Exactly, I wouldn't say he is the big defender we need... Though, he might for other roles for the right price
North are looking at him as they're in the market for a 3rd tall/interceptor. All of Croft/Buss/JOD/Lobb are capable of that role to varying degrees (I'd have JOD and Lobb clearly above, Buss slightly ahead and Croft below him). I think its a true lockdown defender or pass at this point.

So you're all over all the ways in which we're failures, but do you have a suggestion to fix it? We can't make a 25-year-old full back in his prime choose to come to us.
It's in my post that you quoted. But if it needs to be stated more explicitly:
  • Recognise that KPDs take time to mature. Probably as long as ruckmen do.
  • Draft a likely looking KPD every few years so there's always one coming along. Can be a CTL player or an emerging state league senior.
  • Circumstances are always changing. You might lose one. Or gain one. Reassess every year where your KPD stocks are going to be in 2, 4 and 6 years time. Adjust your KPD recruitment strategy accordingly.
It's pretty basic stuff and I'd have assumed that every list management team in the AFL does it. Except that there's not much evidence ours has.

yes but a lot more athletic than them both... if we structure the ground better with a new system and slow the ball getting in I think his attributes would benefit our backline eventually
Eventually I agree. However, one thing he is though skinny, is aggressive at the contest. Would actually develop him at both ends at the moment. He will learn from opposition defenders as a forward and Vis Versa. Key is play him and to be injury free to build more of a base over summer

I think Croft would be great for our bakline aswell but as you say, eventually is the key word there.
At this point of his development he is capable playing third tall forward in the ones and that is where we should keep him to fast track that development.

In all honesty given choices available, if no one offers Jones a position and he wants to play, Rookie him and give him a development role. Even where he is now with age and injuries he is still better than some of the options being put up by a margin

I'd certainly prefer him over Frost, May and McGovern in current forms.

Croft isn't what we need skinnier then JOD and Buss
Fine - send Naughton back then (and cue the general pile on….). We could completely repurpose and send Bont to CHF, Darcy and Croft up front and then Naughton down back.

What we don’t need is what we did in 2025. I can’t see any new blood coming to help in 2026 so it’s going to have to come from within.

So take out our highest goal kicker replace him with our best midfielder and isolate Darcy

id have frost as a backup... at worst he costs you nothing... from the bits I have seen of him he is at least physical and has a crack
But he does cost something.
He costs a list spot which are at a premium, as it is we will more than likely have to delist some players to bring in draft picks this year.
at the moment I believe we have 2 list spots available?
Marras spot will be taken by Budarick and Khamis is no certainty to be traded.

Every chance we only take two picks in the draft and upgrade JOD as our third mandatory list change.

We have already delisted Scott/Jones/Duryea(retired)

JJ likely gone now as will Poulter and Coffield

I don't understand the interest in pick 6 either, I'd rather keep our first and use our other assets that would be required to get up to 6 to either get our second pick higher or move into next year.
Maybe Marra, 33, and Buku pick for Budarick and 18.

Edit - unless we can do Khamis and 33 for 22, which is looking more likely

MSD go onto the rookie list
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Sellwood take Duryea's spot already
Walker borrowed Weightmans spot and occupies a rookie spot next year which Duryea clears for him. Sellwood filled a rookie we left open after last years draft.

How anyone can be certain of this is beyond me. Given what we know of talls and given he's never done a full AFL pre-season, it makes no sense that he won't show signs of improvement.
I for one think he will improve tactically, I guess people would like to see a touch more physicality and desperation in his game
