Trading the #1 pick

very difficult
Ryder for 17 and 37
Jenkins for a 10 spot upgrade in the second round
Monfries for a late 3rd
Gumbleton for a late 3rd
Crameri for a 2nd rounder

Would you give up Grundy for a late 1st and 3rd? cos we'd deal
Cox for a pick upgrade
Elliot for a 3rd round
Moore for a 2nd round? we'd give you 2, just to be generous

All of this difficult to deal with talk is old hat. Its from the Sheedy days when we tried to pry West out of the Dogs for nothing.

We have behaved no differently than Collingwood did with Beams. Or Port with Stevens (they even let him walk for nothing in the end).

You forgot to mention that we traded Monfries to Port even though he was a FA so Port didn't lose out on their compensation

The Ryder deal was anything but settled during trade week. That is the best example of the Bombers' playing hard.

Because it was a ****ing stupid offer. Pick 17 for a player they called the last piece of puzzle for their premiership.

Our grandstanding got us another pick, which we used on cooney stupidly but that is besides the point.

Weren't you blokes asking for Wingard though?

Na, wines i think. Both clubs were being ridiculous, however ours was just returning the disrespect that we copped off port.

Happened last year aswell. I dont think anyone thought carlisle was going to up and go to hawks cos a deal seemingly couldnt be struck with the saints. Didnt stop dodoro from sprouting it on radio and causing shit in the stk camp though. He was clearly annoyed at the offers the saints were putting forward at the start of trade week, as seen in the multiple videos he put out on the efc website.

We were asking if Wingard was available. Big difference. If he were we would have traded 19 and Ryder for him.

In fairness though, both Dodoro and Port admitted that if future trading were in at that point, Ryder for pick 17 plus 2015 1st round would have been done day 1.

I agree completely, but I was referring to Dodoro at the time asking for any one of Hartlett, Wines or Wingard in a straight swap. In ya dreams, Adrian.

Incorrect, he was asking if they were available. Don't let that get in the way of a good rant by you though.

Purely hypothetical, but consider this:

What if Essendon and Dodoro planned to use pick one to wipe GWS and GC out of the draft?

They could potentially use pick one to bid on Bowes, forcing Gold Coast to move up the draft order and sacrifice much of their draft hand in order to secure him.

Then, holding pick 2, they could do the same thing to GWS by bidding on Setterfield.

Now I'm sure Gold Coast would not let Bowes go, but I'm less sure about GWS.

What I find interesting about this, is the threat of wiping both clubs out of the top end of the draft in exchange for one player each might be an interesting point of leverage in trade negotiations.

Would GWS for example by more inclined to trade with Essendon to relieve them of pick one and avoid that scenario?

As I said, purely hypothetical, I in no way think this is actually what will happen, but I find the possibility of it interesting.

What do you think?

I've always liked you Dodoro :D

GC/GWS would just let Essendon take the player.

If GWS move up they would just take Todd Marshall. That is literally the only reason they are wanting to do this. As it is I doubt they will bother doing it.

Why exactly would they just take Marshall? He isn't an academy player and tall forwards are pretty much the last position they need to draft.

From their zone, though. He would've been in their Academy but isn't allowed to because they haven't spent enough time in his development.

Also it's hard to think of anything they actually do need.

Could do with some more KPD coverage, especially if Marchbank does leave. Also you can never have enough quality midfielders coming through the ranks.

A quality small forward would pretty helpful

Drafting small forwards is seriously hit and miss.

I'd rather draft midfielders that can be rotated through there or developed in to small forwards.

pick 1 just doesn't have the appeal like other years their is no standout player . Don't think bowes or setterfield is worth pick 1 . GC and GWS would pass .

0% chance GWS match a Pick 1 bid on any of their academy players. There is however a chance they trade with EFC in order to get Pick 1 as well as their Academy players. EFC will have no leverage to threaten bidding on their players though.

On GC and Bowes, it would be very hard for them not to match a Pick 1 bid. It is overs however, and even EFC wouldn't be stupid enough to commit that act of bastardry against an AFL client club with a rich trade bounty for years to come.

In short, EFC may trade down their Pick 1, but i don't think either GWS or GC will take remotely seriously the threat of Ess bidding 1 on Bowes or any GWS academy boy.

Just imagine the EFC fans reaction if Dodo got left with Setterfield or even a potentially go-home Bowes with Pick 1 lol. He just wouldn't do it for a whole host of reasons, and everyone in the industry would clearly know that.

GC have already apparently ruled out trading for Pick 1.

GWS may trade a lower first rounder and a player/s for it.

Which is why I am genuinely open to the idea of trading it for two later picks.
