I headed down to the training session this morning to see a real solid, 2.5 hour workout by the boys. The session was a bit more varied than what I saw before Christmas which was good to see, and they all looked fairly fit.

First thing's first, Van Berlo was out and running :thumbsu: Gee, he looks like a unit too, his upper body is absolutely enormous, he's clearly been working himself hard in the gym while he hasn't been able to run. Today he was running (albeit in a straight line only) and looked relatively unhindered. He was doing a bit of work with Martin, and neither of them have any strapping which was nice to see.

The main injured group was pretty small today - Donnelly (who seems to have some strapping over his left knee), Van Berlo, Symes and one other that slips my mind right now made up the core injured group. Bock was out doing running, along with Talia who already looks bigger than he did when he first came to the club a month ago and looks to be running brilliantly for a guy with supposed hamstring problems, and participated for part of the main training session but joined them later on, and (Scott) Thompson spent much of the session working individually with a trainer. He didn't seem to be hampered during the session but favoured his leg when he first came out so presumably he's a touch sore from a previous session or overstretched it or something. Luke Thompson also participated in much of the main session despite the shoulder strapping but occasionally joined the injured group.

I didn't see Porplyzia or Moran out there today - though I did see Moran in the cafe after the session, same as last time. He's obviously a fan :o

The session was broken into several game-day type events and specific drills, such as a drill where one side had to work the ball from one end of a marked area to another using only handball while another team tried to stop them. If the ball carrier had even a hand laid on him before he dished off the ball then they stopped the drill and restarted at the other end. The highlight for me was when Danger received the ball at one end from a trainer, put his head down, ran straight through two opponents, sprinted to the other end and handballed it to the other trainer, not even using a single one of his teammates :D

Speaking of Danger, I know I've said this before, but his teammates must hate him or something because they keep selling him into trouble :o Three or four times a ball was passed to him that fell a metre or two short, and whereas most players would then simply not be able to recover the ball, he'd dive into it and end up gang-tackled as soon as he got it :o

In the usual game-day drills it was clear that they were using three players, namely Cook, Sloane and Armstrong, as their go-to men when running out of defence. Usually one was off and the other two were on opposite teams so I guess the idea is they only have one of them playing the role. Armstrong in particular looked great, hitting the target all but one time, and Cook is a livewire, sidestepping and delivering. Sloane got involved in a lot of play and used his hands to good effect but his kicking let him down a touch.

Speaking of poor kicking, one of my favourite new players in James Craig let himself down a bit today with some poor kicking. It wasn't really Craig's day overall. At one point they had all the new guys (barring Talia, and of course Wright who is still overseas) running laps. Clearly in the lead right from the word go until they'd finished running several laps was Luke Thompson who looks fit as a fiddle. Gunston and Shaw came next, followed by Jaensch, then trailing a fair way behind was Riley, and then finally Craig :o He didn't look exhausted, I'm just not sure it's that easy to move his frame as fast as the others. It was good to see some of the young guys getting involved with leadership too, with Talia calling out to the boys encouraging them to keep running, and Jaensch was later going at the same pace as Shaw and calling "come on Shawy, one, two, one, two". I guess he's done a couple of preseasons (albeit at SANFL level) before and that would be good for Shaw who has come straight out of the juniors. At one point Van Berlo was running with Craig to help set the pace too, great to see.

Riley looks small out there :o He's only young and has come from a nothing comp so he's a good couple of years away, and he's got something going for him, but he really looks like a boy among men even in our young squad (admittedly full of young kids who look like they've been raised on a diet of steroid and red meat). He looks to me to be the lightest player on our list.

Towards the end of the session they were doing a drill where a player would kick out from the goal square to several players before rotating to receive the ball themselves. The receiver would then have to kick out to the wing to a player who would bring it back into the corridor where another player would then drive it forward to a contest between a key forward and key back. All the players would rotate throughout the positions and the key point of the drill was to use your voice, so you weren't allowed to dispose of the ball until you heard the voice. Sloane was good, encouraging everyone to "keep the voices up boys!", and it was a pretty positive drill overall. Young managed to pinpoint a few 50m kicks from the goalsquare which will make Drummond happy :p I was trying to hear some of the nicknames but a lot of the new kids just seem to get called whatever goes through the mind of the receiver at the time. Riley was called Riley, Aiden, or something else I could never figure out throughout the session. Davis seems to have the nickname "Philthy". Rutten meanwhile has an awesome voice, it's this massive foghorning base voice that he booms out names with, hard to miss him :D

At the end of the session, several players stayed out to do extra work. Jaensch and Riley were practising handballing, and eight players (Knights, Tippett, Sellar, Edwards, Mackay, Craig, Walker and Luke Thompson) practiced goalkicking. At one stage Sellar was working with Hart, presumably to figure out how to beat a defender. For once in a way Armstrong didn't stay out late. He walked by me near the end of the session and a girl asked where he was going and he called back "I'm having an ice bath, want to join me?" :D I love Armstrong.

