Thought he was great today and seemed to thrive when given the opportunity to chase the ball around a bit more in the midfield/wing, rather than just to stay in the forward line. Is this a position he is likely to spend more time in during the coming games?

agreed
best game for the club by far i reckon
showed he can do more than play a defensive/goal sneek forward; did really well thry the midfield
great work trav

TC:eek:

great game today. loved "that chase" in the second or third quarter. great second efforts all day long.

Seconded!! The tackle of two players in succession was superb, but overall a very strong performance, and made the most of what he fought hard to get.:thumbsu:

I think criticisms in the past have come from him not earning his own ball and standing off waiting to tackle. That probably still applies to an extent, BUT...

HE JUST DOES GOOD THINGS WHEN HE HAS THE BALL.

I'll agree with that... he's starting to actually attack the ball as much as try to lay the tackle. And his skills and instinct are super.

Handballs are almost as clever as Ablett's, though kicking is skillful, lacks slight penetration. Twinkle toes though, almost does not get tackled ever and attacks ball and man extremely hard.
Once he puts on weight and starts using his speed to run with the ball...A.McCleod Mk2 perhaps?

Anyone see him try to chase down Sandilands when Sandilands was told to play on after a mark before he passed it off? Would've loved to see Trav bring Sandilands down in a tackle. :D

That snap goal he kicked can't be taught. I didn't realise he is still only 19 years old ... Selwood is the same age.

Yeah he was good. He's just about cemented his position i think, as has lonergan.

Agreed. Varcoe is showing more and more and will continue to get better. Lobers is also good. i am a huge fan of hawkins, but no way could you replace Loners after the game he had today. he has kicked 8 goals in the last 2 games now.

People always seemed to think he was fantastic with his tackling and forward pressure which he was but I would have preferred to see him getting the ball and have people chasing him.
He's starting to do it now and has looked better and better and more confident each game. Good on him.

He is class. Supreme skills with his hands and can read play. It seems to me that he is now starting to trust himself and is gaining the courage to attack the ball against bigger opposition.

That snap goal was awsome. He is fast becoming my favourite player.

He got more or a run in the midfield that usual because Ling, Kelly and Ablett were gone and made the most of it.

He has had a tendency to hang back, wait for the opposition to get the ball and then pounce, but I didn't see much of that on Saturday. I think this is an intentional strategy from Bomber more than Varcoe's natural insticts- I reckon Bomber sees an advantage in the opposition spraying their kicks out of defence because they're packin their daks knowing Varcoe's hot on their heels.

I think I mentioned a few weeks back that he looked more comfortable through the center and half forward than deep in attack (although his pressure there is good). It might be a little longer with our midfielders before he is a constant factor in the middle of the ground for us but he could be good delivering to hawkins, loners and mooney in the next few years with his ball usage (93% effective on the weekend)

Have been a big fan of his since we drafted him. Has really come on the last few weeks, which is a big plus. Looking really smooth and classy. Especially with the extra time in the midfield.

How good was his SNAP from 50. Some players can even kick that on the run.

He might be a good match up for Cooney, now that Ling is out.

I watched Dunn keep Cooney quiet on the weekend and Varcoe has even better speed to go with Cooney.

Just a thought anyway, Varcoe will be an absolute gun in 2009.

I have been thinking if this might be a role for Djerrkura might learn a bit from in his 1st real game? Give rooke the 1st 5-10mins then switch over. If it doesn't work then rooke can go again and Djerrkura can be used off the bench up forward?
