Correct.But it's still a chance, right...?![]()
(Not trying to be smart here dw, but by "history" do you mean accomplished players coming to us specifically?)
How many elite players in their prime at another club have we targeted and landed?
I can think of maybe one ... Tom Boyd (and it's debatable he was in the "elite" category when we got him, but he was a #1 draft pick so on that basis I'm happy not to dispute it). You could also argue Boyd was a special case because of the post-MacCartney chaos but yes, we did land him.
Don't suggest any of the following, even though they were/are good acquisitions:
Barry Hall - well into his 30s
Akermanis - slightly damaged goods (d'head behaviour) and 30+
Adam Treloar - not even targeted, just fell into our lap, Bradburyesque
Josh Bruce (late career, not"elite")
Rory Lobb (in his 30s)
Matthew Kennedy (Carlton told him to "explore his options")
And a long list of useful gets like Suckling, Liam Jones, Crozier, Cloke, Crameri, Schache, Duryea, Hannan, Harmes, etc.
I'm talking about elite players in their prime (like 22-26 years old). Butters is 24.
I may have overlooked some acquisitions so I'm happy to be corrected, but as far as I can see when we talk about top 10 players at the club it's usually been traffic the other way. We are not bad at picking up "moneyball" type options but rarely, if ever, elite talent in their prime.
That said, I would be as overjoyed as anyone if we landed Butters. I just think it's improbable based on history.
