Looking forward to reading the training reports on here, because I doubt there will be anything in the media about our training.

The posters who get along to training & provide reports & photos are proving to be the only source of training information for those of us living outside Victoria. Keep up the good work.:thumbsu:

I will thank everyone in advance for the great reports and photos that you provide.
Something to look forward to :thumbsu:

Great write up Harks. Agree with all of that. Ratts did give the players a spray in the middle of the ground about halfway through the session, so he obviously wasn't happy with the way the boys were training.

On Bower, he came out for a few minutes, and then went back inside, and spent a fair bit of time on the bike. No idea why Henderson isn't training with the main group either.

How was Jamo, Gibbs and Cachia?

None of them really stood out to be frank. Gibbs does what he has to do without any fuss or bother, and you really don't notice him out there. Only saw Cachia once IIRC, and that was delivering a bullet like pass into the middle of the ground. Don't recall who he hit lace out. Jamo was there, but did nothing spectacular.

Here's my essay;

Training started off early with Capuano directing our 4 rucks (Warnock, Jacobs, Hampson, Kreuzer) in the centre of the ground – for that authentic feel. They were doing repetitive taps without moving their feet – 10 or so taps per hand in a direction nominated whilst the ball was in flight – something to help their endurance

The rest of the boys had their regular ‘I think I’m Eddie Betts’ pot shots at goal in the little maestro’s absence before going into the customary kick-to-kick with the partner of their choice. The group was then called in to jog a half-lap and huddle up for stretches.

Noticeable absentees were Murph, and as far as I could see, Henderson – which was a real shame, the one player I was most hoping to see. Bower too was either in-and-out of the new Visy building or absent completely. I hope this is just load-management and conditioning strategy devised by Mr. Cordy.

The boys had a bit of a kicking session split up into 3 groups, I’m not sure what two of them were (I think Talls and Smalls) but the last was definitely Rookies. And boy was there disposal poor. Casboult has an iffy ball drop but was one of the more accurate nonetheless. He is a likely size and is strong through the hips.

They were pretty heavy on with the fitness in this session. Next, the boys lined up across the wing and did shuttle runs back and forth – 4 or 5 in total – Imagine a beep-test, however with longer distance to run, and subsequent longer recuperation periods in between. Although it was hard to tell who was leading, it was easy to tell who was off the pace. Bradley Fisher was a real let down – you’d think after Fev getting the boot he’d be champing at the bit to make an impression – he did however join the ‘rehab’ group later in the session, which might explain it. Lucas, Judd and Carrazzo were first to the line.

Next drill was an end to end exercise, 5 on 5. The blue set of 5 would attempt to keep possession from one end of the field, whilst being pressured by the green set of 5. Blues would then kick it to another set of 5 greens and those same blues would now be the ones applying pressure. A completely freeform drill (without cones) that showed some important things in my opinion. The first, was that there is nothing like experience for being able to cut a swathe through the oppositions lines. Setanta, although he would make you nervous, wasn’t at all scared to take on his opponent, or all five of them, and beat them. Simpson was silk in traffic and deserves some kudos for it. Judd quite audibly taunted Gibbsy - “come get me” – and as soon as Bryce committed he looped a handball to himself straight over his head - his acceleration was breathtaking. This man has a point to prove – more on that later.

On Gibbs, he isn’t a line-breaker per se, and I don’t think he ever will be – his disposal is where his potency lies, and should he have a season like his last, with some natural improvement, he’ll start working his way into that group of the top midfielders in the competition. However, he seems to be just going through the motions, which may suggest one of two things. Either he is ‘cruising’ and in the zone, or he has become comfortable or complacent with his game. If it is the latter, then he needs to realise he has the potential to be more than just an accurate kick, and if he can add the running aspect to his game, we will see why he was taken #1.

Back to the 5 on 5.

The next thing that it showed was that some players lack fundamentals to their game, that are unfortunately innate. (Sorry Guns) Ellard showed very little awareness, and it was either his decision making or disposal that, on a number of occasions, got his teammates into trouble in this drill. Unfortunately, I think he is just a filler on our list, and with the inclusion of Joseph onto the main list, and the recruitment of Cachia, we have the tough little man spot sewn up. Supposedly he was a FP back in WA, however that spot too is occupied by fair amount of talent.

