who will we look at next year from the other teams?
Who would you like at Port Adelaide next season?

My first Idea Mark Blake from Geelong?

Re: Trade Bait

Two main targets should be Jack Redden from Brisbane and Daniel Menzel from Geelong. Id look at Lewis Johnston from Sydney as well.

Re: Trade Bait

I wouldn't trade anyone in next season - I would use 2011 and 2012 to play as many kids as possible, use the early picks that we get for more youth and aim to trade in a couple of hard nut 28 year olds when free agency comes in - a mid and a medium size defender.

Know a mate of his and word is he's as good as gone so maybe we could pick him up via the PSD. Sydney are Nick Saltering him, playing him in the back lines in the reserves when he was drafted as a forward. First rounder too from memory.

Re: Trade Bait

No chance of getting Redden or Menzel, we need to be targeting players that aren't currently well thought of by their clubs but will turn out good. Maybe Johnstone is an example of that.

Re: Trade Bait

Broc McCauley (Brisbane rookie we could give a Mumford package to)
Shaun Hampson (Carlton)
Cameron Wood, Lachlan Keefe, Brad Dick, Sharrod Wellingham (Collingwood)
Rory Sloane, Will Young, Ivan Maric-if cheap (Adelaide)
Heath Hocking, Kyle Reimers (Essendon)
Matthew Stokes, James Kelly (Geelong)
Jordan Lewis, Brad Sewell, Ryan Shoenmakers, Shane Savage (Hawthorn)
Matthew Bate,Lynden Dunn, Nathan Jones (Melbourne)

Re: Trade Bait

I agree with Natman to be honest. Trade our bads for some draft picks, and blood the youngsters.

His brother Troy in the 2012 Draft could be an option. A promising prospect.

We could still use a couple of those draft picks to get younger players from strong clubs that can't crack it.

I'd like us to have a crack at Brent McAffer as well.

Re: Trade Bait

Why are we trading for hacks? That's half the reason we're in the situation. Trade players who have value but clearly aren't working out to the highest bidder for draft picks.

I'd only trade for a ruckman and I wouldn't be giving up any draft picks, ESPECIALLY any early ones.

Hay gaiz, do youse reckon we should go fer Cameron Cloke, Jay Nash, Danny Meyer or Scott Harding?

Re: Trade Bait

macca good call with redden , im a big fan but im pretty sure he is contracted, and brissy fans reckon he aint going anywhere ( isnt that what we always think?). menzel as well would be great.

ild also consider levi greenwood, although he isnt a star is a hard working mid. i like the call to get johnstone, although hasnt made it at sydney?? still young though but he doesnt sound like a kf as he is 191-192cms?? would be maybe a lead up forward?? the one ild be keen on is grundy. good player , 24 i think?? sa lad but will be high priced in trade value.

trengove has a year to go on his contract but ild be offering our first pick and something else good to melb to see if trengove can be swayed, get in his ear now let him know he is wanted here ( other than that our 1st pick is untouchable!!!)

tapscott?? im not really sure, if we only see him as a hbf hff probably not worth going after him but is a good footballer.

b.smith worth a try, would love him at pafc but very unlikely, and im not sure we should give up our first considering how early, although if we dont like any mids around our pick may be worth getting in his ear??

hayden jolly this is the big one ild be going after, 19 yrs old should be ready to go next year mid, would like to see his form in the neafl but if he is being held out of gc, and they really need to spread their stars out ( they would ideally love it if we could get them a compo pick! one if we get one or another in a 3way trade).

jolly and johnstone look the most likely within our capability to get.

honestly think it is an absolute waste of time going after an average ruck, when lobbe will at very worst be an average ruck next year, and redden or bass should be ready to step up if lobbe goes down. lets face it not having a good ruck isnt going to be the difference between missing out on top 4 for us or us being contenders so why give up anything substantial for one? lets try to develop one of our own, when it gets to the stage when we are climbing the ladder and if none have come on then trade for one, wont be any shortage of good sa rucks by the looks of it.

unfortunately we have to look at our possible trade options in terms of what we could give up....

and i stress the term... possible

motlop, salopek, surjan, k. cornes, salter, ebert, rodan and pearce.

honestly the only one there i want to see gone is motlop. salopek is 26, at the top end of our older group, and hasnt gone on with it like we would hope. ild hate to see surjan go, im not sure why he isnt being played week in week out ( match fitness maybe?), should become a 200 gamer for pafc but im wondering how how long he will wait on the bench before looking elsewhere?? cornes, top end age, he he wants to play out his career one club then fine, but will struggle to get games as we blood youngsters for the future, should go elsewhere. salter i would love to see played but would not blame him for looking elsewhere, would be an asset to several teams especially to gws. ebert needs to continue form in the midfield, but is hardly assured of a spot in 2011. rodan is just an offensive spark , and alot of our supporters want to see pearce gone. i dont, i believe that what he does he does really really well. dont call a zebra a horse. what pearce does he is a star at.

