Who knew that the Bulldogs making a play for Cal Wilkie would have knock on effects across St.Kildas list management?

Aleer is pretty ordinary and not worth the pursuit. But as it stands St.Kilda walking away from a player they have spent months pursuing. Is a pretty shitty way of doing business.

Yeah I know, I did say insurance, so he'd be primarily a VFL player and only playing if we had injuries in the backline.

I'm not in love with the idea. I'm just thinking about how our VFL team will look in 2026 if we assume 2 of Busslinger, Sellwood and Walker are in the 1s.

Gardner and Coffield as KPD depth would be an interesting choice.

I’d be surprised if we didn’t have someone else join.

Not saying Frost would solve anything but he’d be instantly ahead of those two for mine.

They're no worse than Sam Frost or any of the others likely candidates left in the race.

I see no point at all in going down the recruiting a tall just for the sake of their tallness.

We've been down this road too many times and it always ends in a cul-de-sac.

Id rather we recruited a raw tall out of the draft or state leagues and put games into the likes of Croft and Walker.

Re Leek Aleer

Have they found out something? Similar to offering two top ten picks for JUH last year and then withdrawing after doing their due diligence?

Not to cast aspersions on Aleer, but having him 99% over the line with a contract offer to make him walk out of the club, then just abandon him seems like a move that would have no-one trusting them with a contract offer again - unless - they can justify it by saying they've uncovered something untoward.

Id be keen on Aleer but not for the price Saints we're paying. It's remarkably crappy dealing to get a player to nominate your club and turn away other potential suiters aswell as burn bridges at their current club before pulling out at the 11th hours. Im principle deals had already been done with the Giants aswell.

To me it has to be a play for SDK. Once Marshall nominated the Cats they were very keen on uniting the two DeKonings but it relied on Steele moving off of the books. Steele refusing to entertain the thought put a stop to that plan.

A salary cap squeeze is already in motion. It's started by paying the biggest contract in history to retain a player that they themselves drafted (where most players stay on for a discount), exasperated by a having to increase the salary of a player that was already in contract, followed by a failure to move on two club legends who did the hard yarns when they were crap, now they're failing to a player that everyone including player managers and list managers (where relationships are important) is going to fail to get done.

I don't actually think it's all that bad that the Saints are swinging for the fences - as a poor Docklands team they have to try something - but it is glorious to see how it will all blow up.
