What's our youth policy? In that I mean do we only trade or pick up delistments that are under a specific age?

I think we need to pick up some instant forward power. The Richmond game made me realise how important Matty Lappin actually was to us. When the big guys wern't getting it done he shined, and would kick in bursts to get us back into games.

Why didn't we recruit Schneider Man from Sydney? Was going fairly cheap.

Our most major worries right now are:

1. Key defender - easily our most needed position to fill right at the minute. Where is it going to come from? Looking at our list, we only have Austin to develop into such a role and he is a fair way off and no certainty to make it by any means.

2. Forwards - Right now, we have close to no forward line depth. Fev is a star but is inconsistent, Fisher is very good but injury prone. Then we have Edwards who looks promising. Hartlett no certainty to make it. Resting ruckman just that - not going to be in the forward line permanently (Cloke, Kreuzer).

3. Inside midfielder - Right now we have 2 in Adam Bentick and Richard Hadley. Both coming back from injury, Hadley a little more advanced in that sense because he's already playing seniors. Both are good valuable players but ideally we would like to find an upgrade.

Now, how do we solve these problems?

Problem 1: Tall defenders - As I previously stated, Austin is the hope. Saddington is the other but he is well past his best and cannot be expected to hold a spot. Austin not ready yet so really needs to push through the Ants this year. Hartlett more suited up forward. We need to look at trading for a key defender. Target guys that haven't been given much opportunity at their current clubs and that will be ready straight away.

Problem 2: Forwards - We really need 2 forwards, 1 tall and 1 medium/small. The tall would be Hartlett but he's going to have to work extra hard for his spot now. We have FF covered (Fevola), one forward pocket (Edwards) and one half forward flank (Fisher). 3 spots remain. Eddie is still our best option for the other pocket until we develop another goal sneak (possibly Ellard). That leaves CHF and the other HF flank. Waite is the obvious choice for CHF but that leaves yet another gaping hole down back, which highlights the importance of Hartlett's development. For the other flank, in my mind we have a few options:
1) Ryan Houlihan - is the obvious choice. Silky skills really stand out when up forward, creative player who knows how to find the goals.
2) Bryce Gibbs - I have no doubt that Gibbs is ready, physically and mentally, to become a full time AFL midfielder, but I think he is better suited on a half forward flank. Can venture into the middle but can also provide a target as a link man to the forwards. We often fall down accross half forward so we need someone that has the ability to kick the ball a long way with precision to not only target the forwards but kick it over their heads too.
3) Simon Wiggins - One from left field. I've been calling for this to happen for a long time but I don't think it will happen unfortunately. Not a great player but for his size has fantastic strong hands and will contest for the ball every single time.

Problem 3: Inside midfielders - is the least worrying as we have 2 right now, and a couple of others can help out in Murph and Judd. Not so desperate, so we should look to the draft in this instance.

1. defenders - i think we should look at players from clubs with a very settled backline. but not guys who are 26+. guys like nathan bock, sam fisher, maybe even matt maguire. these guys arent number 1 defenders at their club but they can probaby fill that void on our list and free up waite to solve problem 2

3 - inside midfielders - i dont see this as a huge problem. we have guys who arent too bad in that department (bentick, blackwell, hadley). throw in possibly pfieffer ellard who both showed a bit and the guys like stevens, simpson and judd will be laughing

I cant believe how pathetic our backline looked last Thursday its a joke.
Back when Carlton were good we had such a strong backline now we have nothing.
Carlton need to stop recruiting mid fielders and recruit a big time backman
like a Glass or Rutten type of player

i hope the Carlton board and Brett Ratten wake up to this issue because it is so devastatingly obvious that it is our problem

Nathan Bock, Matt Maguire and especially Sam Fisher are all required players for their respective clubs and are absolutely no chance to leave. Fisher is St Kilda's best defender, Bock is Adelaide's 2nd best, and when fit, Maguire is St Kilda's starting CHB and one of the better CHB's in the competition. Not going to happen.

Stevens, Simpson and Ellard aren't inside midfielders. Ellard is no certainty to make it anyway. Judd can't play solely as an inside mid full time. Blackwell will be lucky to stay on the list after this year. We definitely need midfielders to give us first use of the ball and besides Judd we don't have that many of them, hence a need to draft.

Do you honestly not believe that Ratten and the coaching staff are aware of our backline troubles? FFS, its not just us that can see it!

It's all well and good to say we should recruit someone but how do you suggest we go about getting Glass or Rutten? Silly statement. Neither are a chance of coming to Carlton so we need to look at other options.

