Is it too early to talk about trading playes from other clubs, I am sure that if Ryder had failed against the in form Fraser then we would all be talking about trading for a more experienced ruckmen.

I wouldnt mind getting a hardened body in the line up as most of the past premiership and top teams have had 5 ruckmen on the list.

Look at Hawthorn (2008)
- Simon Taylor in the seniors
- Robert Campbell in the seniors
- Brent Renouf able to play seniors but in reserves helping out the kids
- Max Bailey developing in the reserves, when not injured :p
- Luke Lowden also developing in the reserves beside Bailey and Renouf.

Geelong in 2007 similar position:
- Steven King in the seniors
- Brad Ottens in the seniors
- Mark Blake in the reserves
- Trent West in the reserves
- Shane Mumford in the reserves.

all have had good ruck divisions, and this is one area that I think we need to improve on, obviously the injuries to both Hille and Laycock have hurt us a little bit, but we should still have one ruckmen ready to play AFL and another two developing in the reserves.

Obviously this is getting into trade talk, would anyone look at these posibiliteis.

Brad Moran, 200cm, 99kg, 22y.o, 10 games

Is able to play at either end of the ground and is very good in the air, may need to improve his ruckwork, but a spot on our list would not be lost with his inclusion, am not sure on his contract status, but IMO he would be a very good inclusion onto the EFC list.

Shane Mumford, 200cm, 102kg, 22y.o, 3 games

Am not entirely sure where he is at in terms of his develo[ment but some games this year seem to show that he is improving each game and has shown at times that he is a more than capable ruckmen and a very good link man.

Todd Goldstein, 201cm, 105kg, 20 y.o, 3 games

Kangaroos big man who showed plenty in his few games he played last year, great tap work, but a bigger engine for this rapidly improving big man may be the difference between a good big man, and a great big man.

Daniel Currie, 200cm, 97kg, 20 y.o, 0 games

A really good pre season from the swannies big man, showed plenty in the pre season and was a battle betwen him and Jesse White, White has now grabbed his chance and is playing good footy, the inclusion of Candian Mike Pyke also put Currie back a peg in the ruck division too IMO.

am just putting the question out there, and the possibilities too. any feedback would be great. thanks.

I would agree to an extent with you, if there was no uncomprimised draft looming.

Bellchambers will be ok I think, and when Laycock gets back on the park, we will be ok. It would be nice to have another "class" ruckmen. However none of those you listed are that. We have to stop looking for quick fixes. as quick fixes put us further back.

If a decent ruckmen came out of contract or was up for trade i would be interested, however i still believe that we go to this draft, take the best kid available with the first pick and then get what we need after that. We need another ruckmen, so i assume we will go shopping for one at seasons end. either draft or trade. But most likely draft as picks are worth double this year.

I just dont think we put so much pressure on the young kids, Bellchambers is not ready (yet) and Ryder (IMO) can only do so much, if only Laycock was playing, it would be so much better.

If we traded a player, he would be able to help develop the kids at Bendigo as well as coming into the seniors when required. Thus the examples of Geelong and Hawthorn.

No-one will be trading this year and fair enough too. It could be the last chance for clubs to get decent picks for a number of years.

Essendon 2009 if all were fit
- Hille
- Laycock
- Ryder
- Bellchambers
- Bock

The Laycock injury is whats killing us atm.

Just putting in out there.....Charman. He is a little out of favour due to form and injury at Brisbane and might just be what essendon need, a mature aged ruckman to work with hill and develop bock and belle chambers

No thanks next, would cost too much as well.

We won't trade for a ruckman simply because with Hille and Laycock fit and if Ryder develops there (and maybe forward too) then we have three mature ruckmen by 2010 (well, Ryder will be reasonably developed with another preseason). That and we have Bellchambers and Bock, we may add another ruckman at the end of this year and that would give us six potential choices (even if Bock and our next ruck draftee weren't physically ready immediately).

And you mention most of the past premiership and top teams have had five ruckmen on the list, but given that we aren't close to a premiership why would we trade for one and pay over the price when we can just draft and develop another one? A flag is a long way in the distance so we have plenty of time to develop our ruck stocks.

no love for a triple premiership ruckman? I guess that rules out Cox, Sandilands, McIntosh, Gardiner and Petrie I guess. If Charman was available I would grab it with both hands, a very good ruckman/forward back-up for Hille, and Brizzy get a replacement in Laycock anyway

For the record Charman only got the one premiership medal.

Also, with Brisbane in an equal if not worse ruck position as you guys I doubt Charman would be on the market unless 1) We got exceptional value (The K. Tippett for Charman proposed deal from last year) or 2) We had already traded for a serviceable mature ruckman (Seaby or Similar).

what would you be willing to offer for him??

would a straight swap for Monfries be too much to ask??
perhaps Jay Nash included in a deal....

Firstly as already mentioned we have 5 rucks on the list it just so happens that our 2 most experienced are on the LTI. Why trade in another pnly to have him in the Seaby scenario of wanting to leave for further opportunity as Hille, Laycock and Ryder will have a purchase on the 2 spots as long as the 3 are fit.

Secondly Geelong and Hawthorn had far more than 5 ruckmen to win them a premiership. Geelong have the ABC midfield that is arguaably the best midfield assembled ahead of even Brisbanes fab 4 and West Coasts bad boys and Judd. Hawthorn also have an elite midfield. Hawthorn had a quality defense that work well for each other and geelong had a defense to rival any in the comp. Hawthorn built their team around the twin towers up forward and now have the most potent forward duo in the competition while Geelong have an above average forward line with a couple of stars like Chappy and Stevie J.

Thirdly apart from Cox in '06 and Lade/Brogan in '04 none of the ruckmen since 2001 are in Hille's class with Jolly maybe on a par given his superior tap work so 6 of the last 8 teams to have won a flag have done so with a lesser quality ruckman than we currently possess.

All the talk of Ryder being a ruckmen may be true, but where has he predominantly played in his 50 odd games, im pretty sure it has not been in the ruck, and if hille had not gone down injured im pretty sure that he would still be playing down back. Hopefully Hooker shows a bit in his run this year, and if/when he does, i will return to eat my own words. :p

I'd look at Currie, the rest do not interest me one bit. I'd rather keep our picks this year

So you pick the worst ruckman on that list because he is young.

What are the chances of picking up the other McVeigh within the next few years? Who would want to play for the Swans (as in he would probably be glad to get out of Sydney, apologies Spikey)?

His stock is rising and rising very quickly. Would have to give up a bit to get him IMO.

I would do; Brad Moran + your third round draft pick for Angus Monfries + our fourth round draft pick.

Do not understand the love for Moran ??
He can not get a game for the Crows who are pretty much playing just about every younf KP player they have in front of him.

I am no fan of Monfries but there is no way i would trade him in any deal involving Moran and secondly i am not sure the Crows need another small forward who kicks around 20 goals per season.
