Lewis signed. Will happily eat my words but this seems like such a low upside decision

Mail or gut feel ?Sanders will be a Dog for life![]()
Considering he played forward in the one chance at AFL level, I highly doubt we see him as a key defender.Unless we've got some kind of expectation of him being a decent key defender, i can't see any point of this signing
No current season stats available
We didn't have him play Friday and didn't have Darcy play and looked more then fine he's at a minimum already behind Darcy/Naughts/Croft/EmmettDarcy, Naughton or Croft goes down with injury - what is the plan? Buku looks to be extremely important down back, and we hardly have the KPD depth to move Lobb.
So who fills the void? Because we literally have no KPF depth as it stands. Well, now we do, because we've recruited our best key forward from our VFL side. He was the 8th highest goalkicker at VFL level last year despite being thrown into defence on occasion, and knows our system.
You can't always buy the lottery tickets, sometimes you need the lower ceiling player to maintain continuity in our side in the event of injury. We needed KPF depth, and we got it. He isn't our superstar power forward. He's our Jack Redpath - there to maintain structure and play his role if called upon.
Sanders would already be a Crow if you let Keane go last year. I'd be surprised if he sticks around. Especially if we bring in ButtersMail or gut feel ?
Play 2 KPFs if one of them goes down. Gardiner, as limited as he is, can pinch hit in the ruck and play as a warm body Emmett is developing, Kennedy or Bont can play as marking types during a game, Hynes is good overhead and a good size, Davison can play a HF leading role.Darcy, Naughton or Croft goes down with injury - what is the plan? I’d rather run the 2 key forwards or wait until Weightman comes back or even pull buku forward and bring in gardiner or Busslinger personally. Don’t think we are light on for key forward power at allWho were the options on the list to keep our structure intact if Naughton or Darcy were injured again?
Croft is already in the side and part of that structure.
The new draftee Emmett? Ryan Gardner? Pulling Khamis or Lobb from defence?
KPF depth seemed one of our most obvious needs to me. Hopefully we don’t need to use him, but would hate to lose one of our forward half talls for a stretch and be relying on an 18 year old or a defender doing a makeshift stint up forward.

Walker also kicked a couple of bags in the VFL finals last yearPlay 2 KPFs if one of them goes down. Lewis looks like he's good as a deep forward at VFL level but I really don't understand this decision, unless Darcy's body is much worse then we have been letting on in which case we're in trouble anyway
Mail, he has no interest in leaving the Dogs.Mail or gut feel ?

Emmett was much better then Lewis last week and we only played 2 KPF on Friday and looked good
Obviously it’s very unlikely, but at least conceptually you could have a wink-wink agreement with Lewis that he’ll “retire” from AFL (but keep playing VFL) just before the MSD if asked to do so.Why didn't we just keep the open list spot? Baffling call.
That would go against a few people on hereMail, he has no interest in leaving the Dogs.
I'd happily sign him long term. He's on a real upward trajectory and is a pro off fieldMail, he has no interest in leaving the Dogs.
CorrectHoping for the best case scenario isn’t a list strategy.

What you are talking is 2-3 KPF injuries and if they are 1 of if not both of Darcy/Naughton our forwardline will be drastically different anywayThis boils down to planning for a potential injury to a KPF by:
A: Leaving a list spot open so we have no option other than use untried teenagers, or mid-season we either repurpose defenders or midfielders or change the structure of our forward line.
OR
B: Adding one of the best mature VFL KPFs to our last list spot.
It’s a pretty obvious choice to me.
