Some harsh calls on bus here.

All I ask is half a dozen games in the seniors to see what he's got?

And if not, another 1st round failure from the drafting team 😭
If they thought he was a dud they would trade him for whatever they could get. Have said they won't consider a trade. He did a decent job on Hogan. Possibly need him to get physically stronger to be better 1v1

Or it could just be strategy to shore up our bargaining position 🤷‍♂️

I wish you were recruiting that year, that would be a great outcome considering how bad the draft was. I wanted Josh Weddle and Brayden George.

Seth Campbell lasting till the rookie draft was a strange one too considering he had some great late season form from memory. I think weltschmerz was pretty keen on him?

Yeah, really liked his pace and goal sense.

Buss was rated top 5 before his shoulder injury, and on all the evidence in front of us, was the right pick. Since then Weddle has been fantastic and definitely risen way up the rankings, but it would have taken supernatural foresight to know that at the time, like with drafting Smith over Butters.

Dogs traded out of the first round that year for two picks in the second, Dunkley and Collins.

Thanks, I must have gotten confused that he was expected to be a first rounder, but slid…obviously for good reason

Wait … we drafted Smith ahead of Butters?
😱😱

From what I can remember Harry Lemmey was a top 5 pick pre champs (possible No 1) and went at pick 47. Scully was supposed to be a top 10 pick and went at pick 53. Not many early predictions were correct. I understood the pick, but I didn't agree with the more footage I watched. Weddle to me, had more high end traits suited to the modern game and he performed very well (was the All Australian full back). Busslinger's athleticism and defensive game concerned me. I didn't think you needed supernatural foresight personally. Smith over Butters would have been supernatural foresight.

In any case, it's all a bit of fun. I've got plenty wrong. Scharenberg over Bont, Oscar McDonald over Caleb Daniel etc. I didn't want Naughton because of his kicking action and we had too many tall defenders lol. I need to brag when I get something right.

Yeap, it's funny what some recruiters see, and others don't.

I wanted Daniel Curtin, I thought he was the best player in the draft, bar Harley Reid. Said the club should pick him over Watson and Sanders. Well now I think he is the best players from that draft full stop. Bont like ability. Initially most had him at 3 yet for some reason he slid to Adelaide at 7. Crows have a future star, could possibly be the best player in the comp in a few years. These are the picks you need to nail.

Why on earth would we want another key defender? We had heaps of them.

Adams, Cordy, Roberts, Young, Morris and we were about to bring in Jackson Trengove. Best group of key backs in the comp!

Better than number 10 from the dogs??

He is apparently wanting to move into the midfield. I didn't know he had that in him but not sure we'd be an appropriate destination for him if that is the reason for him wanting to move on from Brisbane. Then yeah - concussion issues as well are a concern.

Just do what Collingwood did with Perryman. Promise midfield time and then shift him back to defense (where they are better suited) as soon as you get him across

Haha yeah it sounds good in theory but I don't imagine Perryman thought Collingwood had the midfield in the depth that we do so he may have felt he was a chance. Not many saw this version of Steele Sidebottom coming.

I do agree with the idea of grabbing Starcevich as a defender though, would be ideal.

Every single recruiter would have taken Smith ahead of Butters.
I would love to see if we received any trade offers on draft night. He was considered top 5 in many circles, but publicly declaring he wouldn't move interstate due to mental health saw him drop.

Anyone have any info on who we had next on our draft board? Interest in trading up to get him would have been high - imagine we walked away with Butters and a future first lol

Caldwell iirc.

IIRC we were pretty set on whichever player fell to us out of Smith or Ben King and Caldwell was plan C.

We loved Rozee but didn't think he'd fall to us.
