If any one has the time to go to training tomorrow morning (8am I think) I would really apprecite getting a run down. Especially love to hear about the boys who didn't play in Dubai and their progress. Cheers:thumbsu:

I'm contemplating heading down but not liking the fact I have to get up early on a sat morning for this :p

Ok Training started out with the boys wandering out from the rooms around 8.10 and concluded at 10.30.

At first it was only a squad of 31 that appeared out. Tippett wandered out at the same time to do some bike work and was shortly followed by Gill in his bike shorts.

Also appearing much later in the session were Biglands, Bassett, Shirley and Jericho, who had obviously been doing some work indoors. The four of them did a few little kicks to each other and some handball work before heading back into the rooms with the rest of the group at the end. Bassett was required to run a few laps though.

Ed Curnow was running laps at the start of the session and then onto the bike where he was being worked fairly strongly by Charlie Walsh. Petrenko was also running laps accompanied by a trainer, at a slower pace than Curnow. He also did some small skill work with the trainer before heading over to Charlie on the bike.

Also taken out of the main drills on a couple of occasions was Myke Cook. He was specifically working with Schwerdt and a few of the younger trainers on tackling, breaking tackles and recovery work.

Training was the normal warm up for about 20 mins which involves work with the balls. I did like that Vince decided to use a footy as a pillow at one stage when stretching. Not sure how comfortable that would be though. This was followed by a series of 10 min drills, starting off with the handball game where two players are in the centre and have to try and either intercept the handball or tackle the player with the ball.

The groups then headed to the eastern goals where a goal kicking drill was set up with two groups behind the goals, and four within the 50 arc. Two deep in the pocket and two more towards where the point of the centre square would be. There was some very nice kicking for goals, some not so good. Maric was quite impressive, I think he might have missed only one shot on the run. This lasted for again about 10 mins and alternated between no pressure from the coaches to pressure then being applied on the kicker.

This was followed by the group being split into three groups. Two of these groups consisted of two teams of 6 players playing the little 'touch' football type game where they have to only handball and try and 'score' a try. The first 5 mins I thought it was pretty 'on' but then Craigy blew his whistle and told them 'full on', and the boys took it up a fair ol notch!

The third group consisted of some of the younger players being matched up on each other in the forward area and they were working on leading, marking and boding skills. Kenny was matched up on Sellar, Armstrong on Jacky. Others included Kite, Cook, Walker, Gallman and another pair that I wasn't sure who they were. At one stage Craigy yelled out to Walker from the main section of the ground that he needed to keep his head up when contesting the ball.

After 10 - 15 mins of these groups the whole group came together and the first full ground circuit work. There was no kicking for goal, the aims seemed to be more in line with running to the right spaces and leading and passing. There were two footballs used, one on each side. Stiffy wandered off to the rooms at the end of this drill. He appeared halfway through the modified game.

They then set it up a bit more by starting with a midfield ball up and working the ball into the forward line. Some players had red and green tops on. Of these players 4 were pretty much on the sidelines for a brief period as the 'interchange' players. Symes stood out quite well in this drill for my mind. At one stage in a break in play, Goodwin who was on the sidelines was instructing Vince where he should have been placing himself as a defensive midfielder. MacKay was noticed by his teammates, he may be slight but the boy has talent and is like a terrier after that ball.

Then came the modified game. Two teams, Orange and Blue. Teams were as follows (from those I could recognise).

Orange:
Gallman, Armstrong, Massie, Griff, Porps, Edwards, Knights, Mackay, Jacky, Walker, Kite, Vince, Campbell, Otten and Hart

Blue: Sellar, McGregor, McLeod, Maric, VB, Symes, Stevens, Thommo, Rutten, Bock, Douglas, Goodwin, Moran, Stiffy and Doughty.

Final score was (including a 9 pointer from Symes :D as the boys pointed out)
Blue 1 3 3 - 30
Orange 0 2 1 - 13

Goal kickers were Symes 2, Walker 1, McLeod 1 point, Kenny 1, Maric 1 goal 1, Thommo 1 point, Tippett (I think snuck on the field to stand at full forward for a short period) 1 goal and Sellar 1 goal 1.

Blue was obviously the stronger team but there was some good movement back and forth down the field. Truck seemed to be playing the loose man in defence role and enjoying causing havoc for poor oranges entries into their forward 50. Moran moved a lot more fluid and quicker decision making than the last training session. Porps and Symes were matched on each other and to start off with Porps was chasing Symes a lot, but he then started to get a bit of the ball himself. Whenever a point was kicked the ball started on the 50 for the other team to bring it back in. If a goal was kicked then back to the centre for a throw up. Griffin and Maric was an interesting duel. Both were working quite hard around the ground either defensively or to assist with attacks. Maric I think shaded Griff just in the overall on this, but at the centre bounce Griff's leap was impressive as were his taps down. Very clark-ish ;) A noticeable positioning at one stage was Stevens on one wing with Douglas and Mackay on the other wing. The game lasted for about 20 mins and then they headed for the shade for a drink and the ice vests. Unfortunately I happened to be sitting right where they headed! Griff got a few compliments from his teammates for his game. I also discovered that Reilly should never be given any red drinks ever again. After his teammates dobbed him in, NC commented that Radar was a "credit to himself" :p :D

They were given a good 5 - 10 min break before heading out again after some instruction from NC about the next drill.

