I didn't know whether to list this as 'rumour' or 'news' but I suppose when it comes down to it the reporter is just speculating.

Travis Boak is out of contract at the end of the year and a few clubs are said to be interested, including Carlton. Should we pursue him? I think Boak is a good player, we definitely have the room in the salary cap. I know many will say no as he is a midfielder but if he were to come cheap (trade wise) he would compliment our midfielder greatly. You can never have enough quality midfielders IMO.

He has been linked to us a few times, as late as last year IIRC. The go home factor is the key, would we be interested?

Here is the article:

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-new...0505-uaml.html

"PORT Adelaide midfielder and former Victorian Travis Boak has emerged as one of the most keenly sought out-of-contract players in the competition, with several Victorian clubs and the Gold Coast having shown strong interest in the 21-year-old.

Essendon, Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond, Melbourne and St Kilda are understood to be among the clubs to have registered an interest in Boak, who late last week put contract talks with Port on hold until mid-season. Geelong would be an interested party only in the event that Gary Ablett went to the Gold Coast and freed up salary cap room."

What do we think?

This was Boak 2 months ago:

Boak Set to Stay

"I love it over here in Adelaide. I'm really enjoying it and I don't want to go anywhere. I'd be happy to stay as long as I can and with a young group coming through at the club, it's going to be fantastic to be a part of that."
<snip>

"Funnily enough I was actually only talking to Travis' manager on Tuesday and he's assured me Trav's not going anywhere," Rohde said.

Boak Set to Stay

Looks as though he will stay, but it will be interesting to follow if he keeps delaying contract talks. Although the same thing could be said about Gibbs! :(

Yeah perhaps we can send Stevo back for him, I hear he wants to make a comeback and Choco has a soft spot for dealing with us.......just kidding of course.

I doubt he will make his way to us, we would be keener on a kpp I would think. As I have said many times, you draft for mids, you trade for kp, unless they are an absolute stand out like Buddy was or Roo. Too much can go wrong in the development stage of a kp draftee, Gumby anyone?

So no I doubt it. A trade with the Hawks for one of our rucks for Roughie would be a better trade to pursue, we need a forward they desperately need a ruckman.

Would prefer the club to go out looking for a key forward, rather than another midfielder.
Id' have Boak behind Judd, Murphy, Gibbs and ahead of the rest so I'd definitely look at any chance to grab him.

Roughead is staying at Hawthorn, he signed today.

Mods, I think you closed down the Roughie thread too soon. Just because a player re signs does not mean a deal cant be done for him, in fact if the player is unsigned with Gold Coast hovering for ANY uncontracted player for all we know he signed after Carlton, Hawthorn and Roughie struck a deal for a trade at seasons end. So why close the thread?

Similar to Goddard - he was a pretty big Carlton supporter before being drafted by Port.

Hopefully this works to our advantage (but as we've seen with Judd, its all about the dollars and childhood clubs mean little).

Should pursue Boak but yeah sounds like he's just seeking a bigger contract.

As for the key forward talk..
Now that Roughead is staying who can we target?
Who's out of contract?
Who's under 25 y.o?
Who will demand a game for 22 weeks?
Who can lead our forward line & team for the next 10 years?

Good young key forwards dont stay uncontracted in this years climate.

Inside midfielder who is quicker then what we already have, might be a good addition but I am with HBF here we need a KPF with a big body and huge presence. Could we get both???

Didn't think we'd be able to when I first read this as I thought Boak would fetch a much higher price. We'd do it comfortably with the money we have spare in the salary cap.

That said, Boak won't be available to every suitor even if he does decide to leave. His price tag, expected to better $450,000 a season in the event of a shift, has already eliminated at least one interested and powerful club due to a lack of salary-cap room.

It may even be that a four-year deal worth as much as $2.2 million will be what it takes to win Boak's signature if he leaves, the sort of money some of his contemporaries from the elite tip of the 2006 national draft such as Bryce Gibbs and Joel Selwood might command on the open market.

Can somebody clarify for me please, did we come out and say something about having the opportunity to land another big name at the end of this season?

I have a memory of some kind of statement like this, or maybe we just said we'll have a freed up salary cap because of Fev leaving, giving us the chance to make a big signing?

Boak is a gun. I understand your sentiments HBF, but another quality midfielder wouldn't do us any harm. Judd, Gibbs, Murphy, Boak and Yarran in a couple of years in the midfield would be unstoppable.

Mods, I think you closed down the Roughie thread too soon.

Disagree 30yr as it will only invite more trolls to come in gloating etc. It was nothing more than a rumour thread anyway that has been put to bed and hopefully the trolls will stay away now!! Roughie wont go anywhere soon so discussion is fruitless.

As for the matter at hand Boak is not someone i would like to see the club chase. Dont get me wrong he is a promising young player with good skills but i think we have other needs in the team right now that we should be concentrating on getting right.

No chance that Gibbs and Boak might end up in a trade? Obviously I hope not, but can see why both players might want that, with Boak being a Victorian and a Carlton supporter and Gibbs being South Australian with family and girlfriend in SA. Port fans would say straight swap whereas we would want a little extra.

Hoping Gibbsy signs soon ....

Judd Murphy Gibbs Boak is not that far away from groups like Voss Black Aker Lappin and Judd Kerr Cuz Fletcher and even the greatest of them all in Williams Kouta Ratten Bradley, so if we have any shot at all at landing him it's a no-brainer.

While anything is possible as you say, he has signed a four year contract with the Hawks and it's highly unlikely he'll be playing anywhere else next year.

Star trio Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead and Sam Mitchell commit to Hawks

Roughead, who was recruited along with Franklin in the 2004 draft said he was thrilled to commit to the club.

“There is a belief within our team that we can achieve further success if we remain a committed, stable and cohesive group and I’m pleased that my contract extension will ensure I play my role within that team for many years to come.”

T Boak is my ex girlfriends cousin (I'm actually being serious). From all accounts his a good kid, and obviously a very good up and coming player. Would love him at Carlton, but we already have enough midfielders and should focus our recruiting efforts elsewhere.

Also can't see him leaving Adelaide.
