Don’t think saints would get any favours with Leek Aleer management company in the future . doesn’t matter what anyone thinks of Aleer as a player but no deserves that crap.

Had the same thought then looked up the player agent. One of the only other AFL players they have is Wade Derksen, not a great week for that agent!

Depending on salary and trade price, and assuming there's nothing untoward that the Saints have uncovered, I agree.

If not one other option pops up, we cannot have Gardiner essentially as our only ready to go depth.

If we roll the dice not getting another key defender this off-season, we know luck will dictate next year as the season when two of Lobb/JOD/Buss will be injured at the same time.

Aleer had a very poor game against us (which I think a lot of people are judging him on), but I don't think he's the terrible option some are making him out to be. I mean, it's a worry when your highlights packages actually includes some poor moments/decisions lol, but he's got plenty to work with.

It’s a good point. He can’t be judged by that game against us late in the season. GWS were extremely poor all across the ground.

Not sure if we are even linked or interested, but I’d hope we are having a look. He does seem like the aggressive “jump at the ball” type of player that Bevo seems to rate.

Exactly, I highly doubt this is a coincidence. I don't think these clubs pull the same shenanigans with guys from bigger agencies.

I think it would be silly not to go after Aleer, he might not be perfect, but he is better than nobody. I think he has potential to be great if he fixes up his disposal and decision making and at worst he is a younger more athletic Gardener.

Plus it would be extremely funny if he became elite next year.

Disposal and decison making isn't his issue,

Defending is Naughton had to do very little to put him off balance and destroy him

My only knock on sanders is he doesn't have that do or die effort in the contest which he was supposedly drafted for. He is meant to be the libba replacement, yes he can get the ball, but sometimes there is no desperation scrapping in close. But, he is still a kid, so I don't know whether letting him go is the right move, depends what you get for him.
Competitiveness is hard to teach. Not sure this will change much.

KPDs with better 1v1 loss % (contesting at least 1.5 defensive 1v1s per game) than any of our KPDs that were out of contract at some stage this season:
  • Zaine Cordy
  • Oscar McDonald
  • Zach Reid
  • Jack Silvagni
  • Darcy Gardiner
  • Sam De Koning
  • Joel Hamling
  • Oscar Adams
  • Tom McDonald
  • Sam Collins
  • Tylar Young
  • Toby Pink
The list gets way larger if you include players that re-signed last year.

If we truly didn't have confidence that JOD/Buss were the future, we needed to go harder earlier. There were options, whether they be short-term fill-ins or set and forget guys for the longer term.

There is zero point now scrambling for scraps. We just have to hope the club actually does have faith in what we do have.

If we can't find any decent key defenders can we reach out to Liam Jones again.

The trading of Jamarra is a big step in the right direction of improving our club culture. We are a much better place without the likes of Smith, JUH, Hunter and Stringer. Sure, on the surface, we are worst off for on field talent but having a much better culture is worth more for the club and overall performance.

Essendon did it with Dunkley who had Pickering as his agent
It was picks that were the issue with Dunkley (hindsight suggests Essendon wasted those picks anyway).

Aleer is a cap issue. Nobody will take Steele so now that can't afford Aleer. Especially since they had to pay up to keep Wilkie.

It's horrible to woo a guy then just pull the rug at the last minute.

So the general consensus is that Leek is not the answer. Not related, but that reminds me of a sign I saw outside a pub earlier this year on my travels.

Alcohol is NOT the Answer
Alcohol IS the Question
The Answer is YES!
I watched him this year and he may have the worst one on one win rate of any player who is taller than Caleb.

He looks great but I just didn't rate his defensive ability.
