Hear me out: Is Bont really worth the asking price for us at this point in time? His peak was 2021 and he's now been overtaken by Richards and arguably Freijah. Is it good list management to pay 1.5m for your third best mid? Don't get me wrong, he's still very good, but I'd be telling him the contract is more along the lines of 750k a year for 3 years plus incentives and maybe a Captain's allowance.
There is no alternate universe where Bont is worth roughly half of what LDU is getting paid.

If we give Bont a massive paycut just after the salary cap went up by 40% and make 100+ players around the comp better paid than he is, we should be deregistered.

Has there been an actual quote from JUH about his intentions?

If not, whoever in the media continues to speculate can GAGF.

I did see a clip of JUH training and Morris said 'this is not about the Western Bulldogs.'

No, we're just the club that recruited and pays him. McClure and Morris the classic media nepo babies. Nothing between the ears.

So, here is what a hypothetical end of season MIGHT look like.

We need to make at least 5 list changes, so retirement / delistings come from (assuming Libba, Treloar, Sellwood are extended) - but NOT all of them perhaps only 5:
Duryea, Scott, Coffield, A. Jones, L. Jones, Poulter, JJ, VDM, Baker. I reckon Duryea, Scott and Coffield are near certainties.

1. Trade JUH to Shitney for 6 and F1 (say pick 10). This values JUH at the points equivalent of pick 1 minus a little. Feel free to argue if that is over / under.

2. Trade 6, Syd F1 and 12 to PA for Butters and pick 22, 40, and 56. This values Butters at the points equivalent of pick 1 plus a little. Feel free to argue if that is over / under. Using Tim Kelly trade as the benchmark. Given PA don't have a 1st round this year and have list holes all over the place, this is a good deal. If they trade Bergman then their draft hand is going to be awesome (i.e. 2024 Tigers).

3. We then have picks 22, 30, 40, 56, 66. Picks 56 and 66 will come in given academy / FS bids.

4. Trade our F2 for whoever this mysterious small forward is that we keeping hearing about.

5. We have picks for enough points to match a Darcy bid as high as pick 9 (unlikely that high right now). More likely it will leaves us a pick in the late 30s / early 40s.

6. Weightman back on to the active list using a junk pick at the end (assuming we need to do that).

7. So we give up JUH, get Butters, small forward, Will Darcy, pick in the 40s. Then we take a rookie (upgrading an existing rookie if needed - say JOD) if we need to / there are any other retirements / delistings and not a main draft pick.

Given our 2024 draft, mid season draft and something like the above we will have done a significant list rebuild on the run. We also keep our F1.

I am assuming you will all pile on where I have made an error / missed something.

Two firsts for Jamarra is never happening, we won't even get one.

So what about Rowell and Bergman? A future fourth rounder for both?

If we don’t get a decent enough draft haul, why can’t we just keep him for another 12 months?

It’s a contract year next season and you’d be surprised how professional some players become when life changing money is on the line. Once he’s proven he can still perform at an elite level and back it up consistently, there’ll be no shortage of interest.

Imagine a few years ago being told we’d only get a couple of picks in the 20s for both Marra and Baz.

if they hit their potential, I’ve got no doubt they’re among the best handful of players in the competition.
.

I'd trade JHU if we got a top 10 pick for him and it could be used to get Butters or Rowell (or Bergman with extras). Otherwise I think we'd be better off keeping him and hoping he turns it around.

That said, it's basically our MO to trade away players who are difficult.

So we are death riding sydney in this situation?

The worse they go, the more desperate they will be to get him at the end of the year for a good news diversion from their shit year. And they have a track record of poaching star forwards, and paying for them, which they would have to do because he is contracted.

Look, I dont mind it. It's reportedly not a great draft year, but we are looking to trade for players ourselves, so more ammunition for that.

Would anybody mind losing JUH if it helped us get butters?

If it weren't for his injury history he'd be right at the top of my list for a Doc replacement unfortunately he hasn't lived up to those hights he was hinting at early days.
Bit of Coffield about him for me

Could be good if the body holds up but as we’ve seen with Coffield rarely players do

Not wanting to pile on but surely nobody still expects VDM to be in delisting territory at this point?
