Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

In todays game I don't buy into that opinion. The club and his team mates( and all supporters should!) expect him to put his body on the line and hit the man/tackle hard. This attitude is whats driven the club to it's current dynasty and is required at AFL level with todays highly competitive, highly contested style of football. Our game plan in 2011 has changed. In the past Varcoe benefited from our run and handball game, now we play a more contested brand... he can't cope.

Varcoe's form in 2011 has been terrible. He's lucky to be getting a game, that is indisputable. Waiting week after week for him to pull out of it is not doing him or the club any favours.. he must play VFL then earn his spot.

I'm sick of seeing this Tambling/Wells 'he'll be a star one day" rubbish. Surely we can move past this, not just as a code.. but as a nation.

Couldn't agree more. I have never held any respect for players who won't put their body in when it's called for, and I really hate the excuses that are made for players of that ilk. Unfortunately right now he fits into that category.

What makes it look much, much worse is some of the toughest competitors the club has ever had are in the side setting the correct example too.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Top 10?

Cant have him ahead of

Scarlett
Taylor
Corey
Enright
Bartel
Johnno
Chappy
Otto
Kelly
Menzel
Selwood
Duncan
Ling

I'm not expecting much from him Saturday night, IMHO Christensen is hungrier and in better form
Cheers ADA23.
We certainly bat deep don't we !! On that list , when in form , he would just sneak into top 10 - my reasoning is that if he is in form , gets 22 or so touches, he can be so damaging and game breaking. At the moment it's all moot because he is so far off it's not funny. Needs to turn it around tomorrow night - understatement I know !!

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Think if he doesn't perform again he won't be running out against the Saints.
No guarantee he won't be subbing again, but if he plays, its perform or else.

Interesting to see he has been named starting in the mids. I wonder if Scotty has said put up or get out.
I know its probably not how it will start but interesting to name selwood on the bench and varcoe as our first onballer!!

I think Scottie may have read the riot act, he'll possibly play him in the thick of it to see if he can handle the heat.
As well as find possessions as a midfielder should.
Guess Scotts gotta find these things out now, rather than later and loose a premiership.

Too true! We cant have passengers this year if we want a full tilt at it!!

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Varcoe can be a damaging player on his day. However there are quite a few who can fit into that category at GFC.

Its when he is not having a good day - what a player does then - that counts.

Very rarely does Joel Corey, or Bartel. or Chappy, etc - have a bad day. Their bad days are still serviceable. That is what Travis needs to bring to his game - better performances when he is down.

You do that by chasing, tackling, picking up a man, patroling the mark well, sheparding, etc. team things. Good players are always attempting to contribute.

I prefer hard at it players - because even on a down day they give you something. Varcoe just needs to be more consistent.

Another player too many called early as a gun player IMO. You need to do a lot more than Travis to be a labeled a gun footballer.

He has time on his side - so he could still be the player many expect he will be. Just not yet.

For your rants to have even a sceric of credibility you would hope so eh meto??. If we were to believe your recent postings, Varcoe wouldn't be even close to selection....

Seems Scott and the MC haven't been reading your posts....either that or they are seeing Varcoe's performances as somewhat different than your recent assessments.

Sort of embarrassing really.

I doubt they could not have noticed his performances! IMO, he's a very lucky boy, anyhow he's got another chance tonight, to put it right!

If not, after that he'd have to be dropped, surely, but your lot don't seem to care about the team or those derserving of promotion.
I know you clowns will still be pushing him up, forgoodnasake think rationally, if he does the glide tonight, then that's it.

Passenger....

Travis Varcoe.

Just not good enough the last few weeks. Time to put him in the twos for a mental check up and promote Christensen again.

Re: Passenger....

I was really excited when he broke an important tackle to dish off to Stokes for a standout goal in the second quarter.

We've seen one or two (or three) impressive things every week from Trav, but I'm sick of flashy. I want solid.

I believe in you Travis. And I believe you need to accumulate some possessions in the VFL.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

just glad we got Chris Scott coaching and not most of you blokes:p because so far we'd have Varcoe and Mackie relegated to the reserves and you can effectively take away 6 points from tonight's final score. So we lose tonight's game and you can also include the Carlton game as a loss as Varcoe had 3 goals in that one too. So we are now 9-2 and sitting in 2nd spot on the ladder:eek:

I get what you're saying bobby, but I thought Varcoe was disappointing tonight. started well enough...bursting through the first ruck with aggression, a few tackles that showed some aggression, and the short kick to Stokes for a goal was all class...but he died out of it after that.

Wanted more from him in a game like this. I suspect he will have a week off against the Saints.

Yeah, you're right. Geelong just simply couldn't have won without his six amazing possessions.

Given that one was a goal, and he was involved in a goal assist for Stokes, yes you are dead right, we could not have won without his 6 possessions as it turns out, but he was again very quiet , or nonexistent in the 3rd/4. A week off might be therapeutic.

He was subbed off VD.......

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

gotta admit he hasn't got going just yet but it's only a good sign as his upside come finals could be invaluable. He's yet another bloke that can give this team an extra boost and I suspect each player has been on a special fitness program. Chapman, Varcoe and Wojak would likely be doing more kilometres at this stage behind doors than the rest of the team due to their pre-season injury delays etc. It's always gonna be a catch up game for them but they should really be firing at the right time of the year at least the fitness staff would have calculated that factor into it. Not surprising they look flat at this stage of the season.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Yea...Chappy hasn't been himself the last couple of weeks either. The focus must be on the finals from here on in......we need our best players firing.
