Geelong premiership forward Travis Varcoe will miss the first 5-7 weeks of the season after suffering a Bennett’s fracture to his right thumb.
Varcoe suffered the injury in the Cats practice match win over Fremantle on Saturday. He had scans on the thumb that revealed the break and he had surgery last night.

Re: Varcoe - Broken thumb

Damn, that's no good at all with talk of more midfield time this year.

So who steps up while he's out

Re: Varcoe - Broken thumb

Now were are down two small forwards from last year. (Stokes and Varcoe) I know Varcoe was earmarked for the midfield, but I'm sure he still would have spend a lot of time in the forward line.

Re: Varcoe - Broken thumb

Dammit  Was so looking forward to Varcoe in the midfield this year.

At least because it's a hand injury he'll still be able to train (albeit with no ball work) so he won't lose too much fitness.

We're copping a few injuries, although other clubs have much worse I suppose.

This would have been Stokes' way back in if he wasn't suspended.

As it is it definitely means Kelly plays either in the midfield and/or up forward round 1, and Duncan probably gets a go. I can't really see any other options, Motlop is all class, but at his current body size and shape he'll get snapped in half at senior level.

I wonder if this means it's more likely Pods will play also, though that's probably not so relevant since he's a tall.

Re: Varcoe - Broken thumb

Bad news. Looked ready to step it up.

Mitch Duncan come on down?

Re: Varcoe - Broken thumb

Annoying but not life threatening. Not a structural loss and not a soft tissue.
I say put Kelly in the F50 and if SJ is back to peak fitness, have him and Kelly rotate off each other through the MF. Then bring in Drum or Gillies to the HBF from whence Kelly came.
Also we have a fairly "tame" draw for the first 6 rounds.

Yeah it's annoying, that's one less runner, and one less midfielder we can rotate with.

You'd think that would make a debut for Duncan a near certainty. Agree with you, there's no reason why you couldn't shore up the backline with Gillies (Drum hasn't done enough yet) and shift Kelly to a midfield role. Still a strong side.

That's disappointing, but he'll be back for the business end of the season.

I'd say Duncan and Pods are looking pretty good for round one now.

Re: Varcoe - Broken thumb

Well that's no good, he was in great pre-season form and set to rip it up this year. But at least it's the start of the year and not the end of the year... Plus it'll give others a chance, Pods and Duncan should be in!

If Nathan Djerkurra isn't given the opportunity to prove himself as a forward and midfield option in these circumstances I wouldn't blame him for making plans to move on at seasons end.

Has he played at all in the pre-season thus far?

Pretty poor that we're losing our small forwards when the likes of Gamble, Hogan and Djerkurra have all been injured and had non-existant pre-seasons.

Varcoe looked to be in really good form and seemed like he was about to step his game up this year - disappointing that he's been put on hold for another couple of months.

You would have to think this means one of Duncan or Pods was a certainty for Rd. 1.

Has been injured. According to the report by the VFL coach was one of our best last week when the Woods demolished us. He certainly deserves a reasonable go as he's done little wrong in his brief chances at seniors level.

Is Hogan still injured? I remember him having a back issue a while back, but I thought he was over it.

If he is, he surely is first cab off the rank.
