Xavier Richards
Brother of Ted Richards, Tall key position player

Brandon Jack
Kierans younger brother got a 2.94 in 20m sprints

Joel Tippett
Not sure about him training but we look like we will draft him in the Rookie Draft

Sam Naismith
208cm unit caught the eyes of recruiters

Dane Hampe
22yo mid who won the Phelan medal and has been playing with the ressies.

who should we take?

Brandon coz he can kick a footy into a bin over his shoulder without looking in one take, and Xavier so he can give us goss on his brother and make the Richards report even more interesting, someone needs to get back at Ted.

I really hope we draft Richards and Jack. How many guys can we draft in December?
We have Biggs and Robinson already so 2 more spots, we could have more due to some rules that gets Brisbane, GC and the Swans more.

It's an interesting bunch. Brandon Jack is super raw, behind where his big bro was at the same age, but he picked the game up later and he's slighter, suggesting he'll need a longer period of development for potentially greater reward. A rookie pick, maybe living with his bro to save money and stuff, plus the whole media angle (son of Garry, NSW boy, AND Kieren's younger brother), could make it worth it.

Xavier Richards is a budding key defender, and he's put in some absolutely fantastic games over the last couple of years, coupled with quite a few shockers. Seems very inconsistent, but definitely has talent. Wouldn't hurt having a guy like Ted as both a big brother and a mentor, same with Brandon and Kieren. We are somewhat lacking in the YOUNG KPD department, and he'd be a project, so could work out quite well.

Joel Tippett would provide some KPD depth, plus the family connection should we manage to land Kurt. He's been trialed as a forward and a ruckman at AFL level and pretty much failed, but he was never given a chance as a KPD until this year in the SANFL, and he was, by all reports, excellent. He may have found his niche, in which case he'd definitely be worth a look.

Sam Naismith is a young ruckman, relatively new to the game, who has put in some very promising performances for the Swans reserves. Haven't seen a whole lot of him, but what I've seen I've liked. Really good frame, nice and solid but with plenty of room for development (unlike Currie who, while talented, didn't really have a frame that lent itself to bulking up), and good tapwork. Raw, but again, worth a look.

Dane Rampe is a medium forward/defender. Played with Williamstown and cracked their firsts playing almost as an undersized CHB. Could develop into a decent tagger/medium defender/defensive forward. Smarter than his media performances would suggest.

I'd actually be pretty happy if we drafted all of them, but that's unlikely.

liz . She knows all the rules on lists.

Alas, no more. I used to be confident I knew the rules, but they keep changing them and now I only think I half understand some of them. I have just posted some stuff in a similar thread on that other website we're not meant to refer to here. I can't be bothered to repost the same comments here, but for those that don't mind visting RWO, this is the relevant thread.

Surely we've got to take Naismith, right?

Regarding the siblings, this is theoretically an elite football club, not Kieren and Ted's drip-irrigation installation business. We can't just be offering work to people's relatives and mates when they're at a loose end.
I dunno, I'm liking our new recruitment strategy. Collingwood should be very afraid ...

Dane Rampe is a gun. Left-footed half back flanker, was on Williamstown's list for a couple of years - can kick like Matt Suckling no joke and has dynamite pace. I see no reason he couldn't be rookie listed

While I don't think we should just pick up the brothers for the fact they have the same name I actually think they'll both be quite good picks none-the-less and in having the family support at the club I believe they're development would be more fruitful than without such support. The big brothers can go and tell the younger guys exactly what needs to happen in the right way for them to understand more-so than someone who may not completely understand how to get through to them. Apart from that, Jack looks very raw but exciting and having another Jack at the club (as BarneyBent mentioned) would be beneficial from a marketiong point of view also. I've heard that Richards kept Membrey goalless earlier in the year then got thumped more recently during Membreys outstanding finals campaign. 1-1 is better than 2-0 for Richards and by all accounts his good is great and his poor is horrific... The kind of risk I love to take with these kinds of opportunities.

I think in these instances you need to look at baby Richards best performances in telling what sort of potential he does have rather than his worst. Consistency is something that can be trained into him.

Exactly. If it was for a ND pick then maybe you don't take the risk, but with a rookie pick? I say we go for it.

Does anyone know how Richards was rated? Is there some kind of ancient thread on the 2000 draft with a write-up?

Are there any similarities?

One golden rule , don't pick so called raw ruckman, trade for ruckman like we did with Mummy as they take too long to develop. Have watched Richards and not impressed, too easy knocked off the ball

That rule applies for the national draft, sure, but guys like Dean Cox, Aaron Sandilands, etc, demonstrate the value of taking tall, skinny kids as rookies and developing them, especially as by the time he's reached any level of consistency, there will probably be space in the team for him.

As for Richards, big bro Ted was considered similarly not too long ago.

That theroy is putting all the eggs in one basket. All clubs think like this no one develops them. If there is one the rookie list is the right place to have a sniff.

Any chance of "best available" instead of "token NSW player"?

Yes because the policy of drafting NSW players has worked so badly in the past. Like it or not we need to give opportunities to the best talent in NSW and it has a pretty good strike rate of working.

Wouldn't mind see us rookie Naismith as a project. Worth the risk at the price.

Grown cold on the idea of Kurt, but would like to see Joel picked up as a rookie, we're very thin on KPD depth this year..... if 2 of Richards, LRT, Grundy or Johnson go down, which is quite possible, we'll need him unless they plan to turn Walsh into a defender.