Hard for me to pick a trainer of the week today, since nobody really stood out. I'm going to have to go for a tie between Armstrong and Cook, both of who looked very classy.

Sorry, haven't been following it recently and I can't readily locate the right "injury list" thread for 2010 ... this article http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,26554098-5016212,00.html says that Rutten has had a knee reconstruction which was news to me
Brad Moran and Ben Rutten are recovering from knee reconstructions and trained on the bikes instead of completing the time trial along with Nathan Bock, Nathan van Berlo and about six others.

Can someone please point me to the latest "injury list" thread ?

Cheers cmndstab, good to hear some positive news about VB. Would have liked to know what Moran was wearing at the cafe though..

Thanks Stabreagus.

Good to hear about Armstrong and Cookie Moster.

Like the nic-name Philthy, need a moustache though.

And yeah, neither Rutts nor Moran have had knee reco's

The players couldn't get enough of me

while i was up in the gym after I left you guys, Tippett, Petrenko, Johncock and jacky followed me to work on their fitness

It is probably a compliment. As you mentioned before, he may be able to put break his way through.

Thanks fro your great training report!!! A+ for that! Rapt to hear that VB is out there now, even if he is only running in a straight line. And Dangerfield! I can't wait for the season to start - it seems that Danger really learnt a valuable lesson this time last year. I'm also looking forward to seeing Young in the preseason, it seems that he has surprised the club somewhat, coming on more quickly than expected.

The young 2009 recruits (inc rookies) are all sounding as if they are pretty good, esp Talia today, from your description. This is the first time I've read a training report where James Craig hadn't been amazing. I really like the looks and what I've heard about him.

The voice drill that you described late in the session sounded quite interesting. Rutten does have an amazing voice.

I'm so impressed that 10 guys stuck around after training for handball or goalkicking practice in 30deg heat. How did they go with the goalkicking? Porplyzia should be out there training them:D

Can you tell us any more about Luke Thompson? Not very much has been reported about him. It must be the mother in me, but I worry about the young guys from elsewhere. Do you get the impression that they are settling in and are well supported by the others?

I ventured down today to have a look at the boys. I cant add to much to what Stabby already posted as we were chatting most of the session and he stole my discussion points :p.
I was very impressed with Talia. His size, speed, power and ball skills are exceptional. At one point he was have 1 on 1 marking against Bocky and he performed well.
Truck spent the whole session with the main group :thumbsu:.
Thomo is an absolute machine. The size of his arms are massive.
Tex has really improved his defensive game. In one drill he laid a big tackle on Thomo who was trying to clear the ball from defense.
In another play Danger was sold into trouble with a bad pass and tried to break the 2 man tackle and was done HTB. To his credit he quickly stood the mark and chased after the hand ball reciever in Macca. He ran him down with a lunging grasp and effected the turn over. Great to see a young player not drop his head.

Never mind Chief Crow, we'll credit you with a percentage of Stabby's kudos. :D
Great report Commander. It is fantastic to be able to get these reports on line. Wish I could get down there to contribute. Keep up the great work all.

Thanks bossman. Sounds like we're on track - can't wait.

Audited a thread on the main board by some Fudging Pie asking why people thought Adelaide had an upside. Feel like bundling up all the training reports and posting them. Wouldn't do any good, though, so we'll just have to wait until the team shows the doubters.

Thanks for that Stabby. I was down there with the kids and was trying to work out the names of all the guys doing the laps. Personally, I thought Craig bore a resemblance to Nick Gill. Hopefully he won't have the same similarities on the injury front though. Thought VB looked incredibly fit. I noticed on a couple of occasions when the new guys finished their laps and were catching their breath, that VB hadn't even raised a sweat. Also thought that Truck was looking slimmer, particularly around the rump.