This drill was disappointingly stopped mid-way so the players could receive a roast from Ratts, it seems he was sick of this corralling shit and implored players to make their men commit by being confident in themselves. I share his sentiments, sometime in matches players just stand on a wing in neutral because no-one is willing to engage them, boring as anything I say.

“Nook” Russell displayed his best and worst in this drill. His main problem is consistency. One of his earlier efforts had him attempting to hit a man dead-on, and floating a helicopter straight to the opposition. One of the following saw him spear a 40 metre pass to the furthest of his team mates across his body – a perfect hit, that garnered amazement from the small crowd in the Legends stand pocket. He is the type of player that just needs a rocket every now and then to remind himself what he’s capable of (as evidenced by his return to form post-Bullants last year)

Next was timed laps, where the boys had a set amount of time to run (I assume, as their was a guy collecting data at the end of it). Anyhow, I’m sure everyone noticed this – Kane Lucas led every player in his group to the post, every single time. Everything about this kid screams ‘professional’ and next time I head down to training I’ll keep more of an eye out for him. Waite was also showing no signs of discomfort and was moving well. Garlett was really pacing himself – which was disappointing – especially for the aboriginal boys who probably have to work harder to build their tank, he was just jogging about.

The final drill was conework, 1 on 1, up the wings from one goalsquare, to have a shot at the other. The intensity lifted here, it was fairly mediocre before this point. But many more targets were hit and the players, at least at the legends end, were showing some accurate on-the-run goal kicking which is always encouraging. The usual suspects stood out, but the big men (bar Kreuzer) were having trouble with their hands in the air. Both Warnock and Hampson looked exceptionally clean below their knees, all session in fact, hopefully next session the players will get hit on the tit and things like this will become an afterthought. Sadly, Tuohy blew a knee out in a marking contest (Cheers Harks) and he was in some discomfort. It took him a few minutes to compose himself but at the very least he walked from the field. Here's hoping a speedy recovery.

After they caught their breath from that drill, Gibbs and Johnson where designated kickers to our talls leading out of the goalsquare. Poor Setanta couldn’t hold a mark for the life of him. His goal kicking was very good, he just needs to make them stick in the air. Kreuzer was a sight to behold. He has bulked up, and had the surest hands out of anyone out there. Also an honourable mention to the rookie listed Josh Donaldson who wasn’t dropping anything either, he also has a booming (i.e. 60m) kick and the thighs of a rhinocerous (albeit a smallish upper body) – could be a good tall ‘project’ prospect.

Finally, the rucks and Brock McLean were kept back for some extra mentoring. It’s pretty much a cert that ‘Chook’ is a lock for the C. I’ve no idea about centrework, but it was pretty evident that they are grooming him for this role – he was otherwise pretty unnoticeable during training – will keep and eye out for him next Saturday.

Just on Judd, he looks like a man on a mission. He didn’t miss a shot at goal, or a target for that matter, didn’t drop a mark, and was one of the guys forcing turnovers in the 5 on 5. He led the running, as is to be expected, and also had voice out there. He smacked of confidence. He gives himself enough margin for error but never uses it. In an interview mid-season he spoke of feeling nervous again this season, and I think it showed in his disposal, lets hope that this confidence carries through to the season proper and we witness his optimum.

I look forward to reading the reports, I hope some others post with some positive reports.

I'm deflated with the info so far.

Seems to be the same old reports, McLean,Kreuzer,Browne,Judd,Waite busting a gut, some others just going through the motions.

I have the next 2 weeks off, I'm going to a session to form my own views.

Tuohy popped a knee in an spoling attempt. Got propped up by trainers and limped off the field. May not be too bad, though.

Ratten called for a chat in the middle of the ground and wasn't impressed at all with the work ethic.

Went down like a brick.

I rocked up completely exhausted. Spent 5 minutes wondering why the blue cutout of the man on the mark wasn't moving.

Went behind the goals for a bit and chilled in the shade. Took a few shots for goal after training.

I can't honestly remember anything else from training except wondering which foot is Yarran's preferred.
