Managed to sneak away and have a good look at training this morning. I won't bother with a long-winded description of the session, but will provide a very brief outline and then comment on my player insights by exception. Before you ask, Dave, no, I don't have video or photos.

The session was a skills-type session (as opposed to a fitness session). There were four stations set up around the ground each working on a different skill-type. The playing group was split into four, and they just rotated through the stations in 15-20 blocks. The stations were focussed on marking long kicks into the forwardline / backline, working on quick decision and disposal by foot in traffic, traffic-based stoppage work, and one other one which seemed to be hands in traffic (but couldn't really see it and didn't spend too much time looking at it).

Selected (random) memories / thoughts from the session. As you will see, my focus was mainly on the younger / less exposed guys.

- One of the 4 groups was the active talls (i.e. ruckmen and kp players), and John Barnes was following this group from station to station and giving guidance. He then took some ruck drills at the end of the session. Clearly is a ruck / development type coach working with the talls.

- Keefe, N Brown, Dawes, Wood, Reed, Farmer didn't take part (i.e only walked a few laps or did quick hands drills). Apart from Wood, none of these guys had visible ailments, but Wood had his right arm in a sling. Was disappointed to see Keeffe not participate, as I am hoping he can develop quite a bit this preseason and push for selection, and a trip to Arizona would be important in this.

- Witts has a reasonably neat left foot kick, despite being somewhat awkward looking. He can hit short (30m) targets pretty well. He still got pantsed in body-work (both in ruck contests and marking contests), but hopefully some more leg strength and instruction will help him develop in this area. Also needs to work a little on timing his leap to take the ball at his highest point and with a full outstretch, which would make him difficult to spoil. At this point he still takes the ball too low (from what I saw).

- Macnamara has terrific skills for a tall, particularly on his left where he rarely missed a target, long or short. Shows the value of repetition training, and (as I have said previously) embarrasses some of our senior players who do not work on their opposite foot. Also possesses some good zip for a big bloke and a good leap. Just needs to work on his one-on-one body work / ruck work.

- Yagmoor is quite good overhead when competing with players around his size. I think he will develop into someone who can regularly outmark the small forwards (like a Milne, etc) when he puts on size and strength. Just reads it well and is very clean (one-grab).

- Mooney stayed back a little while and had a kick with Clarke. His kicking is still very robotic, as you would expect (i.e. puts head over ball, then throws back left arm, then guides the ball to foot, etc), but should develop fluency over time. Kind of reminds a little bit of Clement's action, which was never all that fluent (but obviously effective). His actual kicks were quite accurate over 20 - 30m, constantly hitting low bullet like passes to the chest of his target, despite sometimes not quite spinning right. Signs are okay at this early stage, but it should be noted that he was under no pressure, and didn't really kick too much in full flight (i.e. ony after a few balancing steps). Will need to start working on his left over this period as well (never too early).

Ceglar looked okay in the marking and ruck drills, and has a neat short pass.

Happy to answer any questions, and I will post anything that I may have forgotten if I can remember it.

Also didn't see Ball, Jolly, Maxwell, Heater, Swan, Krakouer, J Thomas. Not sure if it was because they weren't there, or I just didn't see them (I only had a good look at 3 of the 4 groups).

How did Elliot and Clarke go?

They went okay. Nothing really extraordinary to comment on. Clarke's kicking has not dropped off at all (but still seems to give the ball slightly too much flight). Elliot took a nice one-on-one grab, but didn't spen much time looking at him. Looks okay.

The contrast between our training and Melbourne next door on the other oval was massive. They just ran and ran and ran. Not a football in sight.

Few senior players missing - maxy, swan, taz, johnno, jolly, didak - could be more or less

Bucks looks fit enough to join them!

Witts is a monster!!

no surprise to see the older group missing. arizona itself will be a gut buster no doubt, so dont want to push too hard now.

and yes thanks for the reports folks. :)

Johno was there, but yeah, no Taz or Didak either (from the list I mentioned earlier).

Yeah, it was funny watching the Melbourne training next door. For the second time in a row we got to see them doing almost nothing but laps of the oval, while we worked on skills and development... Must be great to have Arizona on the training plan where we can get 5 weeks worth of fitness training benefits in just 2 weeks, and spend the additional time on skills...

You're right. He was, remember him clearly now!

Did u see mooney do any sprinting/vertical leaps?

thx for the report

There wasn't really any sprinting done in the session, so no on that front. I saw him leap to take a grab that Marty kicked to him (a little too high) and it looked okay, but you can't really tell much unless he is jumping over people's heads.

Two things that struck me with him was that he has a bit of a waddle, and he is shorter than what i was expecting.

Thanks for the report JB, and this is also great news, we have a ruck coach who could actually ruck.:)

Barnes will be great for the young rucks at Collingwood, he has a great personality that will endear him to the players quickly, but he also knows what he is talking about.

And as for Dawes not training fully, he stated yesterday he's still getting over post season surgery to his ankle I believe.

Yeah, agree it is good news, although given our rucks, I would have preferred a ruck coach who was exceptional body on body, rather than super-mobile with a good leap (and that is only assuming that their actual playing style actually matters necessarily to their ability to coach, which is probably not at all the case).

In my opinion, body-on-body work is the KEY thing that we need our young rucks (i.e. Wood, Witts, Ceglar) and peripherals (Keeffe, Macnamara, Dawes) to master, in terms of contested marking and body on body ruckwork.

Someone like Ottens as ruck coach would have been great (assuming he could impart some of his style).

Anybody know when the boys run the 2km time trial?
Must be soon.
My guess would be Friday, which is the first date (18th) that all players are required at training.

We should sponsor the dog for 2012. Dave, what are your realistic thoughts on the dog, keeping in mind he projects as a KPP?

btw I saw Heater, Didak and a third person who my friend thought was Dale in Launceston last week, having what looked like a relaxing coffee outside a pub. They were being swarmed by people, but seemed happy enough.

My training report is: the above three looked fit enough and their coffee raises were imaculate for this point in the pre-season
