They have to until a transfer is done. Unless there were stipulations in his contract reducing wages in the event of relegation.
There absolutely would've been stipulations in it. Even West Ham aren't that daft.

I wonder how big the wage drop would be for Bowen.

Also, I imagine Bowen & his agent would be furious about such an article being published. Now, any interested teams in London can offer a "take it or leave it" contract because it's been leaked that his missus wants him to stay in London. They don't need to pony up big wages if he must stay in London.

I can only imagine that Bowen & his agent want as many options as possible to give them some leverage in negotiations. Even for West Ham itself they would also want that so they can push up his transfer fee.

I can appreciate a need to support her with the kids though. Surely though he could live close to London and commute to say, Birmingham for Villa?
Why bother when there are six PL clubs in London he could play for? Arsenal don't need him but the rest would surely all be interested.

At that wage?

The wage and age profile would rule out Palace and Brentford for sure.
Age would rule out Chelsea too, not sure Fulham would be keen either.

Capology isn't always reliable, but since it's publicly available information I'll use it as a guide. According to it, Bowen's salary isn't unreasonable for Fulham or Palace. The next highest paid player at West Ham is Areola on 120k/week. Palace's current highest is Strand Larsen also at 120k/week, and Fulham's is Leno at 130k/week. Bowen's 150k/week would make him the highest paid player at both clubs, but not by much, and the gap to the next highest is the same or less than West Ham this past season.

Brentford is probably ruled out with their highest paid players being on 75k/week, that's fair. As for the wealthier clubs, Bowen wouldn't even crack the top 5 salaries at Chelsea and would be tied for 5th at Spuds.

If you are spending big money on a player it is pretty low risk doing so on an English player like Gordon. Even if he is shit in La Liga there will be some mug in the PL that will give you your money back, see Gallagher.

Can't remember where I saw it but there was an interview with someone basically saying this. Foreign clubs will take a punt on a PL proven player cause they know if it doesn't work out, some PL club will buy them back.
