I don't quite get all this waffle about him being overweight? Looks fine to me, just has a face where he carries puppy fat similar to Schoenberg.

This kid is a proper footballer, just what we need at the club and he is clearly exteemely happy to be here.

He's very obviously not fat. He'd be in better shape than 99% of people.

However at AFL level he will need to get a lot fitter than he is. He's a project player at this stage, but one with some genuine talent and a pretty bloody good pedigree.

He is one of those body types where he isnt a natural athlete and puts on weight and muscle easily, like fogarty. Theres too options. Either chuck him in the weights room to bulk up and turn him into a Hawkins style forward like we wanted Fogarty to be, but Fog looks better at CHF. Or we put him on a running program that allows him to play a linking tall HFF role. From what I have heard, havent seen him play, looks more like a natural deep forward. So maybe the Hawkins style bulk up could be a good option. But I would be surprised if he works is way into AFL in 2025.

And Ned McHenry is a better footballer than 99% of people.

Context is the key here. He is very obviously overweight and therefore fat by AFL standards. He would be in the bottom 1% compared to all of his peers at AFL level when it comes to fitness.

Agree. Hopefully he becomes the first true father son to play a game for the same club his dad did.

Being a supreme 'looking' athlete is not an absolute requirement to play AFL to a high standard, look at Willie Rioli - he carries lots of weight around the midriff. If Welsh can get his fitness to a reasonable standard he has more than enough ability to knock it out of the park at AFL level.

No its not.

The McGoverns come to mind as bigger, less athletic looking players that are extremely good at AFL level. Stuart Dew nearly won a norm smith carrying a spare tyre around his middle.

But the AFL is littered with players who have had careers cut short, or not achieved anywhere near their potential because of their lack of fitness / desire. Damien Cupido, Nick Davis, Nick Stephens, Shane McAdam, Harry Schoenberg just off the top of my head.

Absolutely. Talent is there. But there is no debating his fitness right now.

Am I concerned long term? Not really - a lot can change for an 18 year old in a single preseason if he applies himself.

At pick 58 - its a low risk - high reward type of draft pick.

I dont think we need to worry. No one should be expecting him to really start playing AFL regularly until 2027. He needs muscle and needs to build a tank. He just needs time to grow into his body. Im not sure why some of the rhetoric. People panicking and judging Welsh for no reason.

I wouldn't say panicking. Our investment in Welsh is absolutely minimal. Pick 58 is nothing. We have only taken two players later than him in national draft in the past 10 years (Sholl / Signorello).

But there is absolutely validity around the discussion of why he slipped so far. One year ago he was touted as a top 10 pick.
Then he slips to pick 58 and there is a bunch of press around his horrible 2km time trial. Combine this with him carrying an obvious belly and there is enough there to warrant discussion.

He is a kid. just needs to learn to be professional. He will be mentored. No need even for a discussion. Otherwise is it any different from Whitlock sliding to pick 33. Skinny as a rake. id be way more worried about his ability to put on weight than welsh ability to lose it and run.

As for why he dropped. Thats easy. learning. changes to his natural game.

The fact the club only ultimately committed to picking him up in the last couple of weeks - as per Reidy after the trade period - shows there’s been some issue or disconnect IMO. More knowledgeable posters like Jeff hinted perhaps at other unseen things and I won’t guess what these are.

Has lots going for him and now really needs to knuckle down and get super fit. In terms of positions appears a one trick pony and not dissimilar to Fog as a leading bulky forward with elite kick. With TT the first chosen in the forward line going forward and forward lines getting smaller overall (often 2, not 3 talls. Also see the talls who slipped out of first round predictions this draft) means it will be interesting to see if we can ultimately fit all 3 talls into the same forward line down the track - plus our plethora of quality smalls like Rachele, Keays, ANB, hopefully Pedlar, resting Rankine etc

His dad was a gun. Held our forward line together for years.

Agreed, absolute gun and so many similar traits to Tyler inc hard at it, excellent on the lead, smart footballer and elite kick inc both feet (not sure if Tyler has a left) and overall goal kicking ability.

Scott has aged well. Still looks very fit both Scotty and his partner and a nice loving family unit overall.

Tyler will be given every chance to succeed and he is exciting as a FS prospect picked up so cheaply.

Haven’t the Rowe’s got that mantle?

They committed to him a year out. The only reason why he is talking trade week is if something fell out of the sky and a no brainer option fell into their lap that ate up the list spot. But Welsh was always going to be the father son option.

Nah dont read anything into it. Its just the timing of list lodgements. No disconnect. The club was always taking Welsh.

Even if he did whatever he needed to do over the last 12 months to remain a first round rated option ... still would mean a long road ahead to be a power forward at AFL level.

These draftees are about potential - none of them have franked a thing.

Tyler has potential, has the tools to be an AFL player in a position that MANY fail at.

I'm on-board early, happy to have a smooth start and just keep seeing signs that Welsh is on the right track.

All he needed was Pavlich in the forward line instead of Kenny McGregor and a bunch of other misfits and we would have won a flag. Welsh was unfortunately the key target, carrying a heavy load, when he would have starred as the second forward.

For those of you who remember this one from back in the day:

We love you Welshy, we do!
We love you Welshy, we do!
We love you Welshy, we do,
Ohhhh Welshy we love you!

2027?

Reckon there will be a Walker vacancy before then.

Should be aiming to play a fair bit from 2026.

Geezuz.. the kid isnt a rory laird, ned mchenry or ben keays..

3 blokes that try their hardest but just arent AFL standard..

Fit as but cant play footy.. two of them can barely kick a footy.

This is a kid who has a shitload of raw talent. Speed to burn and can find the goals.

If he was fat this year (and I personally didnt think he was too big- maybe a bit of puppy fat) then look out when he loses it and Darren Burgess gets him to full fitness..
Cause his “fatness” this year certainly didnt hinder his speed and agility.

I get “jake Stringer” vibes.. without the jake stringer ********edness obviously.

He can be a medium forward who can pinch hit as a bull through the midfield like Stringer did at his peak..

Have no doubt the club has kept him under wraps all year to tank his value and he also had a couple of niggles last preseason..

Reckon he will surprise many in the years to come. Massive potential to become a fuxkn absolute weapon.

Got him for virtually nothing.. whats to lose.
