Mike McGrath] Manchester United are looking at Southampton's Danny Ings as a target during the summer transfer window. United have made enquiries about Ings’ situation. He has one year left on his contract and there is no agreement following talks over an extension

When Kun was leaving.

But this isnt a fall in the lap scenario imo, they'd have been wooing Kane for a while.
We were still a chance for top 4 when that was though so the Kane leaving wasn't a given like it is now.

They had discussions with his people last year when the gentleman's agreement with Levy and the club was put in place.

I dunno if you read it all it's fairly open ended. A lot of maybes and ifs. Says there is a chance they don't buy a new 9.

“These decisions are never easy,” Guardiola said ... “Maybe we could find a new player to replace Sergio in terms of numbers but it is almost impossible to replace him in terms of what he means to this club.”

He was probably asked about haaland or mbappe at the time too

The implication is clear in the article that Pep supposedly can't afford a big name signing to replace Aguero. It's BS, Pep generally gets what he wants most of the time. Pandemic losses aren't going to bother Mansour, he's run up far bigger losses in the past without so much blinking an eyelid.

I believe chef also correctly pointed out that City would hang on to Aguero for another season if they weren't bringing a replacement in. Which makes sense. Even though Kun is pretty much cooked why would you let him go if you didn't have plans to sign a proper replacement?

Yeah, and it sounds like Aguero to Barca is done.

Pep talks a lot of crap too

You were the one who said we were direct rivals. Regardless, you haven't been our feeder club for some time and aside from sh*t banter, nobody really talks about that these days. Selling Modric and Bale to Madrid for less than we offered put paid to that.

You're quibbling semantics here. We're not your rivals, City and Liverpool are your rivals. We have been your competitors for the last 8 years. And a good 40 years before the founding of the Premier league, but the latter is not really relevant. It's recent history and perception that will factor into any transfer.

Selling Bale and Modric to Real - although IIRC it was Chelsea who were after Modric most - might have put paid to it some sense, but not in others. In banter terms we went from being United's feeder club to Real's. In the media's eyes I'm not sure much has changed though. Witness the Poch to United campaign.

Well I do live in Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire is the epicentre of white middle class Spurs season ticket holders. It's pretty hard to avoid them. I'd know a whole lot more than you do.

I'm sure you do speak to Spurs fans. I do too. In the 21st century you don't have to be living in London, or Hertfordshire, to have an understanding of groundswell support, or lack thereof.

People don't pay as much attention to Sky and the Sun as you'd think. If you get annoyed by them, don't go anywhere near talksport as your head might explode at some of their 'content'. They may as well be doing an SNL sketch. The whole Kane to United thing was mildly interesting 5 years ago, but again was mostly banter to wind up Spurs fans. Now it is just boring and even he wanted to move, Levy hates United and United can't afford him anyway so I'm not sure what the big deal is.

It's not really a big deal at all.

I said the chances that we'd sell to United are slim, and that has several United supporters up in arms. However since we have consensus over the topic, I have no axe to grind. I have no desire to slander United, just giving a considered Spurs fan opinion vis-a-vis our relationship with United. And based on the last eight years, it would be an odd move.

Spurs fans I speak to resent City much more than United but I'm sure they'd prefer to sell him to a European club. I know he turned down Madrid 4 or 5 years ago. Not sure they have the money now even if he did want to go to Madrid.

Depends on the context really. City becoming rich happened at a bad time for us, just as we were putting 15-20 years of mismanagement into the past.

On the other hand, I suspect supporters are becoming somewhat numb to the nouveau riche phenomenon. Probably wouldn't blink if he went to PSG. Agreed that we'd prefer to sell him abroad, infinitely so.

The Utd thing is hard to explain who doesn't support a 'Sky4' team. It's just a constant bombardment of subliminal and not-so-subliminal messaging that teams should 'know their place'. If you've been a football fan for decades you're probably somewhat conditioned to it, we all are. But then you switch the remote from the EPL to the AFL, and the difference is jarring. The AFL might be run like a tin-pot competition half the time, but at least it mostly retains the essence of a genuine sporting competition. Not going to go into it at any further length than that though.

Yes you beat us a couple of times. Well done. I don't think Spurs fans will rise up against Levy. If they were going to it would have happened already. Would be great for you if it did happen.

Mate, I'm not trying to belittle United. Only pointing out that it's not 2001 any more. You dominated English football for a couple of decades, but you're not that United any more. Just as Liverpool in the 90s weren't that Liverpool any more, and Arsenal currently aren't that Arsenal any more.

I mean, 20 years ago we'd probably have had to sell if Deportivo La Coruna had come calling. Or Leeds. Times change.

I have my doubts supporters will rise up as well. I'd love it if Arsenal and United supporters rose up too, but I guess we'll see. Things are delicately poised at Spurs right now though, make no mistake.

Spurs in the super league. Fair play to Levy on that one. Was great banter. He must be a very good negotiator.

I know it's banter and all, but would you have believed 20 years ago that Man City and Atletico Madrid would be part of a 'big 12'?. It's all relative.

Your last comment really nails it though. Levy hasn't give a flying fu** about the fans for two decades...why would he start now?

I'd say he only cares about supporters to the extent that we could harm his bottom line. Which up until this point in time, hasn't happened much.

But with a new stadium to pay off, revenue falling off a cliff and support wavering between apathy and downright anger, I reckon it'd be naïve to discount fan feelings totally right now. He already attempted Step 1 in damage control before the game last night.

2021 and people still listen to what managers say about transfers. bloody hell

Ignoring also that the 'impossible' phrasing was regarding Aguero's stature at the club.
