Damnit Goodwin and Edwards have been the two players you could have relied on giving their best each round. So will they bring in Mattner (if he is fit), I know it wont replace Edwards position but surely we need all our best players.

Other than if Mattner is injured I can’t figure out why he was left out in the first place.

From what the club have said, he isnt injured. Just left out of the side due to form...

I just checked the official AFC site:

Mattner unlucky

Martin Mattner is 'unlucky' not to have been squeezed back into Adelaide's team to play Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night, according to Crows coach Neil Craig.

"Kris Massie came in last week and we thought he did a pretty good job," Craig said.

"Marty's certainly played some good footy for us but, in the end, it gets down to performance in certain areas, and I'm sure he'll push for selection again.

"Marty's unlucky. His performance against West Coast (in round two) was down a little bit and he got injured (calf), and Massie came back in. I've got to be fair to players. In the end, it's my decision what to do there. I'm sure Marty Mattner will get back into our side at some stage."

The Crows took 24 players to Perth, with Mattner and Hayden Skipworth the emergencies and Tyson Edwards' general soreness to be monitored.

"We've still got just a couple of little things to tidy up over there," Craig said. "It's been a tough month of footy for us, with shortened time periods between games, travel … we just need to finalise a couple of things and, rather than have to fly people over, we just thought it was better to take an extra player.

"Mark Ricciuto (general soreness) will be okay. We've got to check Tyson. He's still a bit sore, just in general terms, and also, you just never know. We're being over-conservative maybe but we'd prefer to go that way because of the distance."

Adelaide has played 18 matches at Subiaco - for only five wins. It has a 2-5 record there against Fremantle.

Back at some stage :thumbsd:

If fit, Mattner must be in our side. He is one of the best tacklers in the competition. He adds toughness and good rebound from defence. There is no way he should be left out of our side, he was one of our better players against Collingwood, a little quiet against the Eagles but there is no way he should be excluded.

You neglected to mention he runs the lines. He certainly backs himself to break the tackle, run and kick long.

As for Edwards injury ...hes probably got a sore back from carrying < insert name> for the past 3 games:rolleyes:

I was told today by a little birdie that Mattner is definitely fit. They werent able to comment on whether he would play.
It was well documented on the news services that Mattner is fit. He wasn't selected based on form (which personally I think is pretty harsh).

We don't get AFL news up here, and I was told this at about 3 this arvo but was unable to get on to post it. Sorry for being superfluous!

Sorry, wasn't having a crack! Just confirming what you'd heard .... :thumbsu:

read between the lines...

Mattner is getting over a calf...these are always dicey injuries that can easily re-occur.

He's fit to play IF required but I'm suggesteing the AFC would "prefer" to give him an extra week to get over the calf "if possible".

Taking him as an emergency covers the above..the "official line" just puts pressure on all players to perform knowing if you don't there are good players waiting for your spot.