I was also down at training today and quite enjoyed not freezing for once :p

Martin was the other player in the restricted group. I was really excited to see him today because he was running! So his recovery would be coming along smoothly I would assume. VB was also out running with him for a bit and as cmndstab said helping the first year guys with their laps.

Another player that was missing was Chris Schmidt, unless I just couldn't spot him... it took me all session to spy out Maric.

Bock completed the warm up with the group but then moved onto doing some sprinting and kicking with Talia who suddenly almosts looks bigger than Bock. Maybe its just the tan :p but he's taller than Bocky.

One of the drills early on, which impressed me, was a simple handball drill but the small group had to go through on their right and left side. I don't think I saw one dropped handball either so hopefully this comes in handy on match days.

Donnelly spent some time kicking with a trainer and I'd say he's got quite the sharp left foot now. He really has improved and looks comfortable kicking. Its just a shame he's not out there getting the 'match' experience with the other guys.

Walker stood out to me a bit today. He's certainly put some weight on and toned up and he looks faster and more agile. He appeared confident when he was chasing after a player and at one point broke away quickly after receiving the ball and he just accelerated away out of trouble. His goal kicking was spot on as always.

Burton looked good, I don't think he dropped a mark, Tippett on the other hand just couldn't seem to hold on to all of his. Johncock looks in good shape, Sloane seemed to get a lot of the ball and Knights' goal kicking was spot on.

Craig has a bit of an up and under kick and while he looked pretty accurate at the goals his kicking style looked a bit awkward so I'm interested to see a bit of him in the SANFL this year.

Oh and I don't think Riley is that small in terms of weight. He's like a younger version of Martin. He moves well. I reckon Gunston would be the skinniest on our list now. Shaw appears to have beefed up over the Christmas break.

Thats about it I think... I'll pop up a few photos soon :thumbsu:

I thought about checking the website to see if they were training but I just couldn't be bothered making the effort. :p Trust me to not go on a day that's actually nice weather...

Well done to all who made it, great work. :thumbsu:

My man Cook doing well, what an absolute superstar he is. And Young actually hit targets! Gun!

was down there today after my youngest son begged me to go so he could get a few autographs. So as a good father should, I made him go for the full session. Few things I noticed today:
1. Talia is incredibly quick for a guy of his size, made Bock look like a dinosaur.
2. Talia has no left foot and was clearly trying to kick with his left on the few occasions he was handling the ball.
3. Walker has impressive hands and has definitely developed a further yard of pace.
4. Tippett trains incredibly hard and is intensely focused, hits everything at 100%.
5. Armstrong is definitely a card, said referring to my son 'Look Mackay shrunk in the heat'.
6. Compared to last year's training, the intensity has lifted another notch, possibly because of the competition for spots.
7. Shaun McKernan is one solid unit.
8. Sellar is moving very well, looks a marked improver from last year.
9. Nathan Van Berlo is freakishly fit, doesn't even seem to need to recover after a run.
10. Birdman rarely misses a shot from anywhere.

Was good to get to training for the first time in ages and good to see the quality of the ball movement and intensity. let's hope it translates to the season proper.

Strolling towards the oval the sun had a real hardness to its bite on my face but the shade on the north side of the oval still held the cool moist air of the night. It was refreshing sitting on the grass sipping strong sweet coffee and swallowing the delicate fruity fresh muffin while listening to excited chatter about the players. The sky was a pure clean blue - the kind of blue you can only get in an Adelaide sky - the grass thick, freshly cut and billiard table smooth. "Life's good", I thought. It was about to get better.
My gaze took in details of the surroundings beyond the coolness and shadow a little more. I was here to see the players and there they were, right in front of me - strong, lithe, healthy and frighteningly fit - leaping, twisting, stretching, sprinting, on a rolled out field of green lushness.
Right in front of me were a small group of 4 players - handballing at light speed at each other, laughing at stuff ups and eagerly starting over again and again. Dan Talia striding out at good speed, racing repeat 50 metre sprints, 10, 12, 15 times, on a track not 5 metres away. I wished I was that tall, strong and athletic at 18. A young god on a mission that one.
The camera was next to me to get a few shots of players but I decided not to use it. This was just a lovely thing to be in - there will always be the tasky things to be overwhelmed by at a later date. For now I'll just drink in the moment. What a great start to the day.
This is why I love coming down to training when I can. Ah, the serenity.
