I know we're entering the silly season, but I think I've got a trade scenario that might really improve the list. It's a two-parter...

Part 1
Pick 17 (Geelong) - James Kelly (Carlton)

Part 2

Nick Stevens (Collingwood) - Pick 11 (or whatever their first rounder ends up being.)

This would give us 1,11,19,35,51,67, PSD Pick 1 and James Kelly.

Collingwood wont give us pick 11, like the idea of kelly, but i think Geelong would want someone like Fisher for Kelly.

I think they would, but fair enough. Someone in the first 16 picks would do a deal to get Stevens.

Kelly's value is around 17 in this draft, whether they would do that deal or not is another thing. Brad Fisher isn't worth nearly as much as James Kelly.

If you could work out the salary cap problems, a straight Stevens for Kelly deal would be pretty fair.

Fisher would be worth alot to a team like Geelong, there leading goal kicker was Ablett with about 30.

I would give Fish more chances too prove himself - needs too kick more accurately clearly, pure and simple.

Although Kelly would be tantalising, I think we must batton down the hatches and just delist players, and use our own draft picks on kids.

I think by using the National draft picks and our first pick in the PSD the club will maintain more credibility and send a cleaer message about its direction.

I am not comparing the skill set of James Kelly too that of Chambers, Longmuir, Johnson, Mott, Saddington etc, but I think we need too learn from this and draft our own kids.

The only recycled player (figure of speach) should come through the PSD.

It's a fair point, but if you work through what moves I'm proposing, in reality I'm suggesting moving out Stevens (26/27), bringing in James Kelly (23-24) and moving slightly down from 17 to a better pick. I just don't think we need Stevens at our club with the way he carries himself on the field.

Melbourne is another possible party willing to depart with a first-rounder for a Stevens-type should it miss out on Aker.

we need stevo at the club... his game day performances isnt all that matters... its his leadership to our young midfielders which has been praised by the young guns themselves. And the fact that he gets tagged every week doesnt help his stats so u gottta take that into consideration

Stevens is contracted for another year at half a million dollars. We kept average footballers lats year who were still contracted so don't waste your keyboard space. The days of paying part-wages for players to play at other clubs are long gone. Fisher offers something alot of other players can't, the ability to take a big, contested grab on the forward line as a 3rd forward. Certainly will not swap him for Kelly. Give Fish a couple of full seasons (no injuries) and he will be extremely valuable and a pr1ck to match-up on. Like Stewie Loewe, he can be taught to kick.

I actually quite like that idea. Basically we lose pick 17 and Stevens, get get James Kelly and pick 11. I think that's a great idea. All we have to do now is convince the board, Collingwood, Geelong, Kelly and Stevens.

I don't think we're in any great position to trade away any talent that we do have on our list (Fisher Stevens Hoops etc), and the players that are tradeable (Sporn Livingston etc) wont attract ANY interest from other clubs.

Just draft kids, delist hacks, hopefully pick up a talent in the PSD.

Leave the silly season to the silly.

i agree totally. eventhough i love that time of year, i think carlton should do everything we can to keep the players at our club who hav talent and definately not risk trading any picks in the top 20.

I have said this a few times:

Nick Stevens skill set will come to fruition when we have players around him too compliment his game style.

The club, Stevens, and the supporters have doen the hard yards, would hate too part now.

Certainly respect the other side of the coin and can see benefits in getting a good deal for him.

agree totally. I can't see us getting involved in trade week too heavily, unless someone like Stevo or Hoops particularly wants to move on AND we can find a club willing to take them, full contract and all.

i don't like the idea of trading away our better players

stevens has not had a great year but he is still a quality player
j kelly has also not had a great year and spent quite a few games in the VFL

is there going to be any real benefit? as IMO we are getting like for like.

2007 stevens should have a better year for the reasons:

-murphy will carry more of the load
-likely to have gibbs, so he will be another option in the midfield
-simpson will continue improving
-walker to spend more time in the midfield
-smith, jackson, carazzo, bantick, blackwell, betts, houlihan are all other midfield options we have, so rotations will be greater and we will stop relying on 1 or 2 to carry the load

i don't thaink any carlton supporter doubts stevens ability and many are frustrated with him as we all want him to step up and be an elite player, which he can be

stevens need players to give him a chop out
just like our fwd line needs more options, we have to stop relying on 1 or 2 to do all the work.

stevens is a quality player, he is not perfect, that is why the oppossition target him and have players sit on him the whole game as he can hurt other teams, that is why he need more support.
