I'm not doubting their potential. All of the players that Freo have traded for could be brilliant. But that is just it: 'could'. What I am doubting is the perception of low risk, and that the three mentioned all come with a degree of risk. Dangerfield was a low risk trade - limited injury history, high performance. Likewise Jonathon Giles was also low risk (albeit low reward). Both players came to their respective clubs as advertised.

But with Bennell, Kersten and McCarthy there is lot of unknowns circling them, and that right there, the unknowns, the calf injuries, the drug history, the limited time dealing with the best defenders in the country, the lack of impact whilst playing in a top side, that's all risk. I'd argue Kersten is probably the lowest risk, but he was also the cheapest, and likely the lowest reward, much like our Vardy trade.

It comes down to risk of the commodity versus risk of the trade, which obviously ties in with the cost.

Agree that each of the commodities come with a degree of risk that you've highlighted above, however in terms of the risk of the trade (being a bad trade) is low given what Freo paid.

Nonetheless even considering the risk of the players as a commodity Bennell et al are certainly not list cloggers.

I can't remember where I read it, but Port are meant to be interested in Ryan, so he could be the player they're interested in with this pick
I think Ryan's dad would have played with Paddy Ryder's dad too

That would make sense since the pick they traded in is before both wa teams. Disappointed we didn't add another second rounder.

Haven't looked into the others but while I want SPP I think it's reaching at 12. Not convinced about his decision making. Ideally we would have 12 and something in the late 20s to get SPP, but no cigar.

Ellis and mcginnity retired. Cavka also due to his unfortunate foot problems. Brown has walked off into anonymity. Bennell the only player genuinely delisted. None of those players had any meaningful impact in 2016

Mitchell is a welcome and surprise addition that improves our midfield if only for a year. Vardy gives us a level of ruck depth for minimal cost but with low expectations and no hope of filling the void that an injured Naitanui leaves

Our first 3 draft picks are unchanged apart from the impact of the 2nd round FA compensation picks.

Any improvement got 2017 needs to come from the young group of sheed, Duggan, nelson and barass who have already shown the capacity to be AFL players. Cole, partington, lamb and karpany also need to improve and push for regular selection

Redden and Jetta need to justify their trades because they gave us next to nothing in 2016. If yeo can fulfill his potential that'd also be nice

We go into 2017 with much the same list - Simpson needs to drive them really really hard over this off season so they repay his faith in them.

We still have the same fundamental deficiencies esp in the midfield. Mitchell will make a difference no question but we really need our 2nd tier guys go to the next level as you say. They have a lot of work to do.

For all their tough talk, the Gold Coast capitulated a bit on JOM. Made Hawks sweat on the time but got well under. Should have put the foot down and sent him to PSD, with the bonus of Hawthorn having cleared Mitchell and Lewis for nothing.

Not to be a smart arse, but Simpson "backed the group to bounce back" after each shitty loss and unconvincing win in 2016.

Meanwhile we dropped our pants(Kyle) and got spanked in the first week of the finals, at home. Worst display of heart i've seen in some time.

The biggest change to this team shouldn't have to come from new personnel like Mitchell, it should be among the players themselves. Some heart, mongrel pride in the jumper would be a start. Also new on field leaders have to emerge. That's a must. Coaches also need to continue developing properly.

In short, i agree with you Keys, just had to point this out.

It's the problem when you talk tough. The GCS president puffed out his chest but it turned out the be a whole lot of bluster ant not much else

They ended up doing the pragmatic thing and taking what the best they could get but it looks like a backdown

They approached the Prestia trade more maturely and got a similar result without the circus

Plus you have to judge our efforts by those of others you are competing with, so an A based on:

Hawks gone backwards, Adelaide treading water (Gibbs would have improved them), Geelong WTF?, Bulldogs no significant improvement, Collingwood - jury out, Sydney nothing.

Don't consider GWS's improvement, because nothing can stop that juggernaut but we may have a window of one more year until Armageddon.

Freo will have some genuine improvement and we would want to get them in the 1st derby because by the end of the year, they might be looking good. Mind you, no Pav, a crippled Johnson, Sandi one year older, a decidedly uncomfortable Balla's and Suban should mean we have them covered.

They did somewhat, but I think they just partly wanted to make the Hawks sweat.

I can't for the life of me work out why the Hawks did the trade with the Saints. That really screwed them over imo.

They could have just offered the Hill pick 23 and their future 1st rounder for JOM. It's effectively the same as what they ended up giving to GC (arguably better depending on their ladder position next year).

Arguably the lack of heart and mongrel could be a result of being 'backed-in' by the coaches consistently over a number of years.

I'm not saying he's necessarily done the right thing but he's gone all in with this list. It's his 4th year as coach and early days he had the excuse that he inherited the list so could only work with what he had.

That excuse is gone, he's had the opportunity to make assessments of each players ability and to make changes accordingly. He's stayed with this group so if they serve up the same heartless crap they did at times this year then he deserves to be judged harshly for it
