Mate I'm no saint so perhaps I should sit back and let others judge but I just cannot cop racism. Saying I have a black uncle who I talk to doesn't make you non racist. At least he is talking to him I guess.

I lived in the territory for a long time and visited some amazing communities in the Top End and many places remote around Tennant/Alice. Played footy in Alice and got invited by a full blood teammate up to his land near Ti Tree a couple of times. Went hunting (which isn't something I would ever normally do but dinner options were limited unless you went and killed something) and became close with a lot of the community up there. We spoke and black fella white fella was what we called each other. (When i moved down south I copped a lot of grief (from white people) for saying black fella when referring to aborigines mates or non mates so I just stopped doing it.) When I think of racism I think of those people, how they live, the limited choices they have. The love, generosity and kindness they show strangers, how overwhelmingly welcoming they are to ANYONE. Then I think of campaigners behind keyboards living a life or privilege going on racist rants and my ****ing blood boils.

Anyway rant over.

It was a difference pointed out to me by full blood people and non full blood people I was with in and around Alice.

I had a friend who was in the Greens, then he started to listen to Sam Harris and talk about how islam is the motherlode of bad ideas, that western liberal democracy is incompatible with islam, and that the link between race and IQ is real.

He now donates to accused sex offenders (some guy who had like 20 women complain) because they are being “persecuted”, worships Elon Musk and has become a single issue one nation voter because “we need to reduce immigration”.

So while my friend was probably a racist piece of shit already and I just hadn’t noticed, I still absolutely despise Sam Harris.

Ah yes, one aspect of one speaker obviously invalidates the entire enterprise. Harris actually talked about meditation and the Buddhist contemplative tradition, and ran a guided meditation session of the entire Melbourne Convention Centre plenary which was ****ing awesome.

I think he goes too hard at Islam and I no longer share his view that moderate religious people share culpability for the actions of extremists, but nor do I write him off because of it. He’s a necessary voice in this day and age.

I think he goes too hard at Islam and I no longer share his view that moderate religious people share culpability for the actions of extremists, but nor do I write him off because of it. He’s a necessary voice in this day and age.

Like whoever you like, it was just a shock to see someone that has recently criticised the term virtue signaling, the Joe Rogan experience and anti-SJW rhetoric actually be a Sam Harris fan. He fits into all those categories.

I guess I, like Sam Harris, am more complicated than you figured.

I used to listen to JRE regularly. The two things that turned me off were the regular anti-trans rhetoric, and the fact that Brian Redban stopped producing the show regularly and he was by far the best part of it.

On Harris' own podcast, during the 2016 election he reacted with some dismay about the fact that it turned out that a good chunk of his listeners/readers were Trump-supporting mouth breathers, and he accepted the blame that some of his rhetoric had led to that, and I feel like he's toned it down and chosen his words more carefully since.

I’m just gonna assume you haven’t seen his fine work defending charles “cross burning” Murray, and his associated race science. Or his constant thought experiments about the middle east, nuking muslims, Palestinians being more violent than Israel, torture being good (even though it literally doesn’t work), and a whole host of absolutely garbage takes on any political topic - most recently that a billionaire needs to run against Trump.

I mean the guy is just a sexist, racist, transphobic piece of shit who hides behind “thought experiments” and being “taken out of context” while sharing a platform with smooth brained geniuses Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson and Dave Rubin. As well as providing a platform to scum like Charles Murray.

But you literally are taking thought experiments out of context... thought experiments are a philosopher’s stock in trade. Also I hope it hardly needs reiterating that there are any number of things I disagree with him on.

You’re welcome to regard him as a bad philosopher of course but it’s frankly surreal to suggest he’s not one at all.

I’m not sure if you took philosophy at uni but if you did you’d know that tutorials on moral philosophy regularly turn into discussions on the relative morality of, say, hacking off your own mother’s arm vs stomping a puppy to death. But no one in the class wants to actually do any of those things any more than Sam Harris wants to nuke the Middle East. Because they actually understand what a thought experiment is.

Anyway I’ll leave you alone now, but I hope you think about what you’ve done.
