The one thing I can’t understand in all this: why trade Sweet.
Offered him a contract. So did Port as first ruck. Then they recruited Soldo. He was poor, Sweet became first ruck. Port are still bog ordinary

Tim’s last 5 games as a collective have been horrendous. 4/5 times he been completely destroyed (Grundy, O Brien, Meek and Xerri). His only reasonable effort was against Gawn.

He should have been traded/let go. Never overpay for rucks. Lions won a flag with Darcy Fort as the number 1 ruck.
Don’t disagree with what you’re saying about Tim, but disagree with the Brisbane part. Getting to the grand final is just as hard as winning it, the big O was unbelievable in the ruck for the season.

If Fort plays the whole year as #1 ruck I’m sure Brisbane wouldn’t have won the flag.

Sweet was getting flogged by VFL ruckman hence we weren't jumping through hoops to re sign him.
I think his final year with us he was actually pretty good in the VFL, but there was one year where a lot of people around here were desperate for him to play while he was getting touched up by Peter Ladhams types in the VFL

Jay Clark on first crack saying the dogs will keep JUH and not allow it to become a fire sale.

Jordan De Goey and Clayton Oliver good examples of players who were kept despite their issues.
Good. Nothing pisses me off more than us letting go of ''troubled'' players for them to go rip it up elsewhere.

Felt like he was saying we laid down for the cats in the Smith trade. They weren’t going to pay more though. And I’m sure I can pull a quote from him saying “it’s a first round pick” or something similar.

The thing with Darcy I found interesting was during an interview with him, last year I believe, he was asked what position he sees himself in X amount of years down the line in his prime. Without much hesitation he said the ruck, which I always found fascinating for a guy who seems such a natural and already successful forward. Maybe its the following in his dad's footsteps or he may have changed his mind now, but he seeing himself as a ruck when he develops is definitely something.

He would obviously be a star in either position, but it's one to watch as his career progresses for sure.

Its an interseting one. Hes a great deep forward, could be one of the best. He might average 3-4 goals as a deep forward.
But hes reliant on his team mates down there and spends a lot of time not in the vicinity of the ball. Put him in the ruck and he is marking up and down the ground, improving our stoppages, and probably still kicking a goal or two a game.

English hangs his hat on being mobile and good at linking up around the ground, but IMO darce is already ahead of him there.

I expect we might see Sam swapping with Tim for a greater percentage of each game, particularly if Tim is struggling.

I think he said Smith made it difficult because he only wanted to go to one club.

Not sure if Oliver is a great example, or it could be the perfect example. Melbourne were trying to get him out but couldn’t get anything substantial back. If any team offered a decent deal he’d be gone but they were too wary of his off field problems.

He was always only wanting to go to one club. That's how it works. That's how it was engineered.

I had no idea Baker even existed until recently.

Be interesting to see how long we persist with Lachie Smith. I know ruckmen are often slow maturing types but if English goes down, is he our immediate replacement? Is he even ready? Or are we going down the route of taking Darcy out of the forward line to ruck for us? Lobb surely has to stay down back, with JUH a non-starter then who replaces Darcy up forward? Naughton can’t be the only tall down there.

That was a rabbit hole I didn’t foresee myself going down.

If you’re an opposition coach you would be much happier with Darcy in the ruck than Darcy up forward. Especially with all the uncertainty around JUH.

Sadly you are right though. Darcy already is more competitive than Tim in the ruck.

Tim should have been moved to a club crying out for a 2nd ruck/forward. He worked that role well when it was Naughton/Bruce as the KPFs in 2021.
Joel Freijah was more competitive than Tim

Joel Freijah was more competitive than Tim
Xerri did not win one effective tap against Freijah as far as I could see.

It's got nothing to do with size & ability and all to do with positioning. The positioning that English uses is diabolical. The best rucks in the league would struggle to win hit outs with the starting position he chooses each boundary or around the ground ball up.

Darcy has everything in his kit to be the most unstoppable forward in the league

There would be 17 teams in the league hoping we move him to first ruck. He should never spend less than 70% of the time up front

I think the equation is pretty simple on a game by game basis - if we are getting the ball down to darce in a good way, and hes marking it and kicking them, then you leave him down there.

If we're struggling in the ruck / transitioning the ball from defence into attack, then you move your best players into the action to fix the problem.
