We're looking to VFL sides for key backs.

When our VFL side finished on top, we're looking to a VFL side that missed the eight.

Grim.
The bloke who we are apparently chasing with a deal north of $1mil/year was plucked out of a state league at 22 years of age in the rookie draft.

Im not saying there's a high chance of success but it's foolish to dismiss the VFL entirely as a potential source to fix our problem.

Yes it's grim because we have ignored the need for KPDs for years, hoping to trade in late-career players on the fringes at other clubs. They've been good for a year or two (eg Keath, Jones, Trengove) but that should only be to keep us ticking over while we draft younger KPDs and develop them. We stopped doing that after Naughton (2017 and he was promptly moved out of defence) and didn't draft another until things were getting desperate in 2022 (Busslinger). JOD didn't come via the draft - he happily fell into our lap. Both he and Busslinger offer some hope for the future but they can't be the mainstays yet.

We may boast about how good we are at drafting and list management but this is a pretty fundamental list management failing whichever way you look at it.

There's nothing wrong with VFL (or other state league) key backs. Some of the best in the comp (eg Wilkie) used that pathway to get to an AFL side because they typically get overlooked in their u18 draft year and only start showing form in their early twenties. That's what Eyers has done.

As you say looking at a KPD from a VFL side that finished 16th (7-11) is a bit grim. Perhaps we could steal a KPD from the VFL minor premiers instead? If all of Power's off-season KPD targets fall through and Liam Jones leaves us we may end up being grateful for that inexplicable 3 year extension to Gardy's contract.

It should never have got to this stage.

To be fair, Wilkie was taken prior to the MSD as a pathway for state league talent.
It's why at the end of the year it's now harder to find mature talent.

If that was me, I would not post anything to socials, walk into that room with my tail between my legs and beg for my career. But hey, the younger generation are a different breed.

He's very lucky his contract hasn't been torn up already.

We've not only had very short tenures from the KPDs we've traded in (Hamling, Trengove, Keath, Jones) but it probably also hasn't helped also that all of the defenders who have been drafted in the first 2 rounds haven't worked out as mainstays down back for various reasons. That's Kieran Collins and Marcus Adams in 2015, Naughton in 2017, and Busslinger in 2022.

It's well past time to get busy.

Or we could look at it from the viewpoint that the ball would have been down his end a hell of a lot so he would have been exposed to the role a lot more than other KPDs so we stand to benefit from this accelerated development.

What exactly is getting managed in this meeting? Are they spending an hour reviewing the hot up and coming nightclub list for 2026?

Ridiculous having a management meeting when the guy can’t get out of bed and find his way to his place of employment…

Cooked us in the hawks final last year for a start
There was 12 shit players on that day
Not sure how Marra made Bailey Dale and Bailey Williams fumble the footy in Hawks forward 50

Why english got towered in the ruck
Why do many other players missed goals

But k cool

I’ve always been of the opinion, that we have nothing to lose by keeping Marra on the list next year, if he does turn it around & can commit from pre-season, he’ll be a huge inclusion.

And would mean we could play Croft down back / wing / ruck.
