This will have sweet F*** effect on the 2013 season which is all that really matters now. Pies are probably worse off with Lynch and Young than they were with Dawes and Wellingham. We're down Young and up Lake which makes us a substantially better team. We'll still find a few gems in the draft and at the end of the day Port could have been given picks 5, 7, 9, 15 and they'd still be f***ing terrible.

Good post. The draft picks will definitely have no impact in 2013. I think most people underrate Lynch though. I think he is likely to produce more in 2013 than Dawes did in 2012, and he will be a lot better playing the Leigh Brown role that Dawes couldn't do.

A major problem with these compensation picks is that they are tied to the club's draft position. Obviously a third round pick for Melbourne (49) and a third round pick for us (66) are very different.

Surely Young is worth what Danyle Pearce is? Should have been pick 42(?) for Young.

Disappointing but not surprising

In an age where match fixing, players gambling, tanking and other way that could impact results of a footy match is looked at as the ultimate sin, it is amazing how the AFL can straight out reward compensation purely based on the strength of the club. Same players, same scenario, however Hawks struggling financially and toward the bottom of the ladder, those two picks that Port received would be what the AFL would have rewarded the Hawks.

This is plainly rorting the system to even out the comp. You get punished for achieving things in this league called the AFL.

We are going to have to get our trading skates on next week. One pick inside the top 60 and four list slots open. Tom Schneider may prove better value being listed than whomever is still available in the 80's.

Im pretty flat at the moment, after a few years in a row of really good trading periods, I thought we were in for another good one when we got Lake on the opening day.

Since then it just seems Hawthorn are getting screwed (by themselves or the AFL) at every turn. As ti stands our depth has taken a beating and we will hardly register in the draft.

Hoping for a more ruthless attitude next week. Cant get much for Gilham? He stays for depth. If we lose more depth for some pick around 40 I'll be livid.

Fair point.

The equation is fairly simple to my mind. If you could get a pick in the 40's for Gilham (and I doubt we can) what delivers more value; the draftee and the salary saving or the known quantity Gilham who is more expensive but will be able to contribute in the short term?

For Hawthorn right now? I would think the latter. We've traded for a flag next year. If Lake and Shoey go down, Gilham is more valuable than a 18yo taken at pick 45.

Need the cap space next year? Move him on.

Collingwood will really benefit by getting Young, big time. We've just got pick 66 for giving a big leg up to a major contender. Sigh.

I agree. We need three picks in the draft however, so 66 is still live right now.

The AFL's equalisation policy works against you the higher you finish up the ladder.Being that we finished on top, we get zero leeway with anything.
Their processes are set out to make it harder for us to challenge next year, and give the lower finishing clubs a chance. Today confirmed that for me.

The compensations picks are not surprising. Young is a borderline best 22 so to expect anything better than a 3rd rounder was unrealistic. Murphy played just a hand full of games. We bitch and moan and state we wont miss him, yet expect him to be worth a 2nd rounder? Ridiculous.

Port played the FA game really well because they also traded away a 3rd round pick when they didn't need to. They were rewarded for that, along with their lowly finishing position. The AFL was never going to reward us in the same way.

The AFL will make it very hard for us, Sydney, Collingwood etc to dominate the competition. They don't want that. It is not in their interests.
That makes our GF loss all the harder to accept because it will only get harder.

Some nuffie on SEN reckons he has inside word that youngy couldnt do a full medical and his ankle is not too good. I remind you i said nuffie and hopefully a nuffie is right once in awhile

Really? dont think so...the afls system allowed collingwood to pickup lynch and young for nothing, whilst handing them 3 first round picks...lol yeah poor collingwoods copping it sweet.

Or well their are still hidden gems out there in those late picks, after all Matt Suckling was a 60+ pick and wasn't Brian Lake a pick up in the 70+in the 2001 draft, And don't forget Sewel and Mitchell they were rookie Draft picks that we nearly lost to Carlton and other teams as we thought they were to slow for AFL standard!!!!!
