I am intending to go along to the training session tomorrow. I've never been before so I'm quite looking forward to it :)

One thing though, a week or two ago, Crow Girl (I think I was her) said that it would be at Max Basheer where it normally is. However, a friend of the family (one of the support staff) gave the impression to my parents this past weekend that they hadn't announced where the training would be and that it may not be at MB. He suggested possibly Norwood oval.

Have they announced it anywhere? Does anyone know where it will be and what time it will start?

Thanks for any help.

Edit: I see there is an article about preseason training on AFC.com.au today. It doesn't specifically mention whether tomorrow's training session will be at Norwood or MB though.

Edit again: I'm an idiot apparently, it does say it will be at MB. However, it says there will only be a light session from 3:30. I was looking forward to seeing a full training session =\ Maybe I should go on a different day. Next monday might be good.

If you could do your best Commando impression and sneak into Norwood oval to see what secret weapon they are trialing this pre-season, would be appreciated:thumbsu:

Actually Van Berlo has decided it's time to take over the coaching roles but just doesn't want to embarress the now ex coaching staff.

have been wondering how vineys arrival and craigs post-season comments re defensive cluster set ups slowing down the game would pan out. seems like they are possibly starting work on such things

ADELAIDE will train behind closed doors this summer as the Crows attempt to tinker with their game style away from the ‘prying eyes’ of rival AFL clubs.

The Crows will alternate training locations between the open spaces of Max Basheer Reserve, which backs onto two main roads, and the more secluded Norwood Oval.

The Max Basheer sessions will be open to the public, but coach Neil Craig said his team would take advantage of the increased privacy while working out at Norwood.

“We’re acutely aware of some of the areas we got stifled in last season with our ball movement pattern, in particular,” Craig said on Thursday.

“We just want to be able to practise that behind closed doors and away from the prying eyes of other AFL clubs. A lot of the Melbourne clubs do it now, so it’s just a degree of privacy.

“It’s always difficult for us because [we train a lot on] Max Basheer Oval and it’s hard to have a closed session out there.”

Adelaide adopted a faster game style last season, but Craig conceded his team had still struggled against certain opposition game plans.

“I don’t think we’re disastrous in that area [ball movement] of our game, but I see it as an area where we can make significant inroads,” he said.

“We were very good against certain opposition and certain styles of play, but we were very poor against a couple of styles of play. We just need to make sure that our style of ball movement and play can handle varying styles of opposition.

“It’s no big deal and the reality is, if we do it really well, from a spectator’s point of view, you might not be able to pick it up. That’s how subtle it will be.”

The Crows held their first training session on Thursday with a light skills session on Max Basheer Reserve.

Andrew McLeod, who will resume full training in three months after undergoing knee surgery, was a noticeable absentee as was Jason Porplyzia (shoulder), who won’t resume competitive training for another four months.

Ruckmen Ivan Maric (hip) and Jon Griffin (hip) are both on track after their respective surgeries and should commence training with the main group in a fortnight.

Nathan van Berlo is good to go after a post-season groin operation, while skipper Simon Goodwin (back) will remain on a modified program until Christmas.

Brett Burton, who is four months into his recovery from a knee reconstruction, has been given clearance to start running and prized recruit Patrick Dangerfield will join his teammates full-time in two weeks, after the completion of his Year 12 exams.

I wasn't intending on going to training today, but, with nothing much else to do decided to head down for a look.

There was quite a big group doing restricted work, I spotted Douglas, Jacky, Tippett, Petrenko, Goodwin, van Berlo and Maric. I swear I saw McLeod, but according to the website he wasn't there. This group mainly just did handball stuff. There was also a player on crutches who had to sit on a chair, they had their right knee strapped, at first I didn't think it was McLeod as I thought I saw him walking around, but I may have mistook Johncock for him!

The main group, looking rather sharp in their new training gear, started off with the usual kicking drill. Following on from this, they did a bit of 'wrestling', which was basically just two players going at each other and trying to bring the other one to the ground.

They then moved onto the one where they have four players against two, with the two defending for the ball and the other four kicking around in a square. Trent Hentschel was in the group closest to us and he looks good to go! If you had seen him for the first time today you would not be able to tell he seriously injured his knee a few years ago.

Petrenko was doing some laps by himself before Goodwin, Douglas, van Berlo and Jacky joined in. Jacky seems to have put on some upper body weight, but still has his left knee heavily strapped.

Our Irish recruit, Brian Donnelly was hard to spot, as he blended in quite well with the white goal posts. He was kicking over about 20 metres with a trainer who was assisting him, and he had a couple of shockers and appears a bit sketchy at this stage in the kicking department. He was then joined by Tippett who was learning to kick on his left foot. Donnelly is quite slight and needs to build up some muscles in his legs. Didn't get to see him run though, but he did complete an impressive one or two flick up thingos that the Irish players are known for when they gather the ball off the ground.

The only two main drills the large group did were pretty relaxed. One involved the player's congregating the centre of the oval, where four would lead out to the point of the square and receive the ball before passing it on to the other players leading out.

For the other drill, players went through a serious of handballs on the 50 metre line before one player ran on for a shot at goal. At the end of it all the main group did some light stretching before heading back around the stadium to go to their temporary rooms.

Douglas and van Berlo stayed back to do some kicking, Armstrong was working with a trainer as was Gallman. Walker was having some shots at goal and received a couple of pointers from one of the coaches. Symes also had a quick handful of shots.
Goodwin, Jacky, van Berlo and Douglas finally finished off with some light agility style runs around cones on the outer wing.

All in all the session probably lasted around an hour and a half and was reasonably light, but it was good to see them back :thumbsu:

Thanks for the rundown CG. A highly informative, detailed description as always. It is a constant delight to be able to read your training reports and hopefully this is just the first of many this pre-season ;)

Ten News showed McLeod, although seated doing some boxing with focus mitts, so your eyes weren't deceiving you.

Great news to hear that Rowdy is up and about again too

The new training gear did look rather snazzy indeed :thumbsu:

Good to see them doing some wrestling, its something they do a lot of in Rugby up here and should really improve our tackling skills.

Cheers for the report btw CG:thumbsu::cool:

Reports on the AFL website put Van B at nearly breaking Burtons 3km time trial record on the first day back.

Also - Reilley impressive. 4th in the time trial, Last man standing in the Goodwin Run.

He's going to gun it this year, we've all been waiting for it.

i was wondering if anyone knew how second year rookies James Moss and Brodie Martin did in the 3km time trial and the 'Goodwin' run this morning