Think before you post next time...please!?!?!

Correct me if I am wrong but I think West Coast rated Judd and he was a required player and we managed to get him

Have you had a look at how lacking in experience our backline is? How do you think it is going to improve? By playing games together. Jamison, Bower and Grigg have hardly played any games and you want a quick fix?

THe problem on Thursday was we got smashed around the clearances as the game wore on; no defender could have stopped some of the delivery Richo was getting.

The hard ball gets were about 40 to 26, we got beaten in the hitouts to advantage and you are blaming the backline?

We had virtually no ruckmen; Cloke and Setanta have a go but they aren't good enough in the ruck. Judd, Stevens and Hadley were underdone.

Patience

I have patience in our ruckman, i trully beleive that we will have a great combo with hampson and kreuzer in the ruck in the fututre , thats why this key defender is most needed. Its like Judd when he came to Carlton he has and is going to have a huge impact on our midfielders. If we had a KP defender with a bit of experience then is can have that same ripple effect with our other defenders, teaching them new stuff and also relieving some great pressure which than will allow them to play even better.

i didnt mean stevens, simpson, judd or ellard are inside mids. i said that bentick, blackwell, hadley possibly pfiffer and throw in maybe carrazzo are pretty good inside midfielders. i meant that its not a massive problem and if these guys start peforming week in week out stevens, simpson, judd will be laughing because of the service they will be getting.

IMO carrazzo was a bit down last thursday. but judging by his 2007 he is a good inside midfielder.
hadley is only going to improve as the season goes on.
bentick and blackwell i think will be competing for one position and both have had games where they have won their fair share of the ball.
and pfiffer looked pretty good in the NAB cup. looked like he doesnt mind a contest either.
although stevens and simpson dont like winning much of their own ball, you can hardly say judd and marc murphy like sitting outside of the packs so you can sort of conisder them as inside midfielders.

If you think a Judd-like scenario is going to continue to happen then you are deluding yourself. We were very lucky to get Judd but it's not going to be a regular occurrence.

Expecting such a thing to happen again is just being naive.

This is precisely why I had it at number 3. It isn't an urgent problem, but down the track we will need to start thinking about it.

We only have 2 players on our list currently who are capable of playing as full time inside midfielders, Adam Bentick and Richard Hadley. Both are coming back from injury, and whilst both are good players, as I said, ideally we would like to find better players for their roles some time down the track, albeit not urgently.

Carrazzo cannot be considered an inside midfielder and we can't expect him to play that role. Good player, but he's not suited to that role more than a running and accumulating, or even a tagging role.

Murphy and Judd can both play as inside midfielders, in fact I would consider them to be just that, however, only part time. Ideally we would never use them as full time inside midfielders because we would be robbing the team of their other great talents which would just be a waste. That's why we need other options.

Pfeiffer may be an option, but like so many others, I can't see him filling that role full time. For mine, he's far more suited to running off a flank and through the middle. He goes in and goes in hard, but I wouldn't classify him as an inside midfielder that we need.

I reckon we go after this guy. 256cm tall........stand him on the mark in defence and watch them kick from 20 further away to get it over him.:D

If you read the article about this giant bloke it says that his size is attributed to some dodgy soviet era brain surgery gone wrong whereby the part of his brain which controls the release of growth hormone was 'accidentally' damaged in a routine brain tumour operation. I'm reading between the lines and assuming this is the cover story for failed soviet military medical experiment to create giant super soldiers etc.

Point is, maybe we should be thinking long term and get this surgeon to be a bit judicious with the blade on some future F/S picks. A team of 2.5m giants in 15 years time!!!

We had one, but decided that he didnt fit the sterotype footballer of today. Lance could of filled the hole at CHF very easily this year with the amount of football that will be in our forward line. Just because he was slow and couldnt jump doesnt mean he still couldnt play at the highest level.

You need to be able to actually run ...no matter what position you play..that ruled Lance out of the game .

No need to get smart number 1. and 2 i said a glass or rutten type of player not glass or rutten meaning we need a big backman. and we got judd when we never thought it was possible so you just made absolute arse of yourself.

I dont no if this player has been mentioned yet, but im hearing a lot of praise for a guy called Harry Taylor from Geelong, unsure of contract status and i think can play a KP back, it will be hard for this kid to get a gig at geelong whenever Egan comes back. Any chance of us having alook at him?
Also Prismall is out of contract at the end of the year, if this hasn't already been stated.

Harry Taylor was drafted this year and is NO chance to leave Geelong at the end of the year.
