What I will say is it's pretty disappointing that Welsh and Draper somehow managed to have worse seasons this year than last year in the same league.

What are we doing to develop them?

Yep.

I get that Draper came on as a sub later in the practice match against Brisbane but he looked sensational, hunting the ball, using his pace. Fast forward a few months later for the game against Norf and he looked as lost on a footy field as I have seen since Curtly Hampton played his last game.

We need to head hunt a serious development coach and I still think we can't keep going without a midfield coach.

What's crazy is that in two years, all three of our main AFL listed midfielders from this season in the SANFL will not be on a list

Murphy, Jones, Schoenberg. All three are DONE

So why the **** are we giving these guys (plus top ups) prime midfield time?

Yeah I get if Berry or Crouch drops to the twos for a bit, that those guys should be playing midfield. But Murphy? He's out of contract and should not in a million years get another one. Schoenberg too. Murphy won't even play midfield at AFL level, ever.

Like what the **** are we doing? Put Jones into the back pocket, Murphy into a forward pocket, Schoenberg at half forward and top ups literally anywhere else (in particular, places we have injuries).

Now there's room for Draper, Dowling, Edwards in the middle. Rotate Taylor and Pedlar into there if they're playing twos. Done. Have ONE senior player in the center if they're struggling.

I don't follow the reserves sides of other premiership contenders closely, but is there another top 8 team that regularly has a reserves midfield featuring multiple players that will not play midfield at AFL level plus top ups?

And as much as people have a go at Marty Wright and Godden ( and by all means they should, that sort of stuff gets ticked off by VB

I would say it's common. Most of the AFL teams are simply aligned with another club and probably don't get a say on game day tactics. those clubs want to win their own premiership.

No sense made whatsoever.
A functional club would work to the instructions of the afl coach and line coaches.
The sanfl club shouldn’t be doing their own thing.
One would hope we are a functional club.

But how do you know where the approach has come from? VB? Nicks? Someone else?

I agree. I mentioned this earlier in the year that he just looks like a kid who really benefited from being bigger then most 16 year olds.

But I dont see the flashes of athleticism, game breaking talent, or at this point the desire to crack the next level. TBH if he wasn't playing as a drafted Crows player im not 100% sure he's a walk-on at every SANFL club.

Maybe hes still got a sophomore surge in him, and for his sake I hope he does. But as an AFL prospect, he hasn't stood out for a while now

Watched him pretty closely on Sunday, where he had a couple of chances to grab some ground balls (all be it under pressure) and either ran over the ball completely, or fumbled at a crucial time.

Also, stood there with his arm in the air waiting for the ball to be kicked to him.

Made no attempt to lead or create space, and body language very poor.

Looks like a player who would go back and play country footy and kick bags of goals and sit in the bar saying 'what could have been'

Just bookmarked it. Showed up in my bookmarks next to your "bookmark this" post about Hawthorn not making the 8 this year.

Kicking him or not playing him and setting these arbitrary fitness standards is one way, one that has cost us a few talents over the years... another might be if we think he can play, playing him in a less aerobic position at afl level to start with like in defence and see if the penny drops.

If "arbitrary fitness standards" cost someone a career, they weren't an answer in the first place.

We seem to start our young players on the structure and team responsibility stuff very early

Do other clubs let them be kids for a bit longer? Let them play on instinct, hunt the footy, live with their flaws. Put them in roles that let them freelance a bit. Let them show their strengths.

Then a bit later start adding the discipline, team plans, structure elements, work on their weaknesses.

Maybe just my perception.

Some kids I imagine can cope with the complexities of learning game plans earlier than others, withoutit negatively impacting their play. For some it seems to overload them.

I still think we made a mistake with him after he injured his foot (leg?)
We should have organised a fitness plan. Sent him to America, had him spend a few weeks working his butt off.
He should be just returning now, to watch the AFL finals and see what it takes. Experience the buzz etc..

He than has a break, and heads back into a big fitness program before preseason starts. By the time we return he's absolutely ripped and frothing to play.

Instead he is brought straight back in, is clearly unfit and contributes nothing.

Thilthorpe actually benefitted from his time out injured. The time was used to build bulk in his body and it helped fast track him. We could have done the same with Tyler.
