Popped in to the first hour of training until my six year old boy had enough watching and had to go outside for a few dobs!

A few observations;

As reported - no VB, Rutten or Porps, there were only 26 training in the fit group!

McIntyre and Hinge were deep in defence - a lot of positive vibes through the group over McIntyre (is his nickname Wheels???).

Three impressive new blokes - Pfeiffer is a classy unit, Campbell is an above average left foot kick and one who just ooozes excitement is Kurt Tippett. He marks and kicks like a natural footballer, (he was a basketballer) and is huge

:thumbsu: ;)

There’s no doubt Pfeiffer will be an excellent player for many years. I think people forget he’s only 19 years of age. So I assume he has resumed competitive training?

And Campbell should be back for Norwood this week which is great news. One of my favourite players and it shouldn’t be too long before people see why.

Have to say I'm pretty excited about Pfeiffer after having now watched a few SANFL game replays. I actually thought he was around 21 years of age these days, but 19? I like the look of him, he's got that real class about him in the way he moves, he can kick goals and yeah, genuinely looks a player.

Is there a young player on our list who you're not excited about, whose name doesn't start in "L" and end in "uke Jericho"? I'm not having a go, but you're awfully positive about pretty well every youngster on our list. Is there anyone you don't rate?

Just on that, Jezza definately appears to be on the outer. For example, more time was spent on McIntyre being involved than Luke.

Archard - Don't think he'll make it, looked lost even in the pre season for mine. He's small and lacks pace, can't see him staying on our list after this year.

Hinge - Has had a fair bit of time in the SANFL and even though he's had a decent performance this year I just don't rate him as a player who could become a good AFL footballer.

Meesen - Has failed to come along like everyone hoped. As much as I want to back him, I doubt he'll ever play a game for the Crows.

...never rated Gallagher either, hehehe.

I rate all the other kids, they've all shown great signs so why should I doubt them? It's a pretty lame outlook to heap doubt/skepticism on every kid that arrives on the scene.

Oh, I agree in full with that. Every kid who has been drafted has been judged, by people far more qualified than us in this area, to have the potential to be an AFL player. But by the same token, only a relatively small percentage of those taken in every draft actually make it.
I was just wondering who you weren't a fan of, because since your arrival, you've probably been the most positive poster regarding our youngsters we've had around here in a while.

Heh...well yeah it's mainly the three I mentioned. Had I been here four years ago it would have been a different story altogether (imo we recruited averagely-poorly during Gazza's time at the club); I hated it, I thought we had totally sucky kids back then, very few keepers. It's kind of refreshing to see so many that I rate "likely types" these days. I do kinda question myself though, I find it hard to believe that such a large proportion of our youngsters could be showing as much as I perceive. I could be crazy but then, perhaps we have just recruited well in the past few years?

I think most on here would agree that our recruiting in the last 3 years has been a heck of a lot better than it was in the 4 or 5 years before that. I believe there was a thread a while ago where someone analysed each draft from 2000 and 2003 and the consensus was that each one was a failure, apart from the rookie draft in 2001. Our recent drafts have been much much better, and I agree that we have a good group of kids at the moment. But the majority of them have a long way to go yet before they're ready to be consistant starters in our first 22. Time will tell how good we've really done.

I was at training tonight. Doing some light training was Mark Ricciuto, Ivan Maric, Nick Gill, Ken McGregor and Rhett Biglands. They started by doing a few laps, stretching and some handball drills. Then they headed off to the other side of the oval and worked over there for the rest of the evening. Robert Shirley also joined them later on.

Besides Nathan van Berlo and Jason Porplyzia, Ben Rutten, John Meesen, James Sellar and David Mackay weren't cited for the night. Graham Johncock and Matthew Bode were out on the oval for a few minutes just wacthing.

The first main drill was a crows v crows white team drill. This was like a game situation and generally done well. In the second drill there were no white tops used, instead they were just working on moving the ball of one end to the other. Once the ball game down inside the 50 Neil Craig would shout 'switch' and the ball was kicked to the oppostie side of the oval and eventually worked back into the corridor and into the other 50. The third main drill there were two groups down each end, half wearing white. 2 footballs were chipped around between the players in a marked rectangle before a coach would call for a football. Then the players lead out of the rectangle with short leads until the middle of the ground when it would start again.

Scott Welsh left training a bit earlier and missed the last main drill, which was just a kick to kick drill with the players in groups of three and two 'defenders' presenting in their way.

Hmm I wonder why this could be ;)?

Fighting Dreamer is just telling it as it is. Our recruiting in recent years has been far superior. We are now looking at character as well as skill and football ability and we are geting people of wonderful character to the club - VB, Knighter, Blackie Douglas, Huddo, Ivan etc.

We have had few mistakes although for one would not have picked Gilly. One of the reasons you do not pick certain players is that their bodies break dwon too easily. Gills broke down at SANFL level on a regular basis so the prospect of this happening at AFL level was quite high. Mind you I can see the logic.

I would have gone for young Westoff. Although he was skinny as a rake the things he can do on a three penny bit are very similar to Trent. And Trent had no meat on him when he first played for us.

I look forward to Pfeiifer playing some games this year as well as one or two others.

Given the age of our list this year however some hard decisions will need to be made at years end. Do we restrict the progress of soem of these boys or do we keep players like the Mass, Dogga and others on the list. Form can be the only guideline we can use and we will not know this to the end of the year.

Does anyone know what is happening with Sellar? Is he injured? I was hoping to watch him play on ABC this weekend.

He played for Glenelg seniors on the weekend and spent the majority of the game at chf. There is a thread on SANFL rnd 2 somewhere around here where others at the game discussed how he went.
