Thats all well and good in the imaginary binary world of bigfooty list managers.

Until a player decides he wants out and then a clubs leverage evaporates before its very eyes.

Determined players tend to get to where they they want to go. And their former clubs tend to get it in the arse.

Let’s not forget we held Dunkley to his contract for two years after he first requested a trade - after Essendon’s offer was deemed unacceptable.

The other thing is we have no one of value who would want to go to the saints
Yes we're a year or three too late. Could've sent Macrae, Zordy and even Daniel if we'd done it earlier.

That's if we'd actually accepted the fact that KPD was an area of dire need.

Something like pick 10 + F2 might be enough.
Im not sure that even Sam Power could maintain a poker face as he slid that offer across the table.

Thats true. But it seems to be becoming increasingly more evident that when a player really wants out that he can get to the club of his choice. The Dunkley trade to Essendon always felt more aspirational than determined to me. That he didn't crack the shits and then left for somewhere else entirely when his contract expired seems to prove that point.

They are practically worthless from a clubs point of view.

When a player can walk away with years left on a contract that the club may've built their 5 or more years of list strategy around.
You mean like how Oliver and Petracca walked away last year? I remember when that happened. Darned player contracts.

Or do you mean Adam Treloar and Brodie Grundy being dumped whilst contracted? "Worthless from a clubs point of view."

Spot on,

They go through swings and round abouts,

Like I said before their value is in how much trade capital you can get Baz had no contract we got screwed Dunkley had no contract for Brisbane we got screwed

The above is why any deal would be very difficult, assuming Cal wants to go (which has never been stated).

You don't get an AA full back for one or two speculative draft picks. Got to give, to get.

IF the dogs are serious about fixing their biggest weakness, there would need to be a quality player in return that is excess to the dogs and required by St Kilda, ideally.
As clubs can’t trade players without their consent, it makes it virtually impossible to include quality players in trades.

Couple of bits:

Buku to Carlton definitely happening.

Steven May has parted ways with Melbourne ... have a feeling you're involved ;)

Edmund has historically been the mouthpiece the club has used when it wants to get information to the public.

It's clearly true (they wouldn't just make it up). The fact that Wilkie is taking the phone call suggests he is actually thinking about it. I think when push comes to shove he'll decide to stay with a better contract at the Saints but it's not dead in the water.
This is true re Edmund. Lives a couple of doors down from my sister and he gets good intel on dogs.

I REALLY want Wilkie. With how tough it will be to get him out of St. Kilda, i'm nervous we get shut down right at the end of trade period and miss out on Butts also as a result. As others have said, i'm happy to go after both for the added depth and we should easily have the salary space, but seems our attention is on Wilkie currently with Butts the backup option.

We can easily get both Buku will net either 2nd rounder this year or next trade that + pick 10 for Wilkie then use our 2nd + F2 for Butts

I think we are after both with one being realistic