The penultimate drill was again a bit of circuit work but this time a kick out from goal to a lead to the pocket area, the ball then had to be brought back into the centre square, and the player who kicked the ball lead up the wing to provide a lead and then kicked into the forward line for a mark. Again about another 10 mins with a few modifications. Douglas was wearing the white guernsey for the majority of this drill. From what I can gather, the player in the white guernsey is supposed to be used for every movement through the centre.

Final drill involved about 8 groups doing kick to kick across a 20 m space. Variations ensued and a lot fun seemed to be had by them out there.

Most of the boys headed in but Griff and Maric stayed out and did some one on one work, focussing on hunting the ball after a tap. Making tackles stick seemed to be a priority. I felt for the poor trainers that were being tackled by both Maric and Griff. The Texas Ranger was doing some work off the side where he had to chase a trainer that had a black strap around his middle and try and catch it. Jacky, Thommo and a couple of others had a few shots on goal.

Burton and Hentschel were not seen all session.

That's what I can remember so far, and I did managed to have a chat to a fellow BF-ite in the last half of training. Always nice to put faces to names. :D

Champion report:thumbsu:, even if you did yellow card me once;):D
Between you and CG i'll never not have my crows info fill each week. Thanks:thumbsu:

Yep ash23, Taylor's nickname from most of the boys is either Tex, Texas and even sometimes they call him Ranger.

Where did Porplyzia and Symes play Nickinoo ??

:thumbsu:Fantastic report Nikkinoo.

Good to hear Symes had a great training week.

Cant wait till they play Freo/WCE
Ill be there:)

As part of the midfield rotations and I was very pleased about Symes' attacking abilities.

From what i saw in our first preseason game i think the crows are going to have a very good midfield rotation system. I think we will have both our two half forward flankers both playing as midfielders as well. It was interesting every bounce in the centre against collingwood we had 3 different midfielders in there. This allows for instance a player like Vince and Porplycia who maybe technically lined up on the half forward flank to run around as midfielders at the same time. Same may happen with our half back flanker who maybe rotated into the midfield as well. I think we have about 9 players rotating through the midfield. Players playing on the wing also seem to rotate through the middle as well.

Nikki,

Thanks mate you are a champ:thumbsu:. Very much appreciated. Looks like we wont see Jericho in the next game which is a bit of a shame but hopefully we get to see some other young boys like Otten, Gallman etc.

How did Armstrong go on Jacky. Was it a pretty even contest? I'm really looking forward to seeing this boy as hear he has amazing poise and foot skills.

Thanks Nikki, as usual, we are so lucky to have people like yourself who are willing on going out early on a saturday morning in order to give us lot such a wonderful report. :thumbsu:

I too am interested to hear your thoughts on Armstrong. He has kind of slipped into the shadows this pre-season, with some injuries etc. It was great to hear he had a competitive knock.

Just a quick question. Does anyone know how Moss is going? I think I read somewhere he was struggling to get into training a bit.

I think he was the one who was complaining about soreness in his leg several times during the session

Went down to training this morning. I wont do a big write up but here are a few observations.

The first thing I noticed was Greg Gallman on crutches. He was on the sidelines for a few minutes, and then wandered down to the changrooms. I heard him mumble to a supporter that he finds out today. I assume he was talking about his knee.

What I did notice about training was how good everybody's skills were. Especially the skills by foot. All passes were direct low and hard. There is a lot of forward hand balling that I noticed which i thought was a big no no, but I guess thats what happens when you try to play on at all costs

A couple of players that stood out to me were Poplyzia and Vince. Porplyzia has perfect balance. He looks like he is going slower than everybody else but its because everything he does is relaxed and instinctive. Vince looks well and truly like he is ready. I had my doubts before the season but if he plays the rest of the season how he looks on the track and what we saw in Dubai he will have a good year.

I couldn't help but be impressed with Brad Moran. He stands out a mile away but he too moves with good athleticism and doesn't look awkward like a lot of players his size. It wouldn't surprise me if he was named for round 1.

Gill cant be far of from returning because I saw him run laps the majority of the session. He was hardly breaking a sweat. Hentschel joined him in the last 15 minutes but within 3 laps Gilly was half a lap in front. It did look as though Hentschel was blowing pretty hard so IMO he is a fair way from playing AFL at the moment.

I know everybody loves getting stuck into Doughty but its not hard to see why NC loves him. He runs hard, gives plenty of voice, kicks , marks exactly how you would want a professional to train. He seems pretty popular with the other players as well

Sellar was marking the ball pretty good but his skills by foot may require a bit more work. Douglass was running around like a mexican jumping bean and Reilly looks in good shape.

If the team play how they look at training I think we mightn't go as bad as some suggest.

Where i was sitting, next to one of the pockets a few players had several snapshots for goal and all of them missed. A lot of Aboriginal kids came and joined them at the end of training and the first one that kicked the ball from the same pocket snapped it straight through the middle.:p
