Okay, Brad Ottens is our main target in trade week. So:

1. We will lose our first round draft pick and a player.

2. Effectively we have our 2nd (32), 3rd (48), 4th (66), 5th (82) Draft Picks still available to use. I'm not suggesting we use all four.

3. Shannon Byrnes will be promoted.

4. David Spriggs will be traded possibly for a draft pick. Lets say we get a 3rd round pick for him (36-51).

The question is who if anyone do we attempt to trade for, assuming we land Brad Ottens?

We would have draft picks 2nd (32), 3rd (36-51), 3rd (48), 4th (66) and 5th (82).

Do we use only 3 selections in the National Draft and possibly go for a recycled player with the 3rd one?

Do we trade for more established players to add more depth?

Ideas?

Ideal Situation would be to give say Rahilly and Spriggs to bombers, who would give Richmond Bolton and somthing else we would get Ottens.

Then we could trade say Playfair + Chambers + a draft pick for a high draft pick

All in all get a few players who wont make it, add a draft pick with them and get a top 20 pick in return

Essendon looks like a club that would get involved. They want Spriggs and I'm sure Richmond would accept our first pick and Mark Bolton. It's just a matter of what else the Bombers would need for Bolton. Spriggs + McCarthy/Rahilly/Rooke? I dunno. They always drive a hard bargain so I don't know if they'd go for that

With other trades I just think we have to sit back and see what happens. Every year some good players get traded for very little just because they want out. Brett Burton had a terrible year but I'd love to have him at the Cattery. He was a gun in 2003 and is still pretty young.

I'd think we'd only take the bare minimum 3 picks this year as our list is preety good.

PS did anyone else see that red head Bates yesterday. Surely he is destined for Geelong with a head like that. Don't like our chances of him lasting to pick 32 coz he just ozzes class.

I know for a fact that Sheedy believe the sun shines out of Bolts arse. Mark isn't against being traded, but Sheedy will take some convincing.

Yes BC1, did see Bates , I could just imagine thats how Steve Johnson would have been at that level. One the boys who nominated for special excemption cause of his age.FootyDraft.com has him at 19

Matthew Bate
Details:
Club: Croydon/Eastern
DOB: 24 May 1987 Hgt: 190cm Wgt: 85kg
Position: Centre Half Back/Full Forward
Natural Foot: Left

Honours:
Morrish Medal (best player in TAC Cup) 2004
Interchange in TAC Cup Team of the Year 2004
National Draft Camp 2004

TAC Stats:
2003: 13 games, 8 goals, 11.6 PPG
2004:

Strengths: Bate is a red-headed utility who was only given an exemption to the draft in September, a week after he was declared the winner of the Morrish Medal. His main asset is his versatility - Matthew can play great footy at either end of the ground. He was excellent in defence early in the year, before moving forward late in the season, where he has kicked several big bags.

There is a lot to like about his game. He is a long and accurate kick, good with his hands and very good at mopping up in defence. He has great goal sense as well, capable of the freakish snap as well as the set shot.

Weaknesses: Can fumble a few marks still, although he gets first hands on it a lot of the time. Needs to work on his right side.

Footydraft.com comment: His late nomination will have thrown a few clubs, but his versatility and scope for improvement would make him a great selection.
--------

I think it might be Spriggs and Rooke to Bombers.Rooke is tough and I can see him fitting in well with Solly. So how do we see it working

Ess give Bolton, get Spriggs and Rooke
Geelong give Spriggs,Rooke,P16 , get Ottens
Richmond give Otten, get Bolton, P16

I like it but I think its still light

With our picks . Question we seem to have done very well with Preseason picks .Does a Preseason pick count as one of the three we need to take?

By the sounds of that maybe he might last Turbo. Geez he looked good. He's still 17 and 190 cm. Those Aussie kids usually don't stop growing until their almost 20. Would be a great get. Fingers crossed. (nothing will surprise me after Tenace last year) A few boys caught my yesterday. Betts would be really good for us. The kid Dunn has all the skills and agility for a KF and Jessie Smith (the non north one) reminded me of Jason Johnson the way he was crashing the packs.

Lynden Dunn
Details:
Club: Mooney Valley/Calder
DOB: 14 May 1987 Hgt: 192cm Wgt: 90kg
Position: Full Forward/Full Back
Natural Foot: Right

Honours:
National Draft Camp 2004

TAC Stats:
2004:

Strengths: Dunn is a versatile key position player who has been used in a variety of positions by Calder during the year. He is still very young and was granted an exemption to be eligible for the 2004 draft.

Dunn moves well, has a good leap and can take some good contested grabs. He can be very dangerous up forward as he tends to find space well but is also fairly strong in a one-on-one contest.

Weaknesses: When playing forward Dunn misses a lot of easy shots for goal, his conversion rate is below 50%. Can be sucked in by an opponent as he enjoys the verbal stuff.

Footydraft.com comment: Given he is so young might be worth a punt very late in the draft rather than having to pay a higher price next year. Potential to be a good key position player but will need time and good coaching.

Thought the kid playing FB for the losing side had some potential as well. Can hyke the ball, just needs to pick a couiple of players outs

By the way , Weaver posted his trade mix on another thread, Our Round1P and Round2P and Kent Kinglsley. For Ottens Id say Id do the deal.

Geez If Dunn's around late in the draft I'd take him for sure. Kicked two crackers yesterday. Did miss some set shots though. Whilst not being ripped he is much bigger than Mackie, Lonergan and Gardner.

Matt Little was the leading goalkicker in the TAC cup? where is he expected to go?

Mid-Late draft pick I'd suspect.

Lacks versatility and is undersized to play as a full-forward in the AFL.

Then why does he play him in the backline?

Because he has no other options.

Mark doesn't want to play there, but being the professional that he is, he does what is asked of him.

GeeCat said:
Probably not, he'd end up as another flanker if anything; something we are in abundance of.

We do have an abundance of flankers, but none have hands like Little.

PP , he does have great hands but ahhhhhhh I just dont know.Hes just doesnt look strong enough to play as anything other than a flanker yet he is a bit like Kingsley is more of a mark/kick player. I prefer Bate he is more creative when the ball is on the ground and looks to have the structure to get a strong build.Yes no doubt strong hands but you need more than that at the A level. Still there when we are having pick 60 something and what the hell, nothing to lose really is there.

Why do you guys seem to think we want Bolton? We don't.

Why do people assume they know exactly what their club wants?

Not having a go at you, but none of us have any real clue about which players our clubs want or don't want, so statements like yours are rather redundant.

How much is Nathan Thompson worth on the open market? A second round selection?

What about Enright, Spriggs and 1st round for Ottens (as part of a trade or 3-4way trade).

Then sending our 2nd round selection to Hawthorn for Nathan Thompson.

Out: Enright, Spriggs, 1st round, 2nd round
In: B Ottens, N Thompson

If you believe 'The Hitman', he's worth a top 5 pick and a quality player.

But then again, this is the same bloke who said Hawthorn were certainties for the top 4 and we'd win the wooden spoon.

So when our coach says we want two first round draft picks, he actually means we want non-key postion playing talls? Got it.
