Discussion continuing in Part 2 found here

I've said it before, but you guys would have been homophobes back in the day, earnestly citing the DSM on why homosexuality should remain illegal. I simply can't believe trans people are going to have fight all the same ignorance that we had to face. It's probably why gay people are so vocal in support, we've lived through this sort of bullshit before.

you couldn't be more incorrect.

i just don't see any link between gay people and transsexuals.

as i said before, save that i have a small degree of concern as to whether children or young adults should undergo very serious surgery or hormone therapy, i have no issue with transexuals so long as it doesn't affect every day life (sporting contests and the ability for anyone to walk into a woman's bathroom or changeroom for example).

Is phobia a negative attitude? Looked it up and its fear or aversion. I initially thought fear only. Why is phobia such a bad thing? It is not unnatural for people to fear or be averse to something that is foreign or new.
You are correct on your definition of a phobia, I guess what i was trying to say is how phobias materialise in negative attitudes and to call out someone of having a phobia you would have to be noticing their negative attitude. When people tend to call someone xenophobic, transphobic or islamaphobic they tend to be referring to that person that they are being intolerant or discriminative of them. Generally the word phobia does mean a fear or aversion. I would definitely think it is a bad thing to be transphobic.

Phobia becomes a bad thing when if affects peoples' attitudes to innocuous differences within human society. And even worse, when phobias lead to political decision-making that directly and negatively affects subsets of society.

There was also information put forward by another expert who is a psychiatrist who stated that it's the new black to be transgender according to some of his patients. This is worrying as rogue psychiatrists might support the claim when they are simply not one. Furthermore it makes me wonder and consider that the removal of transsexualism from the dsm was a pc decision rather than a fact based decision. Especially considering they see someone who looks at mental conditions when they are assessed if they are a trans or not.

Think about the women competing in Boxing,Judo,Wrestling and other combat sports
Trans MMA fighter Fallon Fox destroyed several women inside the cage
I have thought about this and that is why I have stated several times in this thread that we haven't got it right yet with transgender sports policies.

I will repeat. No one should take offence to something being called a mental illness. This is not transphobic. Also no one is even uttering that transgendered people should not be able to live their life however they should please. This is a ridiculous analogy to the atrocities that same sex attracted people have suffered through.

I agree, even more if you take the words 'subsets of' out.
Transgender needs some clear thinking about what is best for all of society. There seems to be some decent work in education, but moving forward there needs to be a more visible plan to reduce the likelihood of violence / bullying / suicide etc... Given it is early through the process it is understandable this is not done yet but there needs to be a focus on it, not just the toilet thing.

Yes they should.

For the same reasons people should take offense to being called mentally ill, because they are homosexual.

I mean, are you saying that doctors and surgeons are taking advantage of the mentally ill, by 'going along' with their transgender 'delusions'?

What kind of malpractice would it be, to 'mutilate' someone's genitals because they requested you to do it when not of sound mind?

I am entering my 18 year living as a woman and I can tell you being transgender isn't the new black, I have been called a eunuch in a dress and a young trans female has been called a bloke in this thread alone.

so is it a disease? or how would you describe it?

It appears symptomatic of where society is at, being reactive instead of actually working through the subject matter with SMEs and getting it basically right the first time with refinement as more knowledge is gathered.

If you're worried about the atrocities gays have historically faced, transgender people still face similar. Shunned by family, community, subject to violence, and now people like you who are seemingly concerned about what gays in the past faced are perpetuating it against another minority. *golf claps*

I'm sorry? When have i once perpetuated the idea that transgerendered people should be shunned by their family, community or subjected to violence. I actually quite clearly said in the paragraph you quoted that transgendered people should be able to live their life however they should please. I support people with gender dysphoria who want to undergo gender transitioning surgery or hormone therapy. I support transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice. Where have i ever called for violence of transgendered people?

I have several trans athletes from Australia and the Usa and we have started working together to find a common consensus of what we feel is a fair comprise for transgender sports policies. We as trans athletes have gone through the hormone and surgical treatments and we know best how our bodies have changed.

The IOC referred to one trans athlete to determine their 2015 policy to which not many trans athletes I know agree with.

I suggest sporting bodies don't follow the IOC,s current policy especially in sports like AFL Football where strength and endurance plays a large part and the AFL being a full contact sport.

So at the 2020 Olympiad we have Womens Boxing,Freestyle Wrestling,Judo,Karate etc

That could all be dominated by men

Think of it this way Rooey, if that happens then there will be hard science to state that there is definite advantage, and so the I.O.C will have no choice but to re-examine its position and review its participation rules.

See this is a bit of a furphy in my view, gender dysphoria is a recognised condition with numerous examples, and scientifically recognised, a mental illness as many are so quick to point out. This woman suggests she's transracial, and as it stands is the only known person with this condition, now she may well be, but as it stands there's no comparison.

The thought of a GGG type fighting women is terrifying

Its is possible that a male to female athlete with only 12 months hormone treatment and no permanent gender confirmation surgery wins a gold medal.

Trans athletes have been competing in the Olympics since 2004 with no medals won but with the IOC amending their trans policy, I predict that to change, the IOC have got this wrong.

Sometimes the only way forward is through this kind of trial-and-error. Concrete proofs can be obtained that support one argument or another.

As long as all participants are consenting adults and know the potential risks involved...