of those just pearce would have a big value. the rest wouldnt alone land us any of the above targets. there are several there that i would be very keen on shipping to gws, on their own would be late picks but i would try my hardest to pack a couple together for something decent ( ok im not thinking we will get one of their 1st rounders obviously), but we saw the talent that went in last drafts 2nd and 3rd round. maybe im dreaming but of the above list barring pearce and surj ( maybe salts if we will play him) ild be shopping all of them to our old buddy at gws.

teams that we could target as needing some of those players ( in the 26-29 age range). gws, st kilda ( if they decide to keep having a crack with the current group would push players like mots or sal), sydney.

players we may lose, carlile, trengove.

i reckon trengove will stay, i thought carlile was gone but he seems to say otherwise especially has rohde convinced. worst case scenario trengove does go ild be playing mega hardball there. asking for trengove back ( we need to send something their way as well). i dont see too much else of as much value to us as what we would be losing.

Was pick 12 in 2008. He didn't have a 2009 season due to injury. He's only being played in defense to improve some aspects of his game that need work. In line for a debut soon and I highly doubt we have any plans to let him go, very highly regarded among the club.

Re: Trade Bait

I was thinking maybe Nathan Lonie.

The exception ofcourse is talls because of their later development, but really the only way we're getting a tall worth having is if they want to come home. Unless Sam Fisher or Mark Jamar get homesick this offseason, we should be stockpiling as many top 40 draft picks as possible. Send all the hacks Choco traded for back to him in a package deal.

Re: Trade Bait

Jesus Christ people did Michael Voss's systematic dismantling of the Brisbane Lions teach us nothing?

Until free agency comes in, the trading game has remained the same for over a decade. Nobody trades away anything worth having unless they have behaviour or salary cap issues or there is a go home factor.

Get good kids through the draft and blood them asap.

if that is directed at me i dont remember saying we should top up on top aged spuds to get us back up the ladder.

in fact i said quite the opposite, i pointed out possible targets, all sa kids and good footy players. and pointed out who on our list is likely to be offered up. just some kids ild like us to get in their ear, and maybe one or 2 say yeah for sure, or if they are contracted when it runs out they at least consider us. most of what i was saying was offloading some of our top aged players for 2nd-3rd round picks if possible, to try to draft some more kids. losing too much of your senior talent at once isnt great for your team but all the ones i mentioned havent had a great impact anyway...

Re: Trade Bait

Not directly at you but the thread in general, sorry I didn't mean anything personal.

B.Smith, Redden, Trengove and Tapscott would be brilliant but they're about as realistic as Judd and Ablett unless they want to come home, and even then manufacturing a trade is difficult without paying well over the odds, and the draft is out of the question because of GWS.

Those sorts of trades happen very, very rarely. Clubs aren't willing to give up players worth keeping. Name a first round draft pick who was favoured at his club that requested a trade at the age of 19 or 20. They just don't exist, and even if they did we're looking at our first round pick which will probably be pick 4 or 6 at this stage.

Re: Trade Bait

What I mean is that while Voss looked brilliant trading in all these supposedly talented guys, they were all guys that hadn't made it for one reason or another with their other clubs. We, like Brisbane, are very early on in our development. Use the draft now, and save the trades for when we're starting to challenge and players start to look at us as a club where they can go to win a flag.

Re: Trade Bait

It is a good call that us bringing in marginal fringe players from other clubs would just Vossy us.

Trading for flankers is usually only worthwhile as a top-up for a team that has good structure. We have no structure.

No-one will trade us a top 12 player that is not `homesick' (aka. been offered $$$$ and declares Port as only destination).

Every other club also wants to move on their `just a glimmer of potential but its 50:1 against him playing another 50 games' players, just like we do.

Player-for-player trades are increasingly harder every year. Ten years ago, players mostly accepted club-initiated trades, but its not so now. Players will drive trading.

Re: Trade Bait

Voss didnt look brilliant at all. I think most were thinking what the **** is this guy doing trading like a PS3 nutter.

Re: Trade Bait

As Tredders noted in his weekly blog Port offered Mark Jamar a three year deal a couple of years back when he was still struggling to crack the Melbourne side. Melbourne countered with a take it or leave it one year deal in the last chance saloon and he took it! The rest as they say is history.

But it is an instructive example of just how hard we find it to lure anyone, even ex-pats back home, over to Alberton. Our living on the bare bones of our arse existence bites us hard everywhere.

I just write trade week off as a sad joke now.
