is a done deal
-Rumors is Butters has quietly 'no thanks' to the Port ''mega'' offer, waiting to see how things plan out, more than likely will stick out his contract at Port unless they see the writing on the wall and try to extract value out of him now as opposed to in a years time, mate still reckons we are his number one destination outside of Port.
-JUH progressing well and as he has heard ''is starting to miss being around the club / players and wants to train again''
-Dogs are still heavily chasing a contracted small forward, either my player manager won't tell me who or he doesn't know himself.
-If Rowell hasn't signed by the end of June, could very well be out the door - to where, he isn't sure, but he does know basically every Victorian club has asked the question.

Other non-Dogs stuff:
-Luke Jackson stuff isn't BS, off field issues, does want to come back to Melbourne
-Allen to Brisbane seems to be the feeling amongst player managers
-Melbourne won't let go of Pickett unless it's a godfather deal
-De Koning to Saints seems to be a done deal
-North threw the warchest at Maynard but wasn't enough to get him out of Collingwood

Bout all I have from our coffee catch up today.

Tom Morris reported today on sen and even Cal Twomey has also said that discussions hasn’t even started between Bont’s management and the club about an extension.

Yeah I heard that as well this morning.
Conflicting info is what it is, he isn't Bont's player manager so he only goes off info he gets from talking to others in the industry, although he was fairly adament that 'Bevo and Bont are done deals' in his words.
